Your deductible

You owe your insurance deductible: Texas Insurance Code 707.002 says the insured shall pay it. A contractor who waives, absorbs or rebates it commits a crime in Texas (Business and Commerce Code 27.02), and in Florida a contractor may not offer a deductible waiver or other incentive for a roof inspection or claim (Statutes 489.147). Filing a false or misleading claim is insurance fraud. Florida homeowners: 489.147 also bars contractors from paying or taking referral fees for work paid by property insurance, so call your insurer and a Florida-licensed roofing contractor directly rather than this line.

Is hail damage urgent? Warning signs to act on

  • Act today: a leak in the attic or ceiling, cracked or broken tiles or shingles with bare spots, broken skylights or windows.
  • This week: dents in gutters, downspouts, vents or the AC unit after a storm with quarter-size or larger hail. That is when hail starts to count as severe, according to NOAA's National Severe Storms Laboratory.
  • Lower urgency: no leak and no visible marks, but hail fell. Write down the storm date and have the roof checked so you know before the next storm.
  • Do not climb up. Look from the ground. A hail-hit roof can be slick with loose granules, and a fall costs far more than any repair.
Definition

Hail damage roof repair is replacing shingles, tiles or metal panels cracked, bruised or dented by hailstones; Fixr prices it at $700 to $4,000, and This Old House puts the average at $940.

Hail damage repair cost by roof material

This Old House prices hail repairs by the square foot, which is how most roofers bid them. Its June 2026 guide gives an average of $940, or $4 to $7 a square foot, with labor at $45 to $75 per hour per worker.

Roof materialRepair, per sq ftWhat hail does to it
Asphalt shingles$1.20 to $4Bruising, torn or lifted shingles, granules knocked off
Metal$1 to $5Dents; damaged flashing and joints in severe hail
Clay or concrete tile$3 to $5Chips and cracks
Wood shake$6 to $7Dents, cracks and splits

Fixr's January 2026 roof guide prices hail repair at $700 to $4,000, with about $700 for replacing damaged sections and up to $4,000 for widespread damage, especially on metal. This Old House says extensive repairs to large sections can reach $25,000 or more, and a new roof averages $10,000. For full replacement prices by material, see roof replacement cost.

How to tell if you have hail damage on your roof

IBHS, the insurance industry's research lab, says hail on asphalt shingles leaves a random pattern of impact marks, bruising you can feel as soft spots when you press the shingle, and cracks or breaks where stones struck. It says ridge caps are especially vulnerable. That inspection means standing on the roof, which is a job for the roofer or adjuster, not you.

From the ground, check the soft metals. IBHS says spatter marks or impact dents on AC units, gutters, metal flashing and downspouts are evidence that a hail event happened at your house. Roof vents and other soft metal can carry the same marks. One caution from IBHS: granule loss along shingle edges also comes from normal weathering, so granules in the gutter alone do not prove hail.

  • Dents in gutters, downspouts and the AC unit's fins.
  • Dented roof vents, chimney caps or flashing seen from the yard.
  • Fresh granules in the gutters or at the downspout outlets, alongside other signs.
  • Cracked or chipped tiles, or split wood shakes.
  • Torn-up siding or broken windows, which NSSL says wind-driven hail can cause.

What size hail damages a roof?

NOAA's National Severe Storms Laboratory calls hail quarter size, 1 inch across, or larger severe. It says hail of 1 to 1.75 inches falls at about 25 to 40 mph, hail of 2 to 4 inches at 44 to 72 mph, and stones over 4 inches can fall at more than 100 mph. The largest hailstone recovered in the U.S. fell in Vivian, South Dakota, on June 23, 2010: 8 inches across and 1 pound 15 ounces. NSSL says a ruler, calipers or tape measure beat comparisons to coins and balls, which are estimates.

Impact-resistant shingles: what UL 2218 Class 4 means

UL 2218 is the impact test most shingles are sold under. UL Solutions says it produces four ratings, Class 1 through Class 4, by dropping steel balls from various heights to replicate the impact energy of natural hailstones, and that the pass or fail call is based on breaks visible from the back of the shingle. Class 4 is the top rating. Because UL 2218 does not grade dents or granule loss on the face, IBHS runs its own hail tests on shingles it buys off the market every two years and rates them; it suggests choosing shingles rated Good or Excellent. IBHS's FORTIFIED program says shingles that qualify for its optional Hail Supplement, which must be rated Good or Excellent, better protect a home from hail up to 2 inches in diameter.

Insurance discounts exist, but the amounts are set by insurers. The Texas Department of Insurance says the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association gives credits for impact-resistant roofing, that a Class 4 roof covering gets the highest credit, and that other insurers set any discount company by company. For a TWIA credit, the installer completes TDI form PC068, and other insurers may use that form or their own. Minnesota Statutes 65A.298, added in 2023, requires insurers to give a premium discount for homes built or retrofitted to IBHS FORTIFIED standards with the hail supplement, once you submit the IBHS certificate. Ask your insurer for its discount before you choose shingles.

Hail damage insurance claims: deductibles, supplements and old roofs

Wind and hail are the most common homeowners claims: the Insurance Information Institute says 2.8% of insured homes had a wind or hail loss in 2018 to 2022, the largest share of any cause. Using ISO data, it says wind and hail made up 42.5% of homeowners losses in 2023, and the average wind and hail claim over 2019 to 2023 was $14,747. Four rules from regulators and guides:

  • Your deductible comes first. The Colorado Division of Insurance says wind and hail deductibles may be a percentage of coverage, such as 1%, 2% or 5%, and that if the estimate is below the deductible the insurer will not pay. This Old House gives 1% to 5% of dwelling coverage as typical.
  • The first estimate is not always the last. Colorado's DOI says the first repair estimate is not always the final one; the insurer reviews further costs and issues a supplement if approved.
  • Older roofs may be paid at less. This Old House says coverage for older roofs may only partly cover repair costs. Check whether your policy pays replacement cost or actual cash value on the roof.
  • No deductible deals. Texas Insurance Code 707.002 says the insured shall pay any deductible, and 707.004 lets the insurer hold back recoverable depreciation until you show you paid it. Texas Business and Commerce Code 27.02 makes it a crime for a seller to waive, absorb or rebate it, and Colorado's C.R.S. 6-22-105 bars a roofer on an insured job from promising to pay, waive or rebate it. Other states are on storm damage contractor laws by state.

Other hail damage repair costs: gutters, siding and water

Hail rarely stops at the roof. This Old House lists gutter repairs at $193 to $620, flashing at $150 to $1,000, water damage at $400 to $1,700 and mold remediation at $1,127 to $3,441 as related costs. Fixr prices hail damage to siding at $300 to $1,000. Wind and hail siding repairs are broken out in storm damage roof and siding repair, and gutter repair covers gutters on their own.

Hail storm chasers and the free roof inspection

Hail draws door knockers because the damage is hard for owners to see. IBHS advises avoiding unsolicited offers to inspect or repair your roof, and says to call your insurance agent first to report suspected hail damage. Georgia's Attorney General has warned of roofers who caused damage themselves during a so-called free inspection. The Colorado Division of Insurance tells hail victims to be careful with anyone who contacts them door to door or by phone, to get everything in writing and to read contracts carefully. Never sign an assignment of benefits, and do not let a roofer talk to your insurer in your place.

Questions to ask before a hail repair

  • Can you show me photos of the hail marks and the dented metal you are basing the estimate on?
  • Which UL 2218 class and IBHS rating are the replacement shingles?
  • Will you fill out my insurer's impact-resistant roofing form after the job (in Texas, TDI form PC068)?
  • How will you handle a supplement if you find more damage once shingles come off?
  • What is your license number where my state licenses roofers, and can I see proof of insurance?

After a hailstorm: what to do now

  1. Write down the date and time of the storm and measure a hailstone with a ruler if any are left.
  2. Photograph dents on gutters, downspouts, vents, the AC unit and cars from the ground.
  3. Check the attic and ceilings for leaks; tarp any opening and keep the receipt. See emergency roof tarp prices.
  4. Call your insurer to report suspected hail damage before you sign with any roofer.
  5. Get a roofer's written estimate and be there when the adjuster inspects.
  6. Compare the adjuster's scope with the estimate before work starts.

Questions people ask

How much does hail damage roof repair cost?

Fixr prices hail damage roof repair at $700 to $4,000 (January 2026). This Old House puts the average at $940, or $4 to $7 per square foot, and says extensive repairs to large sections can cost $25,000 or more (June 2026).

What is the hail damage repair cost for the whole house?

Fixr's storm guide prices all hail damage repairs at $3,000 to $12,000 (January 2025). HomeAdvisor's storm and hail page gives a normal range of $2,632 to $22,127 with an average of $12,300 (June 2026); it does not say which jobs that range covers.

How do I know if hail damaged my roof?

IBHS says hail leaves a random pattern of impact marks, soft bruised spots and cracks on shingles, and that dents or spatter marks on gutters, downspouts, flashing and AC units show a hail event happened. Check from the ground and let a roofer or adjuster go on the roof.

What size hail damages a roof?

NOAA's National Severe Storms Laboratory considers hail 1 inch across, quarter size, or larger severe. Hail of 1 to 1.75 inches falls at about 25 to 40 mph, and 2 to 4 inch hail at 44 to 72 mph.

What is a Class 4 shingle?

Class 4 is the highest of four UL 2218 impact ratings, which UL Solutions says come from dropping steel balls from set heights to mimic hailstones. IBHS's FORTIFIED program says shingles that meet its Hail Supplement better protect against hail up to 2 inches in diameter.

Do Class 4 shingles lower insurance premiums?

Often, but insurers set the amount. The Texas Department of Insurance says TWIA gives its highest credit to Class 4 roofs and other insurers set discounts company by company. Minnesota Statutes 65A.298 requires a discount for homes certified to IBHS FORTIFIED standards with the hail supplement.

Is hail damage covered by homeowners insurance?

Usually, minus your deductible. The Colorado Division of Insurance says wind and hail deductibles may be 1%, 2% or 5% of coverage, and that no payment is issued if the estimate is below the deductible. The Insurance Information Institute puts the average 2019 to 2023 wind and hail claim at $14,747.
