Trenchless Sewer Line Replacement Cost: $50 to $250 per Foot
Trenchless sewer line replacement costs $50 to $250 per foot in Angi's 2026 guide, the same range Fixr gives, and Angi says that is about what digging costs per foot.
HomeAdvisor splits it by method: lining $90 to $250 a foot, pipe bursting $60 to $200. HomeGuide prices a 40 foot line at $2,000 to $10,000.

Is it urgent? Warning signs that change the plan
Trenchless replacement is planned work; the Knoxville Utilities Board's lining spec requires the line cleaned and filmed first.
- Call now: sewage coming up into a tub, shower or floor drain. Stop running water and see sewage cleanup; an emergency plumber clears the line before anyone prices a liner. On a septic system, start with what to do about a septic backup instead.
- This week: a camera report that shows a collapse or a sag. HomeAdvisor says trenchless is sometimes unavailable once a pipe has completely collapsed, and Roto-Rooter says a bellied line has to be dug up at the belly, so get a dig price too.
- Can wait: an old line that still drains. HomeGuide gives clay and Orangeburg pipe 30 to 60 years, so plan the job, get two quotes and choose the method before the pipe fails.
Trenchless sewer line replacement renews the pipe between the house and the street main from one or two small pits, either by curing a resin liner inside the old pipe or by breaking the old pipe apart while new pipe is pulled in behind it. Angi and Fixr put it at $50 to $250 per foot.
Trenchless sewer repair cost: lining vs pipe bursting
Pipe lining costs $90 to $250 per foot and pipe bursting $60 to $200 in HomeAdvisor's June 2026 guide, and three other cost guides land within $10 of those numbers at either end.
| Method, per linear foot | HomeAdvisor (Jun 2026) | Angi (Jul 2026) | Fixr (Jan 2025) | HomeServe (Jun 2025) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cured-in-place lining (CIPP) | $90 to $250 | $80 to $250 | $80 to $250 | $90 to $250 |
| Pipe bursting | $60 to $200 | $60 to $200 | $50 to $200 | $60 to $200 |
| Pull-in-place lining | Not listed | Not listed | $60 to $200 | Not listed |
Materials and labor. HomeGuide lists lining and bursting at the same ranges as HomeAdvisor and adds spin-casting at $80 to $250 per foot.
Angi's own guide to pipe bursting runs wider, $50 to $250 per foot, and says bursting sits at the high end and can cost up to 50% more than open excavation. Angi's guide to skipping the backhoe makes the other half of the point: trenchless can save up to 75% in the best case, but it is not automatically cheaper. Which one wins depends on what is above the pipe.
What a whole trenchless sewer line costs by length
A 40 foot sewer line costs $2,000 to $10,000 to replace in HomeGuide's December 2025 guide, which prices the work at $50 to $250 a foot whatever the method, so the length of your line sets most of the total.
| Line length | Replacement cost (HomeGuide) |
|---|---|
| 10 feet | $500 to $2,500 |
| 20 feet | $1,000 to $5,000 |
| 40 feet | $2,000 to $10,000 |
| 60 feet | $3,000 to $15,000 |
| 80 feet | $4,000 to $20,000 |
HomeGuide, December 2025, at $50 to $250 per linear foot.
Most residential laterals run 20 to 80 feet, according to a 2023 setup guide by HammerHead Trenchless published in Trenchless Technology, so the 20 and 80 foot rows bracket most houses.
Published averages disagree: about $9,000 for a lining project (Angi), $3,319 for a full replacement by any method (HomeAdvisor) and $6,000 (HomeGuide). Compare a quote with the per-foot rows, not an average.
Trenchless vs dig and replace: which costs less?
Per foot the two are close: Angi puts traditional sewer repair or replacement at $3,130 on average, with most jobs at $1,310 to $4,960, and says trenchless costs roughly the same per foot. The gap opens when the trench has to go through something.
| What digging adds | Published price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Slab broken up and restored | $300 to $350 per linear foot | Angi, Aug 2026 |
| Ground excavation | $30 to $70 per cubic foot | HomeAdvisor, Jun 2026 |
| Digging down to a collapsed pipe | $400 to $1,200 per 100 linear feet | HomeAdvisor, Jun 2026 |
| Excavation, typical add | Around $1,000 | Fixr, Jan 2025 |
| New sod | $1 to $2 per sq ft | HomeServe, Jun 2025 |
| Landscaping put back | $4 to $12 per sq ft | HomeServe, Jun 2025 |
Trenchless work avoids most of these, but not the access pits.
Trenchless still digs. Angi says pipe bursting needs two access holes, and HammerHead's guide puts one in the basement where the sewer leaves the foundation and one near the sidewalk, by the cleanout. Under a slab, the slab row is the number to beat.
How pipe lining and pipe bursting work
- Cured-in-place lining (CIPP). Angi describes a fiberglass tube coated with epoxy resin pulled into the old pipe and inflated. After a few hours the epoxy hardens into a new pipe inside the old one, and a robotic cutter reopens the connection to the main. The old pipe stays in the ground.
- Pipe bursting. A burst head with a blade is pulled through the old line by a hydraulic puller and fractures it, and new high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe follows behind, per HammerHead's guide. Angi says the new pipe takes the old one's place.
- How far one pull goes. HammerHead's Portaburst PB30 pulls up to 150 feet at once, and bends of 22, 45 or 90 degrees change how the job is set up.
Drain lines inside the house are a related job with their own prices; see cast iron and Orangeburg pipe replacement.
When trenchless sewer replacement will not work
Trenchless will not fix a sag. Roto-Rooter says trenchless technology cannot be used on a bellied line; the line has to be dug up at the belly and given a new section of pipe.
- Collapsed pipe. HomeAdvisor says trenchless is sometimes unavailable once a pipe has completely collapsed, and Angi says collapse and improper slope may need excavation. The Knoxville spec warns that a collapsed pipe or protruding service taps can stop a liner from going in.
- Small or very old pipe, for lining. Angi says a liner shrinks the pipe's diameter, so it may not suit pipes that are already small, and very old, narrow or damaged pipe might not qualify.
- Pipe bursting limits. Angi lists city utilities in the way, a job that needs only a minor repair, pipe buried too shallow, steel or ductile iron pipe, and a city that does not allow bursting.
- Bends and offsets. The Knoxville spec says a lateral liner has to conform to offset joints, bends and misshapen sections.
All of this shows on video. A sewer camera inspection before the quote tells you which method the pipe can take, and if it shows roots or one cracked joint rather than a failed pipe, a spot sewer line repair may be enough. The line has to be cleaned before it is lined either way (Knoxville spec); hydro jetting cost covers that step.
How long does a trenchless sewer liner last?
A cured-in-place lateral liner is built for 50 years: the Knoxville Utilities Board's specification refers to the liner's 50-year design life. Insituform, which makes and installs CIPP liners, says the first pipe it lined, in 1971, is still in use, and claims 50 or more years if the liner is installed properly and maintained. That is a maker's claim, not an independent test.
For a pipe that is replaced rather than lined, This Old House gives PVC 100 years or more. Whatever is quoted, get the warranty on the liner or pipe and on the labor in writing.
How long does trenchless sewer replacement take?
Often one day. Angi says a crew can be in and out in a few hours, and its pipe bursting guide says bursting can finish in hours where excavation takes days or weeks. HomeGuide puts sewer line replacement in general at 1 to 5 days, depending on length and obstacles. Lining adds waiting time while the resin cures; bursting does not (Angi).
Extra costs on a trenchless sewer quote
Expect a camera inspection on the bill before any liner or new pipe goes in: $100 to $500 in HomeAdvisor's guide, and Fixr says video inspection adds $200 to $400 to a project.
| Add-on | Published price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Camera inspection | $100 to $500 | HomeAdvisor, Jun 2026 |
| Camera inspection | $125 to $500 | HomeGuide, Dec 2025 |
| Camera inspection | Around $300 to $400 | Angi, Jul 2026 |
| Hydro jetting | $600 to $1,400 in one section; $250 to $800 in its repair table | HomeGuide, Dec 2025 |
| New cleanout | $500 to $2,000 | HomeGuide, Dec 2025 |
| Permit | $30 to $500 | HomeGuide, Dec 2025 |
| Permit | $100 to $1,000 | This Old House, Mar 2026 |
| Labor | $45 to $200 an hour | Angi, Aug 2026 |
HomeGuide's sewer guide prints two different hydro jetting ranges; both are shown. HomeAdvisor lists a $200 permit fee.
The Knoxville spec films the line before lining and again after the connections are reopened; ask whether both runs are priced.
Have a dig quote in hand? Call the plumber line and ask for a lining or bursting price for the same number of feet.
Who owns the sewer lateral? Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, San Diego and New York
In Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and San Diego the homeowner is responsible for the lateral up to the public sewer, so the bill is usually yours.
- Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh Water says the property owner is responsible for the entire lateral; the utility maintains the main and the wye fitting at the joint.
- Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Water Department puts the house drain, curb trap, lateral and slant on the owner, up to the point where the private lateral meets the public sewer.
- San Diego. The City says roots, cooking grease and debris in a lateral are the owner's responsibility, and that it will under no circumstances dig on private property.
- New York City. The Department of Buildings says the sewer main is in the middle of the street, only a Licensed Master Plumber can file a house connection application, and work on an existing line needs a DEP Repair or Relay permit.
A house on a septic system has no lateral to the city; the line runs to a tank. See septic tank pumping and what a new septic system costs.
Does homeowners insurance pay for trenchless sewer replacement?
A base policy usually does not. The Texas Office of Public Insurance Counsel says service line coverage is not usually offered in the base policy, so you pay to add it; its sample limits are $10,000 or $25,000 with a $500 deductible.
- What it pays and what it leaves out. Texas OPIC says the endorsement pays to repair or replace the line, dig it up and restore the landscaping, and typically excludes septic systems, wells, and pipes that run through or under your home. That last exclusion matters if the failed section is under the slab.
- Roots are disputed. HomeAdvisor says certain policies cover accidental damage such as roots blocking the line; Bob Vila says root damage is typically excluded, while Texas OPIC lists tree and root damage among what the add-on typically covers. Read your policy and call your insurer before work starts.
- Sewage in the house is a separate question. Ask your insurer how a backup inside the house is handled before cleanup starts.
Questions to ask before you sign a trenchless sewer quote
- How many pits, and where? Angi says bursting needs one at each end of the line.
- What diameter is left after lining? Angi says a liner shrinks the pipe.
- Are both camera runs in the price? Before lining and after the connections are reopened, as the Knoxville spec requires.
- What is the liner rated for? Compare the answer with the 50-year design life in the Knoxville spec.
- License number and proof of insurance. Ask for both yourself; the plumbing license table shows who licenses plumbers in six states.
Do this now: before anyone quotes a trenchless job
- Find the cleanout. HomeGuide prices a camera inspection at $125 to $500 with a cleanout and $175 to $750 when the plumber has to pull a toilet instead.
- Get the video and the footage marks. A belly or a collapse at a known distance changes the method.
- Call your sewer utility. Ask where your part of the lateral ends and whether bursting is allowed; Angi says some cities do not allow it.
- Check your policy for a service line endorsement. Look before you sign anything.
- Get two prices for the same footage. One trenchless, one dig, with restoration spelled out.
- Call the plumber line. Ask for the camera fee and a per-foot price for each method.
Full replacement prices by method and pipe age are on sewer line replacement cost. A smell rather than a backup? Start with sewer smell in the house. On septic, a septic inspection checks the tank and line together. Calls go to an independent company that serves your area and takes this kind of job; hours vary. How calls work.
Questions people ask
How much does trenchless sewer line replacement cost per foot?
Angi and Fixr put trenchless work at $50 to $250 per foot. HomeAdvisor prices cured-in-place lining at $90 to $250 per foot and pipe bursting at $60 to $200.
How much does trenchless sewer repair cost for a whole line?
HomeGuide prices a 40 foot line at $2,000 to $10,000 and an 80 foot line at $4,000 to $20,000. Angi's repair guide puts the average lining project at about $9,000.
Is pipe bursting cheaper than pipe lining?
Usually per foot: HomeAdvisor lists bursting at $60 to $200 and lining at $90 to $250. Angi's pipe bursting guide says bursting can cost up to 50% more than open excavation, so get a dig price too.
Can a bellied sewer line be fixed with trenchless methods?
No. Roto-Rooter says trenchless technology cannot be used on a bellied line; the sag has to be dug up and replaced with a new section of pipe. A camera inspection, $100 to $500 in HomeAdvisor's guide, shows whether there is a belly.
How long does a sewer pipe liner last?
The Knoxville Utilities Board's lateral liner specification uses a 50-year design life. Insituform, a liner maker, claims 50 or more years, citing a pipe it lined in 1971 that is still in use.
How long does trenchless sewer replacement take?
Angi says crews can be in and out in a few hours, and bursting can finish in hours where digging takes days or weeks. HomeGuide puts sewer line replacement in general at 1 to 5 days.
Does homeowners insurance cover trenchless sewer replacement?
Not usually in the base policy. Texas OPIC says service line coverage is an add-on that pays for repair, excavation and landscape restoration, with sample limits of $10,000 or $25,000 and a $500 deductible. Call your insurer to check yours.
Who owns the sewer lateral, the city or the homeowner?
Usually the homeowner. Pittsburgh Water says the owner is responsible for the entire lateral, and the City of San Diego says it will under no circumstances dig on private property. Ask your sewer utility where your part ends.
