Definition

Gas line repair is fixing or replacing a leaking or damaged natural gas or propane pipe between the meter and your appliances. HomeAdvisor prices most indoor leak repairs at $120 to $760.

Where the leak is decides the price. HomeAdvisor's 2026 guide puts a leak at a junction behind a stove at $120 to $250, a leak in a wall or crawl space at $270 to $760, and a buried line at $1,500 to $5,000. Fixr says a leaking line should be replaced rather than patched, at $23 to $35 per foot.

Do this now: if you smell gas

  1. Leave the house now and take everyone with you. The Kansas Corporation Commission says to leave immediately and not to look for the leak or shut appliance valves.
  2. Do not use light switches, phones or garage door openers on the way out, and do not start a car (KCC).
  3. Once you are outside and away from the house, call 911 or the gas utility.
  4. Stay out until a gas company employee says it is safe to go back in (KCC).
  5. After the utility has made it safe, call the plumber line for the repair on your side of the meter.

Is it an emergency? Any gas smell is

Any gas smell is an emergency for the gas utility first and the plumber second, and HomeAdvisor's 2026 guide puts the repair itself at $120 to $250 for a leak at a fitting behind a stove. The KCC lists these warning signs:

  • A rotten egg smell. Natural gas has no odor of its own; the smell is added so leaks can be noticed.
  • A blowing or hissing sound.
  • Dead or discolored plants, dirt blowing from a hole, or bubbling in wet ground over a buried line.
  • Not an emergency: a planned new line for a stove, dryer or generator. Book it and ask about the permit.

Signs of a gas leak

The main sign of a gas leak is a rotten egg smell. Natural gas has no odor on its own, so gas companies add mercaptan, which smells of sulfur, the Kansas Corporation Commission says. Its other signs:

  • A blowing or hissing sound.
  • Dead or discolored grass or plants in an otherwise green area.
  • Dirt or dust blowing from a hole in the ground.
  • Bubbles in standing water or wet ground.

The California Public Utilities Commission adds: do not smoke or light a flame, do not turn appliances on or off, do not use a phone in the area, do not start a car, and do not ring doorbells to warn neighbors. The Kansas Corporation Commission says not to go back in until a gas company employee says it is safe.

Who fixes a gas leak: the gas company or a plumber

The piping after the gas meter is usually the homeowner's to repair. Atmos Energy tells customers they are responsible for any gas piping on their property from the meter to the house, and that a licensed plumber or qualified contractor can locate, inspect and repair buried piping. CenterPoint Energy's customer notice, issued under federal rule 49 CFR 192.16, says customer-owned buried piping can corrode or leak if not maintained, and should be inspected for leaks periodically, and for corrosion if it is metal.

Gas line installation cost

Running a new gas line averages $598 in HomeAdvisor's 2026 data, typically $272 to $936, and $800 in Fixr's August 2025 guide, typically $500 to $2,000. HomeGuide's January 2026 guide puts extending an existing line at $350 to $2,000, or $350 to $800 for one nearby appliance, and a new line from the street at $2,000 to $10,000 or more. Per foot, HomeAdvisor lists $15 to $30 for a new line and HomeGuide $15 to $50 or more. HomeGuide prices moving a meter at $1,000 to $4,500.

Gas line to a stove, dryer or generator: cost

ApplianceInstalled (HomeGuide, Jan 2026)Per foot installed (Fixr, Aug 2025)
Stove or range$500 to $1,200$10 to $15
Dryer$400 to $900$10 to $20
Water heater$500 to $1,000$10 to $15
Generator$400 to $1,500+$20 to $25
Fireplace$500 to $1,000+$10 to $20
Outdoor grill or fire pit$600 to $1,300Grill $10 to $20; fire pit $15 to $25
Pool heater$500 to $1,500+$20 to $25

HomeAdvisor's 2026 guide adds that a kitchen stove line of 20 to 30 feet runs about $600.

Fixr's per-foot prices for generator and pool heater lines are the highest on its list. Generator installation and whole house generator cost cover the rest of that job. For a gas water heater swap, see water heater replacement cost or tankless installation.

Gas line permits and who can do the work

Nearly all gas line installations require a permit, HomeGuide says, at $100 to $300 or more. It says licensed plumbers usually handle gas lines, some states also license gas fitters, and it advises against doing gas work yourself. HomeAdvisor says to hire a licensed natural gas plumber, who typically pulls the permit.

Dallas shows how it works in practice. The city requires a plumbing permit pulled by a contractor with a Master Plumber license, or by an owner who lives in the home and has a homestead exemption. A city inspector witnesses a gas test at 3 psig for at least 15 minutes, covering all piping from the meter, and then releases the service to the gas utility for reconnection. Rules differ by city and state, so ask the plumber which permit applies. Business gas work is covered on commercial plumbing.

Call 811 before you dig

Call 811 at least two working days before digging, CenterPoint Energy says, and dig by hand near marked lines. Atmos says 811 marks utility-owned lines at no charge. Your own buried line from the meter to the house is customer-owned, so tell the plumber where it runs. The California PUC also directs people to call 811 to have pipelines marked before a project.

Gas line repair near me: what to ask before you book

  • License: ask for the plumbing or gas license number, and check it with your state or city.
  • Permit and test: ask whether the price includes the permit, the pressure test and the inspection.
  • Price per foot and material: HomeGuide notes CSST tubing requires bonding and grounding; ask how it will be done.
  • Utility coordination: who calls the gas company to shut off and restore service?
  • Insurance: ask for proof of insurance before work starts.

Gas line work is one line on home repair costs. Other plumbing jobs are on the plumbing hub. A gas furnace that will not light belongs on furnace repair, and a pilot that will not stay lit on a water heater on water heater repair.

Calls go to an independent company that serves your area and takes this kind of job. Ask for its license number and proof of insurance before work starts. How calls work.
