Emergency Roof Repair Houston: Tarps $150 to $3,300 + Permit
Emergency roof tarping in Houston costs $150 to $3,300, with most jobs around $450, according to Angi's 2026 national figures, and an emergency visit adds $100 to $300 or more to the repair price.
A full re-roof in Houston needs a City permit that takes 10 business days to process, so the first job after a storm is stopping the water.

If you plan to file an insurance claim, call your insurer first. The roof line connects you with a company for work you pay for directly; it does not handle insurance claims.
Do this now: roof leaking in a Houston storm
- Get people out from under any ceiling that sags or bulges. The Red Cross warns that a sagging ceiling is likely waterlogged and dangerous.
- Move valuables and electronics, and catch drips with buckets or towels.
- Water near light fixtures or outlets? Turn off power at the breaker only if you can reach the panel from a dry spot.
- Downed power line or tree on wires? Stay at least 35 feet away and call CenterPoint at 713-207-2222.
- Stay off the roof and off ladders in wind and rain. More than 500,000 people a year are treated and about 300 die from ladder injuries in the U.S., CDC NIOSH says.
- Photograph the ceiling, attic and any debris from the ground before anything is moved.
Emergency roof repair in Houston is a same-day or next-day visit to stop an active leak, usually with a tarp, followed by a permanent repair. Angi puts emergency tarping at $150 to $3,300, with most jobs around $450.
Is it an emergency? Leaks that cannot wait
An active leak into living space, a ceiling that is bulging, or a storm that tore shingles or decking off is an emergency. A stain that is not growing can wait for a regular appointment, which costs less: Angi and Fixr both put the emergency premium at $100 to $300 on top of the repair. If water has already soaked drywall or insulation, see ceiling water damage repair and water damage restoration in Houston, since the EPA says wet materials should be dried within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold.
Houston storms that tear roofs open
Hurricane Beryl came ashore near Matagorda at 4 a.m. on July 8, 2024 as a Category 1, with peak gusts of 84 mph at Hobby Airport, 83 mph at Bush Intercontinental and 89 mph at the Houston University station, the National Weather Service says. Less than two months earlier, a derecho on May 16, 2024 brought most of the Houston area gusts of roughly 70 to 90 mph. Texas also recorded 878 hail events in 2024, more than any other state, Insurance Journal reported.

Tarp now, permit later: Houston's re-roof rules
The City of Houston requires a Residential Roofing Permit for a re-roof or roofing overlay on a home, with plan review and inspection, a $33.56 admin fee on top of the fee schedule, 10 business days of processing and a 6-month validity; the permit has to stay on site until final approval. A tarp is a temporary fix, so ask the roofer whether the permanent job will be a repair or a re-roof, and who pulls the permit if one is needed.
Prices for the permanent job are on roof repair in Houston. If the storm damage is bad enough for a new roof, see roof replacement cost. TDI says insurers that offer impact-resistant roof discounts give Class 4 roofs the highest credit.
Paying for it: insurance and Houston repair programs
Storm damage may be an insurance claim. If you plan to file one, call your insurer before signing anything with a roofer, and keep photos and receipts for the tarp. The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule does not cover emergency repairs you asked a company to come out for, so read any contract before you sign it on the spot.
The City of Houston's DR24 program has about $50 million to repair or rebuild owner-occupied homes damaged by the 2024 derecho or Hurricane Beryl, for households at or below 80% of area median income in city limits and outside the floodway. Application packets have been available by phone since Aug 24, 2026 at (832) 394-6200.
