When to call: Oklahoma City hail damage that is urgent

  • Call now: water through the ceiling or in the attic, a skylight broken out, light through the decking, or a tree on the roof. Angi calls each of these an emergency. If a line is down, stay well away and call 911.
  • This week: broken or bruised shingles, dented vents and gutters, or granules collecting at the downspouts. Report them to your insurer before anyone climbs up.
  • Can wait: cosmetic marks on a roof that is not leaking, which Angi says can wait for a normal appointment.

Hail damage roof repair in Oklahoma City is replacing shingles, metal panels, vents or the whole roof covering after hail breaks or bruises them; Fixr's January 2026 national figures put section repairs at $700 to $4,000.

Oklahoma City hail on record: May 16, 2010

The National Weather Service office in Norman says the May 16, 2010 storm moved through "the heart of the Oklahoma City metro area" with embedded areas of larger than baseball size hail. The largest stones reported were an estimated 4.25 inches, one of them 5 miles northwest of Oklahoma City. The NWS storm reports list hail that "busted out street lights near Remington Park," six damaged cars at NW 63rd and Portland, and golf-ball hail at 164th Street and Meridian Avenue, with damage "well into the millions."

Stones that size can tear shingles and dent metal roofing and vents. The median Oklahoma City home was built in 1982, the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey shows, so ask the inspector to note the roof's age. This Old House recommends a professional inspection, about $220 nationally, because small punctures are hard to spot from the ground.

What hail does to an Oklahoma City roof

  • Asphalt shingles: This Old House says hail knocks off the granules, leaving the asphalt to break down in the sun, and lifts, tears or bruises shingles.
  • Metal: dents are common; This Old House notes they do not always need repair.
  • Gutters and vents: dented soft metal is the easiest sign to see from the ground. This Old House puts gutter repair after hail at $193 to $620.

Oklahoma City's roofing permit, new since 2025

Oklahoma City now requires a roofing permit. The City Council adopted the ordinance on June 17, 2025, and the city's April 2026 notice says a permit is needed for significant roof removal, repair or replacement on single-family homes and duplexes inside city limits. Maintenance on 500 square feet or less, and new homes, are exempt.

  • Fee: $94.50, typically issued the same day.
  • Who applies: residents and contractors can both apply, online at okc.gov/access or at the Business Center, 420 W. Main St.
  • Inspection: when the work is done, upload photos to the city website and request an inspection online, by text or through the automated phone line. Inspectors check roof condition, flashing, drainage, installation and code compliance.
  • Questions: Development Center, (405) 297-2525.

Ask your roofer for the permit number before the old roof comes off. A 500 square foot repair is five roof squares, so a hail job bigger than a patch can cross the line.

Oklahoma roofer registration and the deductible

Oklahoma's 2010 Roofing Contractor Registration Act requires roofers to register with the Construction Industries Board, and the Oklahoma Senate says registration takes proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage. The CIB's own requirements say residential roofers must carry at least $500,000 in general liability insurance to register. Look the company up on the CIB roofing search before you sign.

Oklahoma law is specific on the deductible. Under 59 O.S. 1151.30, a roofing contractor doing insurance-paid work may not, as an inducement, "advertise or promise to pay, directly or indirectly, all or part of any applicable insurance deductible," and the insurer is not obligated to consider that contractor's estimate. In an April 2026 release after spring storms, the Oklahoma Senate warned: "Don't trust contractors who offer to waive your deductible or promise a rebate, both of which are against the law." It also says never to pay in advance and not to make the final payment until the job is done. Other states' rules are on storm damage contractor laws by state.

Strengthen Oklahoma Homes: up to $10,000 toward a stronger roof

If the hail claim means a new roof anyway, the Oklahoma Insurance Department's Strengthen Oklahoma Homes grant covers up to $10,000 of the cost of building it to the FORTIFIED Home Roof High Wind standard with the Hail Supplement, an IBHS program that goes beyond the building code. The grant is paid to the contractor, not to you, and you pay anything above it.

  • Who qualifies: Oklahomans whose primary residence it is, with homeowners insurance that includes wind coverage (and flood insurance in a special flood hazard area). Condos, duplexes and manufactured or mobile homes are excluded.
  • How: apply when the grant portal opens, pick an approved evaluator, then get bids from three approved contractors before work starts. The Senate notes the contractor must be FORTIFIED certified.
  • Premiums: the Department says FORTIFIED homes in Oklahoma receive discounts on the wind portion of the premium; the amount varies by carrier.
  • Contact: 844-323-9657.

Filing an Oklahoma City hail claim

  1. Photograph the roof from the ground, the gutters and vents, and any water inside, before you clean up.
  2. Call the insurer yourself; the claim is yours, not the roofer's.
  3. Do not sign an assignment of benefits or any paper that hands your claim to the roofer.
  4. Pay your own deductible. A roofer offering to cover it is offering something Oklahoma law forbids.
  5. Ask the insurer, before the roof is ordered, whether a FORTIFIED upgrade changes your premium.

Hail damage roof repair cost in Oklahoma City

No Oklahoma City price is published, so these are national figures. Fixr's January 2026 guide puts hail section repairs at about $700, rising to $4,000 for widespread damage. This Old House puts the typical hail repair at $940 on average, $4 to $7 a square foot, with asphalt at $1.20 to $4 and metal at $1 to $5. A new roof runs about $10,000 in This Old House's figures; add the $94.50 city permit to any job over 500 square feet.

This Old House says deductibles often run 1% to 5% of dwelling coverage, so a small repair may cost less than the deductible. Get the inspection first, then decide whether to file. Replacement pricing is on roof replacement cost.
