Do this now: a leak or backup in an Austin home
- Smell gas? Leave the house and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Water near outlets? Shut off power at the breaker only if you can reach it from a dry spot.
- Close the main water shutoff. For one fixture, close the valve under the sink or behind the toilet.
- Sewage coming up a drain? Stop running water. Austin Water investigates overflows and blockages on private laterals at 512-972-0069.
- Photograph the damage before cleanup. FEMA says to report damage to your insurer as soon as possible.
- Save the repair receipt. Austin Water's leak adjustment needs it within 90 days of the repair.
A plumber in Austin repairs water, drain, sewer and gas piping under a Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE) license. Angi's February 2026 Austin guide puts the average job at $303.
Is it an emergency? Austin freeze nights and burst pipes
Austin is not a cold city, but it freezes often enough to burst pipes: Camp Mabry averages about 12 days a year at or below 32 F and the airport at Bergstrom about 33, the National Weather Service says. Average first and last freezes fall on Dec 1 and Feb 15, and the record low is -2 F, set Jan 31, 1949. Call now for a burst pipe, water you cannot shut off, sewage backing up, or a gas smell. A slow drip or a single slow drain can wait for a daytime visit at the regular rate. See burst pipe repair and frozen pipes.
Austin plumbing permits: what is exempt
Austin exempts simple emergency plumbing fixes "such as stopping leaks or clearing clogs" from a permit, the city's emergency permits page says. Other plumbing goes through a stand-alone permit, and "No gas work is exempt from a permit." Once the permit is posted, the contractor can start. For life-safety work in an occupied building, the city lists 512-974-1500 for priority. Angi says permits run $50 to $500 and are passed through on the invoice, so ask whether the quote includes one.
Your sewer lateral is yours: the P-Lat rule
In Austin, the private lateral is "the portion of the wastewater service line located on your property," and the owner is responsible for it under City Code Chapter 15-11. Austin Water investigates a private lateral when there is an overflow or blockage on private property (512-972-0069). Repairs need a Development Services permit, and the code sets a minimum slope of 2 percent. Owners of single-family homes or duplexes at or below 100% of median family income can get the lateral repaired or replaced free through the Private Lateral Grant Program (512-974-3100). See sewer line repair and drain cleaning for national prices.
Austin Water leak adjustment: 90 days
Austin Water will adjust a bill for a fixed leak under City Code 15-9-141 if you apply within 90 days of the repair. Send the repair receipt, account number, address, the dates of the high charges and a description of the repair to [email protected] or fax 512-505-4035. Taking an adjustment waives the administrative hearing for the same period. Customer service: 512-494-9400.

How to check an Austin plumber's license
Texas licenses plumbers statewide through TSBPE. Search its public license lookup by name or license number to see whether the license is current and whether there is any discipline. Ask for proof of insurance too; that is not on the license page. Complaints go to the Texas Attorney General's consumer complaint form.
Emergency plumber in Austin: 24 hour plumber rates
An emergency plumber in Austin costs 1.5 to 3 times the standard rate, Angi's February 2026 Austin guide says, on top of Austin's $45 to $200 hourly range and a $100 to $250 trip fee. Angi's national emergency guide puts the after-hours average at $170 an hour with most at $100 to $500, plus a $150 to $300 emergency fee. Some Austin companies take calls around the clock and some do not; hours vary, so ask the after-hours fee before anyone is sent.
Two Austin rules keep the bill down. Stopping a leak or clearing a clog needs no permit, so a night visit can be a short one, and the permanent fix can be priced in daylight. And if the leak raised your water bill, keep the receipt for the 90-day leak adjustment. If the water is off, nothing is backing up and a toilet works, a morning visit usually costs less. The national emergency plumber guide lists what counts as a plumbing emergency.
