How to Unclog a Kitchen Sink: 3 Steps, Plumber $100 to $220
Unclog a kitchen sink with a cup plunger and by cleaning the P-trap; if it will not clear, a plumber charges $100 to $220 in HomeGuide's 2026 guide, and Angi says $110 to $215.
Skip boiling water on PVC pipe, and never plunge after a chemical cleaner. If other drains back up too, call.

Try the plunger and the trap first. If the sink still holds water, the plumber's price is the third row.
Do this now: how to unclog a kitchen sink safely
Shut off the water and the disposal, plunge with the other side sealed, then clean the trap: that order keeps you away from chemicals and boiling water. Step by step:
- Stop the water and the dishwasher. Do not run the faucet or start the dishwasher while the sink is full.
- Garbage disposal first. If the sink has one, turn off its power (unplug it or switch off the breaker) before you reach in. Moen says never to put your hand in a disposal; use tongs or needle-nose pliers. If it hums or will not start, press the reset button on the side or bottom of the unit (The Home Depot). Moen says running a jammed unit over and over can trip its breaker.
- Plunge with a cup plunger. Consumer Reports says a cup plunger is the right one for a sink. The Home Depot says to leave enough water to cover the plunger head, seal the other side of a double sink with a stopper, and clamp the flexible dishwasher hose so plunging does not push water into the dishwasher. Keep the cup under water and lift it only an inch or so on each upstroke.
- Try hot water and dish soap. Angi suggests about 1 cup of dish soap with hot water, then 10 to 15 minutes. Do not use boiling water: Angi says it can damage PVC pipe, and The Home Depot says not to use it on PVC drains.
- Clean the P-trap. Put a bucket under the curved pipe below the sink, unscrew the nuts, empty and rinse the trap, and put it back hand-tight. The Home Depot says plastic connectors can crack if you overtighten them. Run water and check for drips.
- Never mix products. The Alabama Department of Public Health says drain cleaners mixed with other cleaners such as bleach give off fumes that irritate the eyes and throat and can cause burns, and Consumer Reports says never to mix drain cleaners or use them with bleach.
- Already poured in a drain cleaner? Do not plunge or snake it. Roto-Rooter says not to use chemicals and a plunger at the same time, and Angi says not to plunge after a chemical cleaner, because it can splash back on you. Tell the plumber which product you used. If it gets on skin or in eyes, MedlinePlus says to flush with lots of water for at least 15 minutes and call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222.
Is it an emergency? When it's time to call a plumber
Call a plumber when the kitchen sink is not the only drain backing up, when water or sewage comes up in a tub, shower or floor drain, or when the dishwasher or disposal is part of the problem. HomeGuide says several drains backing up at once is a common sign of a main line stoppage, and Angi lists sewer backups among the most common plumbing emergencies.
- More than one drain is slow or backing up. Angi's sign of a main line problem is several fixtures that seem clogged at once. A plunger at the sink will not reach it; see sewer line repair.
- Water or sewage comes up in a tub, shower or floor drain when the sink or dishwasher drains. HomeGuide lists water pooling at basement drains and gurgling as main line signs. Stop using water and see sewage cleanup if it reached the floor.
- The dishwasher is involved: it will not drain, or dirty water backs into it. The Home Depot says to clamp the dishwasher hose before plunging so water does not back up into it, which shows how the two connect.
- The garbage disposal hums, leaks or will not reset. HomeGuide puts a disposal clog at $70 to $200 and a jam at $75 to $175. See garbage disposal repair.
- The sink clogs again within days or weeks. The Home Depot says that when a snake meets no resistance near the sink, the clog may be further along in the branch drain inside the wall.
- You used a chemical cleaner and the sink is still full. Do not plunge. Tell the plumber what is in the sink before they start.
A clog that floods the cabinet or floor is a water damage problem too: photograph it before cleanup and call your insurer. The Texas Department of Insurance says most policies cover sudden and accidental water damage, not slow leaks. See water damage restoration, and emergency plumber for after-hours calls.
A clogged kitchen sink is a blockage, most often grease, in the sink's trap or the drain line behind it. HomeGuide puts a plumber's price to clear one at $100 to $220.
How to unclog a kitchen sink with standing water
To unclog a kitchen sink with standing water, leave about enough water to cover the plunger cup, The Home Depot says, and bail the rest into a bucket. Then seal the other bowl, clamp the dishwasher hose and plunge. If the water will not move, put a bucket under the P-trap before you loosen it, because the trap and the sink will drain into it.
How to unclog a kitchen sink with a garbage disposal
With a garbage disposal, the clog is often in the disposal itself or in the trap below it. Turn the power off before anything goes into the opening (Moen). Angi says a disposal that will not turn on has probably overheated and switched itself off; press the reset button on the unit. The Home Depot says running it may break up a clog inside. Clogs and jams that a reset does not fix are a repair call: HomeGuide's range is $70 to $200 for a clog and $200 to $550 to replace the unit.
Does baking soda and vinegar unclog a kitchen sink?
Baking soda and vinegar is a gentle first try, not a sure fix. Angi's method is 1 cup of baking soda, then 1 cup of white vinegar, seal the drain for 15 to 20 minutes, then run hot water. The Home Depot calls the mix gentler on pipes than chemical drain openers. Neither publisher gives a success rate, so if it fails, go back to the plunger and the trap rather than reaching for a chemical.
Are chemical drain cleaners safe for a kitchen sink?
Chemical drain cleaners are the step to skip: HomeGuide says they can eat through or damage the pipe, and Angi says liquid cleaners can erode pipes. MedlinePlus says drain openers contain lye, sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid and can cause severe eye burns. Poison Control says splashback is more likely when too much product goes into a fully blocked drain. If you still use one, follow the label, wear goggles and gloves, never mix it with another product, and do not plunge afterward.
Kitchen drain still blocked after the plunger and the trap? Call the plumber line before you reach for a chemical.
How much does a plumber charge to unclog a kitchen sink?
A plumber charges $100 to $220 to clear a kitchen sink in HomeGuide's 2026 guide and $110 to $215 in Angi's August 2026 data. HomeAdvisor says simple calls such as a clogged drain often get a flat rate of $100 to $400, and the service call fee of $100 to $250 usually covers the first hour.
