Definition

Garage door repair is fixing the parts that lift, guide and drive an overhead door: springs, cables, rollers, tracks, panels and the opener. HomeGuide's 2026 guide puts most repairs at $150 to $350.

HomeGuide puts most garage door repairs at $150 to $350, and simple fixes such as a sensor can start under $100, though minimum service fees may apply. HomeAdvisor's 2026 national average is $265, with a range of $80 to $700. Fixr's average is $250. Labor runs $75 to $150 an hour in HomeAdvisor's figures, and a quick service call for a simple fix costs $50 to $75. HomeAdvisor calls broken springs one of the most common garage door problems; the garage door spring repair guide prices them by type.

A garage door with its torsion spring, drums, cables and openeropener1Torsion spring (under heavy tension, never touch)2Cables and drums lift the doorWith a broken spring the door's full weight is on the cables and opener; leave it closed (Chamberlain)
The torsion spring above the door does the lifting; the cables and the opener only guide it. A broken spring or cable is not a do-it-yourself job.

Do this now: garage door stuck, crooked or broken

  1. Leave the door where it is, ideally closed, and keep people and pets out from under it. Chamberlain warns that with weak or broken springs a door may fall rapidly and without warning.
  2. Look at the springs and cables from the floor without touching them. HomeGuide lists a gap in the coil and slack or detached cables among the signs of a broken spring.
  3. Do not loosen brackets or handle cables. DASMA says cables should be replaced only by a trained technician and brackets adjusted only by a trained door systems technician.
  4. If the door will not close and the opener lights flash, check the safety sensors first (the section below walks through it).
  5. Call the garage door line and ask for the service call fee; HomeAdvisor and Fixr put it at $50 to $75.

Emergency garage door repair: what it costs after hours

Emergency garage door repair adds $100 to $300 to the bill for same-day service in Fixr's figures. HomeGuide says emergency, evening, weekend and holiday work carries premium charges, and HomeAdvisor tells homeowners to budget for emergency fees when a door fails outside business hours. Some companies take emergency calls; hours vary, so ask the fee before anyone is sent.

If the door is closed and nobody needs the car tonight, a next-day visit avoids the same-day surcharge. Either way, do not try to lift a door with a broken spring by hand.

Garage door won't open: what you can safely check

A garage door that will not open or close can be a sensor, power or lock-mode problem you can check from the floor in a few minutes. Work through these in order and stop at the first sign of a spring or cable problem:

  1. Look at the springs and cables from the floor. HomeGuide lists the signs of a broken spring: a gunshot-like bang, a gap in the coil, a door that tilts or drops fast, and slack or detached cables. If you see any of these, stop here and call.
  2. Count the light flashes. On Chamberlain openers, lights that flash 10 times mean a safety sensor problem; 2 flashes mean the LOCK button is on and the remotes are locked out. Press LOCK to turn it off.
  3. Check the photo eyes. The sensors sit on each side of the door, no higher than 6 inches above the floor. Clear anything between them. Chamberlain says to loosen the wing nut and point the lenses at each other until the LED glows steadily, and that sunlight on the receiving sensor can act like a blocked beam.
  4. Check power. Make sure the opener is plugged in and its breaker is on. If a breaker trips again, the breaker keeps tripping guide covers what an electrician checks.
  5. Use the manual release only with the door closed. Chamberlain says to pull the emergency release only when the door is fully closed if possible, and never to use it to raise or lower the door. If the door is very heavy, will not stay open or slams shut, stop and call.

The garage door opener repair guide goes through sensor wiring codes, remotes and when a motor is worth fixing.

What you must not do: springs and cables under tension

Garage door springs hold hundreds of pounds of tension, and HomeAdvisor's advice is to leave that job to a pro. HomeGuide calls spring replacement extremely dangerous and says DIY attempts can result in serious injury or death. The door industry's trade group, DASMA, says cables should be replaced only by a trained technician because of the spring tension, and that brackets should be adjusted or loosened only by a trained door systems technician.

  • Do not loosen or adjust the brackets or cables.
  • Do not pull the emergency release on an open door with a broken spring.
  • Never put your fingers between door sections (DASMA).
  • Stop running the opener on a door that is crooked, jerking or grinding. HomeAdvisor says to schedule service as soon as you hear grinding or notice uneven movement.

Fixr agrees: cleaning and painting are reasonable homeowner jobs, while springs, chains and other high-tension parts should be left to professionals.

Garage door off track and cable repair

Putting a door back on its track costs $200 to $350 in HomeGuide's 2026 guide and $100 to $300 in Fixr's. HomeAdvisor says track damage pushes a repair closer to $400. Fixr puts cable replacement at $100 to $200, HomeGuide puts cable repair or replacement at $150 to $350, and HomeGuide lists spring and cable replacement together at $200 to $500. Track replacement runs $125 to $300 (HomeGuide). Rollers cost $100 to $150 to replace in Fixr's figures.

Monthly safety test: auto-reverse and photo eyes

The CPSC counts about 73 children, ages 2 to 14, trapped and killed under automatic garage doors since March 1982. Openers made after January 1, 1991 have reversing systems, and from 1993 the rule added a second safeguard such as an electric eye or door edge sensor.

  1. Every 30 days, lay a 2x4 flat on the floor under the door and close it. The CPSC says that if the door does not reverse when it hits the board, disconnect the opener until it is adjusted, repaired or replaced.
  2. Check the photo eyes. The CPSC says an electric eye belongs 4 to 6 inches above the floor.
  3. Mount the wall button high. The CPSC says to put the push button as high as practical and keep remotes away from children.
  4. Check the balance. The CPSC says a balanced door stays put when stopped partway open. One that drifts, binds or sticks should be serviced by a professional.

Repair or replace the garage door

Repair the parts until the door itself is the problem. A single damaged panel runs $300 to $900 or more in HomeGuide's 2026 guide, while a whole new single door is $700 to $2,700 installed and a double $1,000 to $3,500. The garage door installation guide prices doors by size and material.

Garage door repair scams: warning signs

One garage door scam pattern is a company posing as a local business. Massachusetts consumer regulators warned in a garage door scam alert that a fake company impersonated a real local garage door business. Their warning signs:

  • A company name that closely resembles a known local business.
  • No address you can verify.
  • Technicians in unmarked vans, without uniforms or anything tying them to the company.
  • An estimate far above normal prices. Compare it with the table above.
  • Requests for money up front, especially cash.
  • Lifetime guarantees that hide inflated service fees.

Massachusetts' advice: get two to three estimates, get everything in writing, and never pay for the job in advance. One more trap: the FTC's Cooling-Off Rule, which gives three business days to cancel some in-home sales, does not cover emergency repairs or repairs you asked the company to come out for. Read the price before you sign, not after. For storm-related work, see storm damage contractor laws by state.

Garage door repair near me: what to ask before you book

  • What is the service call fee? HomeAdvisor and Fixr both put it at $50 to $75. Ask whether it is waived if you approve the repair.
  • What is the price per part? Get the spring, cable and roller prices in writing before work starts.
  • Will you replace both springs? DASMA says that if a door has two springs, replace both even if only one broke.
  • Will you test the auto-reverse when you finish? HomeGuide recommends asking.
  • What is your license number, and do you carry insurance? Ask for both, and check them yourself. Rules vary by state and city, so ask which license applies where you live.
