Hail Damage Roof Repair Houston: $700 to $4,000 (2026)
Hail damage roof repair in Houston runs $700 to $4,000 for section repairs in Fixr's January 2026 national figures, and wind damage $250 to $6,500; no Houston price is published.
Houston's biggest recent roof storms were wind events: the National Weather Service described 100+ mph winds through the metro in the May 16, 2024 derecho and an 84 mph gust at Hobby Airport in Hurricane Beryl. A City of Houston roofing permit is required for a re-roof or overlay and takes about 10 business days.

Is it an emergency? Houston storm roof damage
- Call now: rain coming in, a sagging ceiling, an open section of roof, or a tree on the house. Angi lists water in the home and tree damage as emergencies. CenterPoint says to stay at least 35 feet from a downed line and report it at 713-207-2222.
- This week: missing shingles, lifted ridge caps, dented vents, or shingles in the yard. Call the insurer before the roofer.
- Can wait: light hail marks with no leak; Angi lists superficial hail damage among problems that can wait for a normal visit.
Hail damage roof repair in Houston is fixing shingles, flashing and vents that hail or the wind behind it broke; Fixr's January 2026 national figures put hail section repairs at $700 to $4,000 and wind damage at $250 to $6,500.
Houston's recent roof storms: the 2024 derecho and Beryl
Houston's two biggest recent roof storms were wind events, and 2024 brought both kinds. On May 16, 2024, a derecho brought what the National Weather Service office for Houston and Galveston describes as "a swath of 100+ mph winds down through the Houston Metro," with widespread damage and a couple of tornadoes.
Seven weeks later Hurricane Beryl came ashore near Matagorda at 4 a.m. on July 8, 2024, as a Category 1 storm with 80 mph sustained winds. The NWS listed preliminary gusts of 84 mph at Hobby Airport, 83 mph at Bush Intercontinental and 89 mph at the Houston University weather station.
The City of Houston's DR24 Single-Family Home Repair Program, about $50 million, repairs or rebuilds owner-occupied homes inside the city limits that the derecho, Beryl or both damaged, for households at or below 80% of area median income and outside the floodway. Housing and Community Development: (832) 394-6200.
Hail or wind? Telling the damage apart on a Houston roof
- Hail: This Old House says hail strips granules, which exposes the asphalt to sunlight, and lifts, tears or bruises shingles; it dents metal and chips tile.
- Wind: creased or missing tabs, lifted edges and torn ridge caps, often on one side of the house. Fixr prices wind or hurricane damage at $250 to $6,500.
- Both: look for dents in gutters, vents and flashing, and note the date of each storm so you can say which one did what if the insurer asks.
The median Houston home was built in 1982, the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey shows, and city planning tables count about 47% of homes built in 1979 or earlier. Ask the inspector to note the roof's age and any earlier repairs; This Old House says older roofs may be only partly covered.
Houston's residential roofing permit
Houston does require a permit for this work. The Houston Permitting Center's Residential Roofing Permit covers "a re-roof or roofing overlay for a residence structure." It goes through plan review and an inspection, and the permit and its worksheet have to be on site when the inspector comes.
- Processing: 10 business days, filed through iPermits.
- Fee: set by the City fee schedule, plus a $33.56 administrative fee.
- Valid: 6 months.
- Inspections: schedule through the IVR line at 713-222-9922; reinspection after corrections, 832-394-8840.
Plan for those 10 business days. A tarp holds the roof meanwhile; Angi says a tarp lasts safely for only about 90 days, so a permit started late can run close. Tarp costs are on emergency roof tarp.
Texas law: your roofer is not your adjuster
The Texas Department of Insurance says Texas does not allow a roofer or contractor to act as a public insurance adjuster on a claim for a property where it does or may do the work (Insurance Code 4102.163). A contractor may still give you an estimate and discuss it with your insurer or adjuster, TDI's Bulletin B-0008-24 says, but it cannot negotiate the claim for you. The same TDI page says waiving, rebating or absorbing your deductible is illegal; report a contractor who offers to the Texas Attorney General at 800-621-0508. Texas has no statewide roofing license; a 2025 Texas House bill analysis says the state "does not currently require a state-issued license for reroofing contractors," so check each company yourself. Filing a Houston storm claim
- Photograph the roof, the yard debris and any interior water before anything is moved, with dates.
- Call your insurer yourself and get a claim number. Keep a log of every call.
- Never sign an assignment of benefits or any paper that hands the claim to a contractor.
- If a roofer says it will "handle the adjuster," that is the role Texas reserves for licensed public adjusters.
No coverage is promised here; policies differ. For water already inside, see water damage restoration in Houston.
Hail and wind roof repair costs in Houston
Houston has no published hail price, so these are national figures. Fixr's January 2026 guide puts hail section repairs at about $700, rising to $4,000 for widespread damage, and wind or hurricane damage at $250 to $6,500. This Old House puts the average hail repair at $940, or $4 to $7 per square foot, with asphalt at $1.20 to $4 and flashing repairs at $150 to $1,000. Angi's emergency tarp averages $450, most jobs $150 to $3,300.
If the derecho and Beryl both hit the same roof, ask the roofer to price each storm's damage separately; it keeps two claims from blurring together. Full replacement numbers are on roof replacement cost.
