Do this now: plumbing emergency in Las Vegas

  1. Smell gas? Leave first, then call 911 or the gas utility from outside. The Kansas Corporation Commission says not to use light switches, phones or garage door openers on the way out, and not to look for the leak.
  2. Stay out of standing water near outlets, cords or appliances. The Red Cross warns not to touch electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water.
  3. Shut off the main water valve. LVVWD says it is usually in the front yard near the sewer riser cap, in the garage, or in the home's manifold system.
  4. Not sure there is a leak? With all water off, LVVWD says to watch the red or white flow-indicator triangle on the meter; if it turns, water is leaking.
  5. Photograph the damage before you clean up, then call your insurer. FEMA says to take photos before cleanup begins. Do not sign your claim over to a contractor.
  6. Call the plumber line and ask for the service call fee before anyone is sent.

LVVWD leak help: a bill adjustment and up to $2,000 back

The Las Vegas Valley Water District pays back up to 50% of a leak repair, capped at $2,000 per event, under its Leak Repair Reimbursement Program. The repair must cost at least $200, the program is for single-family owners with paid invoices, and since July 1, 2025 it can be used once per rolling 365 days.

Its separate Leak Adjustment Program reverses the leak part of excess use charges if use during the leak was at least 50% above your baseline, the repair was made within 60 days of the billing date the leak was found, and you have had no credit in the past 12 months. Apply in My Account within 90 days of the repair. LVVWD is at 702-870-2011.

How to find a leak at a Las Vegas water meter

LVVWD says to turn off all water inside and outside the house, then watch the red or white flow-indicator triangle on the meter. If it still moves, close the main shutoff; if the triangle keeps going, the leak is likely underground between the shutoff and the meter, and if it stops, the leak is elsewhere on the property. The main shutoff is usually in the front yard near the sewer riser cap, in the garage, or in the home's manifold. LVVWD says more than 20 percent of gravity-flush toilets leak. If you cannot find it, see leak detection.

Las Vegas hard water: 16 to 17 grains per gallon

LVVWD calls its water very hard, giving 291 ppm or 17 grains per gallon in one answer and 280 ppm or 16 grains per gallon in another. It says the chalky build-up on fixtures and spots on glassware are solely aesthetic and do not compromise drinking water. For particles from a softener or worn plumbing parts, LVVWD suggests a professional plumber or the softener maker. Pricing a new heater? See water heater repair.

Plumbing permits in the City of Las Vegas

The City of Las Vegas issues no-plans permits for a same-for-same water heater, including tankless, for water piping replacement, for building water and sewer repairs with no new connections, for gas line repair, and for water softeners with their piping. Ask the plumber whether the permit is in the quote. The City also runs a year-round amnesty that lets homeowners self-disclose work done without a permit without penalty on plan review and permit fees; call 702-229-6251.

Nevada plumbing licenses: C-1d and C-1h

Nevada licenses plumbing contractors under classification C-1, plumbing and heating. Subclassification C-1d covers plumbing, including water heating systems, and C-1h covers the installation, replacement and repair of water heaters. Check any license and any discipline on the NSCB's online license search and public disciplinary actions search, or call the Las Vegas office at (702) 486-1100.

Smell gas? Leave the house and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Water near outlets? Shut off power at the breaker only if you can reach it from a dry spot.
