Definition

A plumber is a tradesperson who installs and repairs the pipes, fixtures, drains and gas lines in a home. HomeAdvisor's 2026 average plumbing job costs $341, at $45 to $200 an hour.

HomeAdvisor's June 2026 guide puts the typical rate at $70 to $120 an hour before trip fees and materials, with residential plumbers averaging $80 an hour and commercial plumbers $100. HomeGuide's range is $45 to $150, with a $75 average. Most companies charge a service call fee of $100 to $250 that covers the first hour (HomeAdvisor), and some add a separate trip fee. HomeAdvisor says simple calls such as a clogged drain, a running toilet or a dripping faucet often get a flat rate of $100 to $400.

Plumber rates by license level

LevelHourly rangeAverage
Apprentice$45 to $90$70
Journeyperson$60 to $110$90
Master plumber$80 to $200$120

HomeAdvisor, June 2026. HomeAdvisor notes some states do not require or recognize these levels.

Do this now: before the plumber arrives

  1. Smell gas? Leave first, then call 911 or the gas utility from outside. The Kansas Corporation Commission says not to use light switches, phones or garage door openers on the way out, and not to look for the leak.
  2. Stay out of standing water near outlets, cords or appliances. The Red Cross warns not to touch electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water.
  3. Shut off the main water valve. Phoenix Water Services says most houses have it at the front near a hose bib, and Denver Water says basement homes usually have it on the street-facing wall.
  4. Leave faucets open after the main is off; Phoenix says to keep them open until repairs are done.
  5. Photograph the damage before you clean up, then call your insurer. FEMA says to take photos before cleanup begins. Do not sign your claim over to a contractor.
  6. Call the plumber line and ask for the service call fee; HomeAdvisor puts it at $100 to $250, usually covering the first hour.

How much does plumbing repair cost: common job prices

Emergency plumber vs regular rates

An emergency or after-hours visit costs 1.5 to 3 times the normal rate in HomeAdvisor's 2026 figures, with surcharges of $100 to $300 or more. HomeGuide says weekday nights run time and a half or more, weekends and holidays double or triple time, and late-night calls $195 to $260 an hour. If the water is off and nothing is backing up, waiting for business hours usually costs less. If water is spreading or sewage is coming up, read emergency plumber for what to do before anyone arrives.

How to find your main water shutoff valve

For most houses the main shutoff is at the front of the home near a hose bib, according to the City of Phoenix; older homes may have it at the back, and homes with basements may have it inside on the wall facing the street. Phoenix's advice:

  • Find it before you need it. "Know where your water shut-off valve is and test it regularly."
  • Do not use the meter. Phoenix says not to shut water off at the meter. The meter also marks the line between the city's side and yours: leaks on the customer's side are the owner's to fix.
  • For a broken pipe: turn off the main, call a plumber, and leave faucets open until repairs are done.
  • Cannot find it? Call your water utility. Phoenix customers can call Customer Services at 602-262-6251.

A water bill that jumps with no change in use can mean a hidden leak; leak detection covers how plumbers find it, and slab leak repair covers leaks under a concrete floor.

Plumbing license: who licenses plumbers in your state

Most states and localities require plumbers to be licensed, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and they often require 2 to 5 years of experience and a trade exam before a plumber can work independently. BLS puts the median plumber wage at $30.67 an hour (May 2025). In our six states, the license comes from these agencies:

StateWho licenses plumbingWhat to ask for
TexasTexas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE)Responsible Master, Master, Journeyman or Tradesman Plumber-Limited; check the TSBPE Public License Search
FloridaDBPR Construction Industry Licensing BoardCertified plumbing contractor (CF, works statewide) or registered (RF, only where registered)
ArizonaRegistrar of Contractors (ROC)R-37 residential, C-37 commercial or CR-37 dual; needed when labor and materials exceed $1,000 or a permit is required
CaliforniaContractors State License Board (CSLB)C-36 Plumbing Contractor
NevadaNevada State Contractors BoardC-1 Plumbing and heating, or a subclass such as C-1d Plumbing
ColoradoDivision of Professions and Occupations (Plumbing)Residential, Journeyworker or Master Plumber license

From each state agency's site, checked October 2026. Cities and counties may add permits or registration.

Ask for the license number and check it with the agency yourself. HomeGuide also suggests calling your local building department to verify a plumber's license, and asking for a written warranty that covers parts and labor. Electrical work that comes with a plumbing job, such as a new circuit for a tankless heater, may fall under the electrician license rules instead.
