Storm Damage Roof Repair: $250 to $6,500 for Wind (Fixr)
Storm damage roof repair costs $250 to $6,500 for wind damage in Fixr's January 2026 roof repair guide.
Small jobs are far cheaper: HomeGuide puts replacing and sealing up to 25 shingles at $100 to $300, while repairs that reach the decking or framing run $3,000 or more. Storm-damaged siding adds $300 to $2,000 in Fixr's storm guide.

You owe your insurance deductible: Texas Insurance Code 707.002 says the insured shall pay it. A contractor who waives, absorbs or rebates it commits a crime in Texas (Business and Commerce Code 27.02), and in Florida a contractor may not offer a deductible waiver or other incentive for a roof inspection or claim (Statutes 489.147). Filing a false or misleading claim is insurance fraud. Florida homeowners: 489.147 also bars contractors from paying or taking referral fees for work paid by property insurance, so call your insurer and a Florida-licensed roofing contractor directly rather than this line.

When is wind damage to a roof an emergency?
- Emergency: bare wood or holes showing, water coming through a ceiling, a limb through the roof, or a ridge or edge section peeled back. Rain on an open deck pours in fast: IBHS says every inch of rain on an exposed deck can let in the equivalent of nine bathtubs of water.
- Within a few days: a handful of missing or creased shingles with no leak yet, lifted ridge caps, loose flashing.
- Can wait for a normal appointment: shingle granules in the gutters with no missing shingles, or a dented vent cap. Photograph it and tell your insurer anyway.
- Stay on the ground. Do not climb onto a wind-damaged roof. Shingles and decking may be loose, and lines may be down nearby; the CDC says to stay clear of fallen power lines and report them to the electric company.
Storm damage roof repair is fixing shingles, flashing, decking and edges torn up by wind, hail or debris; Fixr prices wind damage to a roof at $250 to $6,500 in its January 2026 roof repair guide.
Wind damage roof repair cost
Wind damage roof repair has the widest range of any storm repair because it can mean three loose shingles or a stripped roof. Fixr's January 2026 roof repair guide prices wind or hurricane damage at $250 to $6,500, with the top tied to widespread damage after a hurricane or tropical storm. Fixr's older storm guide gives $2,000 to $8,000 for wind damage to a roof. For small jobs, HomeGuide puts the price at $100 to $300 to replace and seal up to 25 shingles and $350 to $1,000 per 100 square feet to re-shingle a section, and HomeAdvisor says replacing a few broken shingles can cost as little as $150.
Expect more when the decking or framing is involved. HomeGuide says a repair with underlying structural damage runs $3,000 or more, and Fixr adds $100 to $300 for same-day or next-day service. A roof inspection averages $250 in Fixr's guide, and HomeGuide puts roof inspections at $100 to $400; see roof inspection for what one covers.
How strong does wind have to be to damage a roof?
NOAA's National Severe Storms Laboratory classifies damaging thunderstorm winds as those over 50 to 60 mph and says straight-line winds can reach 100 mph along a path hundreds of miles long. IBHS, the insurance industry's research lab, says roof damage often begins when wind gets under the roof edge and starts ripping it away. Once the covering is gone, the wood deck is exposed and water passes through the gaps between boards. That is why the roof edge is one of the first places to check, and why a small lifted edge left alone can turn into a large repair in the next storm.
Mobile homes are more exposed. NSSL says even anchored mobile homes can be seriously damaged when gusts top 80 mph; mobile home roof repair covers those roofs.
Signs of wind damage you can check from the ground
- Shingles, tabs or ridge caps in the yard or gutters.
- Dark patches on the roof where shingles are gone, or bare wood showing.
- Shingles lifted, creased or folded back, often along the edges and ridge.
- Loose or bent flashing at chimneys, walls and vents.
- Gutters pulled away from the fascia or downspouts knocked loose.
- New water stains on ceilings or in the attic after the storm.
Use binoculars or take zoomed photos from the yard. If you see hail marks rather than missing pieces, the hail damage roof repair guide explains what to look for. If water is already inside, roof leak repair and ceiling water damage repair cover the interior side.
Repair or replace a storm-damaged roof?
HomeGuide suggests replacement may make more sense when a repair estimate passes $3,000 or the damage covers more than 25% of the roof. Age matters too: a patch on an old roof often fails at the seams around it. If the insurer is paying, the adjuster decides how much of the roof the claim covers, so get the adjuster's scope in writing before you agree to a full tear-off. Full replacement prices by material are on roof replacement cost.
Rebuild stronger: FORTIFIED roof upgrades
If a section or the whole roof is being redone, IBHS's FORTIFIED Roof standard lists upgrades aimed at wind: a sealed roof deck, ring-shank nails in an enhanced pattern, a wider drip edge and a fully adhered starter strip. IBHS says sealing the deck seams can cut water intrusion by up to 95% and that ring-shank nails nearly double the roof's strength against wind. Ask your roofer to price these as separate line items so you can see what each adds.
Storm damage siding repair
Siding takes the side-on hits: wind-driven hail, flying debris and panels peeled off by gusts. NSSL notes that wind-driven hail can tear up siding and break windows. Fixr prices hail damage to siding at $300 to $1,000 and wind damage at $800 to $2,000, and HomeAdvisor's storm page puts the average siding repair at about $910.

Matching is the catch. New panels may not match a faded wall, so ask the roofer and the adjuster how a mismatch will be handled before work starts. HomeAdvisor suggests replacing rather than repairing once repairs pass $2,000 or half the price of new siding. More on materials and prices: siding repair.
Gutters, windows and other outside damage
Fixr's storm guide prices storm-damaged gutters at $175 to $550 and windows at $175 to $700, and HomeAdvisor's storm page puts broken window glass at $100 to $650. Bent gutters can push roof runoff against the foundation, so they are worth fixing before the next heavy rain; see gutter repair. Broken windows can be boarded the same day and replaced later through window replacement.
Wind deductibles and who pays on a roof claim
Read the declarations page for a separate wind or wind-and-hail deductible. The Insurance Information Institute says windstorm deductibles apply to any kind of wind damage, unlike hurricane deductibles, and the Colorado Division of Insurance says wind and hail deductibles may be a percentage of coverage, such as 1%, 2% or 5%. Whatever it is, you pay it. New York General Business Law 771-B and Missouri law (RSMo 407.725) both bar a roofing contractor from promising to pay or rebate any part of the deductible and from negotiating the claim for you; other states are in the storm damage contractor laws by state table. Never sign an assignment of benefits. The full claims walkthrough is on the storm damage restoration page.
Questions to ask a roofer after a storm
- Will you show me photos of every damaged area, including the edges and ridge?
- Is this a repair or a replacement, and why?
- Will the new shingles match, and what happens if they do not?
- Can you price the tarp and the permanent repair as separate line items?
- What is your license number? (Check it in our roofing license by state table.)
- Does the contract mention my deductible, an assignment of benefits or a direction to pay?

- Put buckets under drips and move belongings away from wet ceilings.
- Call your insurer, get a claim number and ask about a wind or hurricane deductible.
- Have openings tarped; prices are on the emergency roof tarp page. Keep the receipt.
