Well Pump Repair Cost: $300 to $600 (HomeGuide 2026)
Well pump repair costs $300 to $600 in HomeGuide's 2026 guide, with a $450 national average.
HomeAdvisor's June 2026 data runs higher, $373 to $1,624 with a $974 average, so the two guides disagree on the typical bill. A new pressure switch is $150 to $200 in HomeGuide's figures and $120 to $175 in HomeAdvisor's.

Is it urgent? Warning signs a well pump problem can't wait
Turn off the pump's breaker before you touch the pressure switch or the control box. Both carry line voltage. Franklin Electric's 2026 installation manual warns that the voltages in these systems can cause severe injury or death, that some controls hold lethal voltage after the power is off, and that you should allow 5 minutes for it to discharge before removing covers.
- Call now: no water at any tap, a pump that runs and will not shut off, or a breaker that trips again right after you reset it. Franklin lists a leak in the system and welded switch contacts among the causes of a pump that never stops.
- This week: a pump that clicks on and off when nobody is using water, or pressure that starts strong and fades. HomeGuide ties the first to the pressure switch or a waterlogged tank and the second to the tank or a check valve.
- Can wait: pressure that is steady but a little lower than you would like, or a yearly checkup. NGWA says a licensed or certified well systems professional should look at the well every year.
A well pressure switch is the control that starts the pump when pressure drops to its cut-in setting and stops it at cut-out; the Minnesota Department of Health says pumps typically shut off at 40 to 60 psi and restart at 20 to 40 psi.
How much does well pump repair cost?
Well pump repair costs $300 to $600 for most jobs in HomeGuide's guide, with a $450 national average, a $150 minimum and a $1,500 maximum. HomeAdvisor's June 2026 data puts the normal range at $373 to $1,624 and the average at $974. Bob Vila lists general repairs at $300 to $1,300, and HomeGuide's separate pump guide stretches repairs from $25 to $2,000. The two averages do not agree, so ask which parts a quote counts as the repair.
Labor is the other half. HomeGuide puts licensed plumbers at $75 to $150 an hour and a two-man well repair crew at $150 to $300 an hour. HomeAdvisor lists average labor at $50 an hour, a house call fee of $100 to $150, and weekend or emergency rates that usually double, to $100 an hour. HomeGuide says most companies charge a service call fee to diagnose the problem and some apply it to the repair. A submersible pump has to be pulled from the well to be worked on, which HomeGuide says adds labor time and complexity; no guide we checked prices the pull on its own.
Well pump repair cost by part

Parts and labor as each guide prints them. The pump motor HomeGuide figure comes from its pump replacement guide.
If the part on the quote is the pump itself, compare it with what a new well pump costs installed. A tank that has lost its air charge is priced on the pressure tank replacement page.
Well pressure switch replacement: cost and signs it failed
Replacing the pressure switch for a well pump costs $150 to $200 in HomeGuide's guide, $120 to $175 in HomeAdvisor's and $50 to $150 in Bob Vila's. HomeGuide's pump guide lists the switch as a $25 to $100 repair part.
- The pump never stops. Franklin's manual says to check the switch for welded contacts and check its adjustments.
- The pump never starts. A damaged pressure switch is one of the causes Franklin lists for a motor that does not start.
- What the pro measures. Franklin tells installers to check voltage at the contact points, because poor contact can leave less than line voltage reaching the pump.
- Who should open it. The Square D Pumptrol bulletin says electrical equipment should be serviced only by qualified electrical maintenance personnel.
Well pressure switch settings: cut-in, cut-out and the tank precharge
Common switch settings are pairs such as 30/50 or 40/60, the pressure where the pump starts and the pressure where it stops. The Minnesota Department of Health puts typical shutoff at 40 to 60 psi and restart at 20 to 40 psi. Amtrol's Well-X1 control ships at 40 psi cut-in and 60 psi cut-out, a 20 psi differential.
- The tank has to match. Amtrol says the tank precharge should be 2 psi below the switch's cut-in; its residential manual gives a 30/50 switch with a 28 psi precharge as the example.
- How the nuts work. On a Square D Pumptrol, Schneider Electric says turning the large range nut down (clockwise) raises cut-in, and turning the smaller differential nut down raises cut-out.
- After any change, the Square D bulletin says to cycle the switch several times to confirm the setting.
- We describe the adjustment so a quote makes sense; leave the turning to the pro.
No water from the well: the common causes
HomeGuide says no water can come from electrical problems, a seized pump motor or a broken pipe connection. Franklin's checklist for a motor that will not start begins with the simplest: a blown fuse or tripped breaker, which it says to replace or reset. After that come wrong voltage, the pressure switch, the control box, damaged wiring, and a bound pump, where Franklin says amp readings run 3 to 6 times higher than normal until the overload trips. If the pump runs but nothing comes out, the causes change; the runs but no water section covers that case.
Well pump troubleshooting: symptoms and likely causes
| What you see | Likely causes | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Pump will not start, no water | Tripped breaker or blown fuse, no power or wrong voltage, damaged pressure switch, control box fault, damaged wiring, a bound pump, damaged cable or motor | Franklin Electric, 2026 |
| Pump runs and will not shut off | Welded switch contacts or switch adjustment, low water in the well, a leak, a worn pump, a loose coupling or broken shaft, a blocked screen, a check valve stuck closed, a control box fault | Franklin Electric, 2026 |
| Pump starts too often | Pressure switch, a check valve stuck open, a waterlogged tank, a leak | Franklin Electric, 2026 |
| Clicks on and off with no tap open | Pressure switch problems or a waterlogged pressure tank | HomeGuide, Aug 2025 |
| Strong pressure that fades fast | A failing pressure tank or check valve | HomeGuide, Aug 2025 |
Franklin gives one test for a worn pump: lower the pressure switch setting, and if the pump then shuts off, worn parts may be the fault. It is a test for the well contractor, since it means opening the switch.
Well pump keeps running or won't shut off
Franklin's list of causes for a pump that never stops runs from the switch (welded contacts, wrong adjustment) to the water (low level in the well) to the plumbing (a leak, a check valve stuck closed) to the pump (worn parts, a loose coupling, a blocked screen). Turning the breaker off stops it until someone can look. If the pump short cycles instead, starting and stopping every few seconds, Franklin points to a check valve stuck open or a waterlogged tank, and says excessive cycling shortens the life of control components.
None of the manuals, extension pages or cost guides we used covers a frozen pressure switch, so we give no thawing steps for the switch. For the supply pipes around it, see frozen pipes, and leave the switch to the well contractor.
Who repairs a well pump: well contractor, pump installer or plumber?
NGWA says most states license water well contractors, usually through the Department of Natural Resources or the Department of Health. Minnesota splits it in two: a Limited Pump, Pitless, and Screen Contractor may install pumps and pumping equipment, while a Well Contractor may also build, repair and seal wells. The state's handbook says defective well parts should be repaired by a licensed well contractor or pump installer. Massachusetts guidelines say the wiring and piping between the well and the pump controls or tank should be done by a MassDEP-certified pump installer or well driller.
Ask the company for its well contractor or pump installer license number and proof of insurance yourself. HomeGuide also suggests checking how long the company has been in business; it uses 5 years as the line.
Questions to ask before you book a well pump service call
- What is the service call fee, and does it go toward the repair? HomeAdvisor's range is $100 to $150.
- Is the pump submersible or a jet pump? A submersible has to be pulled, which adds labor.
- What exactly failed? Ask for the part by name: switch, capacitor, control box, check valve or motor.
- Repair or replace? HomeGuide suggests replacing a pump that is more than 10 years old or has been neglected.
- Will the well be disinfected after the work? Penn State Extension lists working on a well as a reason to shock chlorinate; the well water testing guide covers the retest.
Pump clicking, running nonstop or dead? Call the well line and describe what the pressure gauge does.

Do this now: no water or a pump that won't stop
- Check the breaker or fuse for the pump. Franklin's first fix for a motor that will not start is to reset the breaker or replace the fuse. If it trips again, leave it off and call.
- Read the pressure gauge. Note the pressure when the pump starts and when it stops. NGWA's homeowner check is whether the system works and whether the tank holds pressure.
- Listen with every tap closed. A pump that cycles with no water in use points to the switch, the tank or a leak.
- Look for water where it should not be: a wet spot in the yard over the line, or a leak at the tank or fittings.
- If the pump runs but gives no water, turn it off. Franklin's advice for a low well is to shut off the pump and wait for the well to recover.
- Call the well line with what the gauge did and how old the pump is. Pressure that is weak but steady may be a house problem instead; see low water pressure in the house.

Questions people ask
How much does well pump repair cost?
HomeGuide puts most well pump repairs at $300 to $600 with a $450 national average. HomeAdvisor's 2026 data says $373 to $1,624 with a $974 average. Bob Vila lists general repairs at $300 to $1,300.
How much does it cost to replace a well pressure switch?
$150 to $200 in HomeGuide's guide, $120 to $175 in HomeAdvisor's 2026 data and $50 to $150 in Bob Vila's. The part alone is $25 to $100 in HomeGuide's pump guide.
What should a well pressure switch be set at?
The Minnesota Department of Health says pumps typically shut off at 40 to 60 psi and restart at 20 to 40 psi. Amtrol says the tank precharge should sit 2 psi below cut-in, so a 30/50 switch takes a 28 psi precharge.
Why is there no water coming from my well?
HomeGuide lists electrical problems, a seized pump motor or a broken pipe connection. Franklin Electric's manual starts with a tripped breaker or blown fuse, then the pressure switch, control box, wiring and a bound pump.
Why does my well pump keep running?
Franklin Electric's 2026 manual lists welded pressure switch contacts, low water in the well, a leak, a worn pump, a loose coupling, a blocked screen, a check valve stuck closed and a control box fault. Turning off the breaker stops it until it is checked.
Why does my well pump turn on and off so often?
HomeGuide says a pump that cycles with no water in use suggests a pressure switch problem or a waterlogged pressure tank. Franklin Electric adds a check valve stuck open or a leak, and says excessive cycling shortens the life of the controls.
Is it safe to work on a well pressure switch myself?
Franklin Electric warns the voltage can cause severe injury or death and that some controls hold lethal voltage after power is off; it says to wait 5 minutes. The Square D bulletin says only qualified electrical personnel should service it.
Who do I call to fix a well pump?
A well contractor or pump installer. NGWA says most states license water well contractors; Minnesota licenses pump installers separately from well contractors. HomeAdvisor puts the house call fee at $100 to $150.
