Do this now: toilet overflowing or leaking

Stop the water first. These steps work for an overflow and for a leak at the base.

  1. Stop the tank from refilling. Roto-Rooter says to lift the tank lid and lift the ball float or fill valve, or press the flapper down.
  2. Close the shutoff valve behind the toilet. Roto-Rooter says to turn it off so no more water enters the tank, and American Standard says to shut off the supply before the bowl overflows.
  3. Do not keep flushing. American Standard says not to try to clear a clog by flushing again and again.
  4. Water near outlets or cords? Stay out of it. The Red Cross warns not to touch electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water.
  5. Water on floors or walls? Take photos before you clean up (FEMA), then call your insurer. The Texas Department of Insurance says most policies cover sudden water damage but not gradual leaks. Do not sign your claim over to a contractor; Florida bans assignment of benefits on policies issued on or after January 1, 2023.
  6. More than one drain backing up? HomeGuide says several drains backing up at once is a common sign of a main line stoppage. Stop using water in the house and call; see sewer line repair.

Is it urgent? When a toilet problem needs a plumber today

A toilet needs a plumber today when it is the only toilet and it will not flush, when sewage is coming up, or when water keeps leaking onto the floor after you shut the valve. HomeGuide lists a fully clogged toilet, especially in a one-bathroom house, as a plumbing emergency, and Angi lists overflowing toilets among common emergencies.

  • Call now: the only toilet is unusable, sewage in the bowl or tub, water spreading under flooring, or a crack in the tank or bowl that is leaking.
  • Can wait: a running toilet with the valve closed, a slow flush, a loose seat.
  • Cost of calling at night: HomeAdvisor says night, weekend or holiday toilet work adds $100 to $300, and Angi puts emergency toilet repair at $150 to $375.

For an overflow that soaked the floor, Fixr's water damage range starts at $350 for an overflowing toilet; see water damage restoration if water reached the ceiling below or the subfloor.

Definition

Toilet repair cost is what a plumber charges to fix a toilet's tank parts, seal or drain without replacing it; HomeAdvisor puts it at $150 to $391 in 2026, and a new toilet installed runs $350 to $800 in HomeGuide's guide.

How much does a toilet cost? Price by type

A new toilet costs $100 to $3,000 or more before installation in HomeGuide's guide, and most two-piece models sell for $100 to $500. Installed, a standard toilet runs $350 to $800 (HomeGuide) or about $374 on average (HomeAdvisor, 2026). The type matters most:

Toilet typeToilet only (HomeGuide)Installed (HomeGuide)Average unit (HomeAdvisor)

For water use, the EPA says older toilets use as much as 6 gallons a flush, the federal standard is 1.6 gallons, and WaterSense labeled toilets use 1.28 gallons or less. The EPA says replacing old toilets saves a home nearly 13,000 gallons and more than $170 a year in water costs.

Toilet leaking at the base: cause and cost

A toilet leaking at the base almost always needs a new wax ring, which HomeGuide puts at about $230 to pull, reseal and reseat and HomeAdvisor at $50 to $200. HomeGuide says wax rings last 20 to 30 years and should be replaced if you smell sewage, see leaks or water stains, or the toilet wobbles.

If the flange under the wax ring is broken, the job grows: HomeAdvisor puts a flange at $145 to $350 and says a cracked flange should be replaced promptly, because it can break the wax seal and damage the subfloor. Water that sat under the floor can mean floor repair too; HomeGuide lists tile and grout repair at $10 to $50 a square foot. If you are not sure where water is coming from, see leak detection.

Running toilet: what it costs to fix

A running toilet costs $100 to $400 to fix in HomeAdvisor's 2026 data, and most fixes are a new flapper or fill valve. HomeGuide says a plumber charges about $130 to put in a new flapper and chain, and $70 to $150 for a simple valve replacement; the flapper part alone is $12 to $30.

Flappers wear out. HomeGuide says they last about 4 to 5 years, and harsh chemical cleaners can cut that to under a year. To check for a silent leak, the EPA's dye test works: put a few drops of food coloring in the tank, wait 10 minutes without flushing, and if color shows in the bowl, the toilet is leaking. The Las Vegas Valley Water District says more than 20 percent of gravity-flush toilets leak.

Toilet overflowing: why it happens and what it costs

An overflowing toilet is usually a clog, and HomeAdvisor puts clog clearing at $85 to $600 while HomeGuide puts a plumber unclogging a toilet at $100 to $275. If the toilet overflows when you run the shower or washer, or other drains back up too, the clog is likely in the main line, which HomeGuide prices at $175 to $800 to clear; see drain cleaning.

Insurance: the Texas Department of Insurance says most homeowner and renter policies cover sudden and accidental water damage, such as a toilet overflow, but not gradual leaks or seepage. Photograph the damage before cleanup and call your insurer.

Repair or replace your toilet?

Repair a toilet when the problem is a part in the tank or the wax ring; replace it when the bowl is cracked or the toilet is old and keeps needing work. HomeGuide says most toilets last 10 to 20 years, and that a cracked bowl means buying a new toilet, since the toilet has to come off the floor anyway. HomeAdvisor says replacing only a cracked tank is a budget option if the bowl is fine and the new tank matches the brand and model.

  • Repair: running, slow-filling, a leak at the base, a loose toilet. Most of these are $50 to $400 in HomeAdvisor's 2026 table.
  • Replace: a cracked bowl, frequent clogs or leaks, a wobbling or discolored toilet, or an old high-flow model (HomeGuide). A new toilet is $350 to $800 installed.

Toilet replacement cost: what adds to the bill

Replacing a toilet in the same spot takes about 2 to 3 hours and costs $350 to $800 (HomeGuide), but a few things raise it. HomeAdvisor and HomeGuide both put removing and hauling away the old toilet at $50 to $200, HomeAdvisor says moving a toilet to a new spot averages about $3,000, and repairing the toilet drain pipe averages $670. HomeGuide says plumbers working outside business hours can double or triple the cost, so a planned replacement is best booked on a weekday.

Hiring a plumber for a toilet: what to ask

  1. What is the service call fee? HomeGuide puts a minimum call-out charge at $50 to $200.
  2. Is this a flat price or hourly? HomeAdvisor says labor is 60% to 75% of a toilet repair bill.
  3. Is the wax ring and haul-away included if the toilet comes off the floor?
  4. What is your license number? Check it with your state board; the plumbing license table lists six states.
