Your deductible

You owe your insurance deductible: Texas Insurance Code 707.002 says the insured shall pay it. A contractor who waives, absorbs or rebates it commits a crime in Texas (Business and Commerce Code 27.02), and in Florida a contractor may not offer a deductible waiver or other incentive for a roof inspection or claim (Statutes 489.147). Filing a false or misleading claim is insurance fraud. Florida homeowners: 489.147 also bars contractors from paying or taking referral fees for work paid by property insurance, so call your insurer and a Florida-licensed roofing contractor directly rather than this line.

When do you need an emergency roof tarp?

  • Tonight: you can see daylight or sky through the roof, a limb punched a hole, a section of shingles and underlayment is gone, or water is running into the house.
  • Before the next rain: missing shingles over bare underlayment, a lifted ridge, or flashing pulled loose at a chimney.
  • Probably no tarp needed: dents and hail marks with no breaks, or a few missing tabs with the underlayment intact. Photograph it and book a regular inspection.
  • Safety first: the CDC says stay clear of fallen power lines and do not enter a damaged building until local authorities say it is safe. If a tree is still on the roof, the tree comes off before the tarp goes on.
Definition

An emergency roof tarp is a heavy plastic sheet fastened over a damaged roof to keep rain out until the permanent repair; HomeAdvisor puts the average at $450 and says a properly installed tarp works for up to 90 days.

Roof tarp cost by size of the damaged area

Tarping is priced by the area covered. HomeAdvisor's June 2026 guide splits it into materials at about $0.10 to $0.30 a square foot and labor at $0.60 to $2.50, with crews billing $45 to $75 an hour and most homes taking 2 to 4 hours. Its table by area:

Area coveredHomeAdvisor price range
35 sq ft$100 to $150
120 sq ft$200 to $340
192 sq ft$225 to $540
600 sq ft$420 to $1,700
1,200 sq ft$840 to $3,360
1,500 sq ft$1,050 to $4,200
3,000 sq ft$2,100 to $8,400

HomeAdvisor, roof tarping cost by area, June 2026. HomeAdvisor's FAQ gives a lower standard price for 1,500 sq ft ($1,050 to $3,000); we show its table.

A tarp over a single hole from a limb sits at the top of that table. A whole slope stripped by wind sits near the bottom. Measure, or have the crew measure, before you agree to a price; HomeAdvisor says roofers add about 10% to the area for overlap and anchoring at the edges.

What makes a roof tarp cost more

  • Timing. HomeAdvisor says emergency tarping costs 50% to 100% more than a scheduled visit and that after-hours labor runs 1.5 to 2 times the standard rate. Scheduling ahead can save around $500, it says.
  • Tarp weight. Tarps run 10 to 25 mils thick. HomeAdvisor says 10 to 15 mils suits short, mild-weather use and 15 to 25 mils suits severe weather or a repair that will be delayed.
  • Pitch and shape. HomeAdvisor says steep slopes, dormers and bump-outs take more material and care, and may need special equipment.
  • Fastening. Cap nails, wooden battens and waterproof tape are the usual hardware.
  • Credits. Ask whether the tarp price is credited toward the permanent repair if you hire the same company.

Three cost guides on roof tarping. Figures as published; not averaged.

How long does a roof tarp last?

Treat a tarp as a 90-day fix at most. HomeAdvisor says a properly installed tarp is effective for up to 90 days and that sun, wind and rain wear it out sooner where weather is severe. Angi's figure is the same 90 days, while HomeGuide's range for a temporary tarp is 60 to 90 days. Check it after every storm, look for flapping edges and pooled water, and have it re-secured if the battens loosen. Book the permanent repair while the tarp is new; the costs are on storm damage roof repair for wind and hail damage roof repair for hail.

Does insurance pay for a roof tarp? The duty to mitigate

Most policies expect you to stop further damage, and most pay for the tarp when the damage itself is covered. The Texas Department of Insurance tells policyholders to do what they need to keep damage from getting worse, like covering it with a tarp or making temporary repairs, and to keep receipts for all expenses. The Colorado Division of Insurance lists tarps on roofs and boarding windows as steps to take after hail. The Insurance Information Institute says to take reasonable steps to protect the property and save receipts, and that temporary repair payments count toward the total settlement. HomeAdvisor says insurers treat tarping as mitigation and that your deductible applies.

Two cautions. Photograph the damage before the tarp covers it, because the adjuster may not see it otherwise. And a tarp is not a permanent repair: the III says not to make extensive permanent repairs until the adjuster has assessed the damage. The full claim process is on storm damage restoration.

FEMA's Operation Blue Roof: free tarps after declared disasters

After some major hurricanes and storms, the federal government installs tarps for free. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says Operation Blue Roof is a priority mission it manages for FEMA, and it starts only when FEMA assigns the mission to the Corps at the request of the affected state. When it runs, the Corps lists these rules:

  • The home must be your primary residence; renters with legal permission to stay can apply.
  • No more than 50% of the roof framing can be damaged.
  • Contractors cannot cover slate, asbestos or clay tile roofs; metal roofs and mobile homes are decided case by case.
  • There is no cost to the homeowner.
  • You sign a Right of Entry form that lets Corps workers onto the property.

When we checked in October 2026 the Corps listed no active Blue Roof mission. If one opens after a storm in your area, the Corps posts sign-up locations on its Blue Roof page, and you can still hire a roofer in the meantime if rain is coming in. The same page lists the FEMA Disaster Fraud Hotline, 1-866-720-5721. Because the program is free, anyone asking to be paid for a Blue Roof tarp is a red flag.

Should you tarp the roof yourself?

The cost guides say no. HomeAdvisor warns of significant fall risks and says a badly installed tarp can cause more damage, and Angi says repairing a roof is not a safe do-it-yourself job. A wet, storm-damaged roof is the worst version of that job. Until a crew arrives, work from inside: buckets under the drips, belongings moved away, and nobody in rooms where the ceiling sags.

What a good tarp job looks like

  • Angi says a good tarp is pulled tight and runs over the ridge or tucks under the roofing above the opening, so water sheds across it.
  • Edges are fastened with cap nails, wooden battens or waterproof tape, the hardware HomeAdvisor lists.
  • It extends well past the damage on every side.
  • The crew sends you photos of the damage before and the tarp after, which you forward to the adjuster.
  • The invoice shows the area covered, the price and the date, as a separate line from any permanent repair.

Questions to ask on the phone: is the tarp priced per square foot or flat, is there an after-hours charge, is the tarp credited toward the repair, and when can someone come back to quote the permanent fix. Same-day roof calls without a tarp are covered on emergency roof repair.

Need the roof covered before the next rain? Call the storm damage line and ask how the tarp is priced and whether there is an after-hours fee.

Roof open to the rain? Do this now

  1. Get everyone away from sagging ceilings and from any water near outlets or the electrical panel.
  2. Stay off the roof and away from fallen lines; report lines to the electric company.
  3. Photograph the damage from the ground and inside before anything is covered.
  4. Catch water with buckets and move furniture and electronics out of the way.
  5. Call your insurer, get a claim number and ask what it needs for the tarp bill.
  6. Have the tarp installed, keep the invoice, and book the permanent repair inside 90 days. If water got into ceilings or walls, see water damage restoration.
