1. Heard a loud bang and the door will not lift? A torsion spring has probably broken. Leave the door closed and do not try to lift it.
2. Chamberlain says to use the opener's emergency release only when the door is fully closed if possible, never to raise or lower it, because a door with weak or broken springs can fall fast and without warning.

Springs hold hundreds of pounds of tension, HomeAdvisor says, and DASMA warns that when springs break, injury can result. Fixr says same-day service adds $100 to $300, so if the door is closed and secure, a weekday visit costs less.

Hurricane Beryl brought gusts of 83 to 89 mph to Houston airports and stations in July 2024, the National Weather Service says, and a May 2024 derecho brought gusts of roughly 70 to 90 mph. A new garage door costs $700 to $2,700 for a single door and $1,000 to $3,500 for a double, installed, HomeGuide's national figures show, with steel doors at $700 to $2,500 and wood at $1,200 to $4,000. HomeGuide puts permits at $50 to $250 where required and says wind-rated doors cost more and may be required by local codes. A new opener runs $218 to $540 installed, HomeAdvisor says.

The Houston Permitting Center lists replacing windows and exterior doors among structural repairs that need a permit, but its list does not name garage doors, so ask the installer whether your replacement needs one. The City of Houston is outside the Texas Department of Insurance windstorm catastrophe area; inside Harris County, only the parts of La Porte, Morgan's Point, Pasadena, Seabrook and Shoreacres east of State Highway 146 are in it. In that area, TWIA says garage doors are among the work that needs a windstorm certificate.

Safety check after any garage door repair

Every automatic opener made after January 1, 1993 must have entrapment protection, and the CPSC says to test it monthly by laying a 2x4 flat on the floor in the door's path: if the door does not reverse after touching it, disconnect the opener until it is repaired or replaced. 2. Ask whether the spring price covers both springs.
3. Get a written price and proof of insurance.
