Is it an emergency? Wichita hail damage
- Call now: water in the attic or coming through a ceiling, daylight through the roof boards, or a limb in the roof; Angi calls each an emergency. For a downed line, Evergy says to assume it is energized, keep at least 10 feet away and never try to move a branch touching it.
- This week: cracked shingles, dented vents and gutters, granules in the downspouts. Get the claim started, then line up an inspection.
- Can wait: surface marks with no leak, which Angi says can wait for a normal appointment.
Hail damage roof repair in Wichita is replacing shingles, metal, vents or flashing that hail broke or dented; Fixr's January 2026 national figures put section repairs at $700 to $4,000.
Wichita hailstorms: 2006 and 2026
The National Weather Service office in Wichita says the storm of April 24, 2006 crossed the metro between about 7:10 and 7:30 a.m., with the west side "bearing the brunt." Hailstones ranged from 2 to 3 inches, and property damage was estimated at $70 million.
Twenty years later, on the evening of April 25, 2026, the NWS tracked "a small but powerful storm" across the Wichita metro with quarter to golf-ball size hail. The largest estimates, 1.75 inches, came from about 3 miles south-southwest of Maize near 119th and 21st and about 3 miles west-northwest of downtown near 13th and West, and the same storm flooded Ridge Road near 29th and the westbound Kellogg ramp at Hillside.
How hail damages Wichita roofs
The median Wichita home was built in 1974, the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey shows, so half the city's homes are more than 50 years old. This Old House says hail knocks the granules off asphalt shingles and exposes the asphalt to sunlight, which breaks it down and leads to leaks; it also lifts, tears or bruises shingles and dents metal.
From the ground, start with the soft metal: gutters, downspouts and roof vents. Gutters dented by hail cost $193 to $620 to repair in This Old House's figures. Small punctures are hard to spot without getting on the roof, which is why it recommends a professional inspection, about $220 nationally.
Wichita roofing permits and MABCD licensing
Wichita and Sedgwick County share one building office, the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department. MABCD tells storm-hit residents to "verify that your roofer is registered with the State of Kansas and licensed with MABCD." Roofing permits are issued online through the MABCD Portal or in person.
MABCD's roofing fee is $0.05 per square foot, with a $50 minimum and a $1,500 maximum. By our arithmetic, a 2,000 square foot roof comes to $100. Permit help: 316-660-1840 or [email protected].
Kansas roofing registration and your deductible
Since July 1, 2013, every roofing contractor in Kansas has needed a roofing contractor registration certificate from the Kansas Attorney General to do residential or commercial roofing for pay. Check the company in the Attorney General's Roofing Registration Directory, and report an unregistered roofer on the same page or at (800) 432-2310. The Attorney General notes that registration is not an endorsement.
We did not confirm a Kansas statute that bans deductible rebates the way Texas, Colorado and Minnesota do, so treat the deductible as yours under your policy and walk away from a roofer who offers to cover it. Also know that the FTC's three-day Cooling-Off Rule does not cover emergency repairs or repairs you asked the seller to come for. Every state's storm-chaser rules are compared on storm damage contractor laws by state.
Filing a Wichita hail claim
- Photograph the roof from the ground, the gutters, vents, siding and any water inside, with dates.
- Report the loss to your insurer yourself and ask for the adjuster's name.
- Do not sign an assignment of benefits or any paper that hands the claim to the roofer.
- Check the roofer in the Kansas Attorney General's directory and with MABCD before you sign.
- Get the contract in writing, with the price, scope and start date.

Hail damage roof repair cost in Wichita
