Do not pour chemical drain cleaner in a toilet. If water comes up in a tub or floor drain, the clog is past the toilet: call.

Plunger first. If the bowl still will not drain, a plumber's price to clear one toilet is the third row.

Do this now: how to unclog a toilet safely

Stop flushing, stop the water, then plunge: those three steps clear most clogs without chemicals or a service call. In order:

  1. Do not flush again. American Standard says not to try to clear a clog by flushing over and over. If the bowl is close to the rim, turn off the shutoff valve behind the toilet, or lift the tank lid and push the flapper down so no more water comes in (Roto-Rooter).
  2. Get a flange plunger. Consumer Reports says cup plungers are for sinks and tubs; a toilet needs a flange plunger, the kind with a soft rubber flap that seals better. Put on rubber gloves and lay old towels around the base.
  3. Plunge. Roto-Rooter says you need water in the bowl, enough to cover the cup. Seat the cup over the hole, push gently once to force the air out, then make firm pushes without breaking the seal. Check after 15 to 20 seconds. American Standard says it can take 5 to 10 minutes and a few tries.
  4. Test with one flush only after the water level drops. If it rises again, plunge again before you flush (Roto-Rooter).
  5. No chemical drain cleaner in the toilet. Drano says not to use its clog removers in toilets, and Consumer Reports says the heat of a chemical reaction can crack porcelain.
  6. Never mix products. The Alabama Department of Public Health says drain cleaners mixed with other cleaners such as bleach give off fumes that irritate the eyes and throat and can cause burns, and Consumer Reports says never to mix drain cleaners or use them with bleach.
  7. Already poured in a drain cleaner? Do not plunge or snake it. Roto-Rooter says not to use chemicals and a plunger at the same time, and Angi says not to plunge after a chemical cleaner, because it can splash back on you. Tell the plumber which product you used. If it gets on skin or in eyes, MedlinePlus says to flush with lots of water for at least 15 minutes and call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222.

Is it an emergency? When it's time to call a plumber

Call a plumber when more than one drain is backing up, when sewage shows up in a tub, shower or floor drain, or when the bowl keeps rising after a few rounds of plunging. HomeGuide counts a fully clogged toilet as an emergency, especially in a house with one bathroom, and Angi lists overflowing toilets among the most common plumbing emergencies.

  • More than one drain is backing up. HomeGuide says several drains backing up at once is a common sign of a main line stoppage. That is a sewer line problem, and a plunger will not reach it.
  • Sewage or dirty water comes up in a tub, shower or floor drain, often when you flush. HomeGuide lists water pooling at basement drains and gurgling as main line signs. Stop using water in the house. If sewage reached the floor, see sewage cleanup.
  • Water keeps rising after you flush, even after plunging. Turn off the valve behind the toilet and call; an overflow is how a clog becomes water damage.
  • The same toilet clogs again and again. Something may be stuck in the trap or the line. Pierce County, Washington, says wipes do not break down and can block a home's sewer line, especially an older one with grease or roots in it.
  • You used a chemical cleaner and it is still clogged. Consumer Reports says that if mechanical methods and a drain cleaner have not worked, the next step is a plumber.

If an overflow soaked the floor, photograph it before you clean up and call your insurer. The Texas Department of Insurance says most homeowner and renters policies cover sudden and accidental water damage such as a toilet overflow, but not slow leaks. Bigger cleanups are covered in water damage restoration. After hours, see emergency plumber for what to do before the plumber arrives.

Definition

A clogged toilet is a blockage in the toilet's built-in trap or the drain line below it that stops the bowl from draining. HomeGuide puts a plumber's price to clear one at $100 to $275.

How to unclog a toilet without a plunger

To unclog a toilet without a plunger, American Standard suggests a generous squirt of liquid dish soap and a pot of hot water that is not boiling, left for about 10 minutes. It also gives a baking soda and vinegar version: 1 cup of each, wait about 5 minutes, add hot water that is not boiling, and wait 10 more. Both methods end with plunging, so a $4 to $20 flange plunger (HomeGuide) is still the tool to buy.

A toilet auger, also called a closet auger, reaches past the bowl into the trap. HomeGuide puts one at $10 to $50. Consumer Reports says to wear safety glasses and gloves with any snake, and Roto-Rooter warns that a snake used the wrong way will scratch the porcelain. The Home Depot's auger method: feed the cable in until you feel resistance, lock it and turn the crank, then pull it back out and flush.

Will Drano unclog a toilet?

Drano says its clog removers should not be used in toilets at all; the only Drano product it recommends for a slow toilet is Max Build-Up Remover. Consumer Reports says the heat of a chemical reaction can crack porcelain, and HomeGuide says chemical cleaners can damage the pipe itself. MedlinePlus lists lye, sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid among drain opener ingredients and says they can burn eyes badly enough to cause permanent vision loss. Poison Control says splashback is more likely when too much product goes into a fully blocked drain, which is what a clogged toilet is.

Why does my toilet keep clogging?

A toilet that keeps clogging usually has one of four causes: too much paper at once, things that should not be flushed, an older toilet with a weak flush, or a problem in the main line.

  • Too much paper in one flush. Roto-Rooter suggests flushing more than once rather than sending a large wad down at once.
  • Things that do not break down. American Standard says facial tissues, cotton swabs, tampons and dental floss can clog a toilet. Pierce County says "flushable" wipes are not flushable: anything that is not toilet paper goes in the trash.
  • An older toilet. American Standard says older toilets may have weaker flushing power and suggests a newer model. HomeGuide puts a new toilet at $250 to $750 installed (2023 figures).
  • The main line. If other drains are slow or gurgle too, see drain cleaning and sewer line repair.

How much does a plumber charge to unclog a toilet?

A plumber charges $100 to $275 to clear a clogged toilet in HomeGuide's 2026 guide and $110 to $275 in Angi's August 2026 data. HomeAdvisor says simple calls such as a clog or a toilet repair often get a flat rate of $100 to $400, and that the service call fee of $100 to $250 usually covers the first hour.

After hours, HomeGuide lists $300 to $800 to snake a clogged toilet or drain.
