Is it urgent? When Austin hail damage needs a roofer today

  • Call now: rain getting into the attic or through a light fixture, daylight through the decking, a broken skylight, or a limb in the roof. Angi lists water in the attic or home and tree damage as emergencies. Report a downed line to Austin Energy at 512-322-9100 and keep clear of it.
  • In the next few days: missing shingle tabs, cracked tile, dented vents or a gutter full of granules. Book an inspection after you have called your insurer.
  • Can wait: cosmetic marks with no leak. Angi says superficial hail damage can wait for a regular appointment.

Austin hailstorms on record

Central Austin and the northeast side were in the path on March 25, 2021. The National Weather Service office for Austin and San Antonio says a storm in the early morning hours dropped "a swath of quarter to up to lime sized hail through central and northeast Austin," one round of a March 22 to 25 outbreak that also brought an EF-1 tornado to Canyon Lake.

Twelve years earlier, on March 25, 2009, storms crossed Williamson, Travis, Lee, Hays, Bastrop and Fayette counties. The NWS summary says "in Travis County the public reported hail sizes as large as 2 to 3 inches," and the public reported damage to cars, power lines and some roofs. Spring is the season to watch: both storms came in late March.

Austin's newer roofs and what hail does to them

Austin's housing is young for a big city. The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey puts the median year built at 1994, and 43.3% of the city's homes went up in 2000 or later. A newer roof is not hail-proof, though. This Old House says hail knocks granules off asphalt shingles and exposes the asphalt to sunlight, lifts, tears or bruises shingles, dents metal and cracks clay and concrete tile, and that small punctures are hard for most owners to see.

Angi's Austin replacement guide adds that hidden damage is more likely here because of supercell thunderstorms, nearby tornado activity and fairly high rainfall. Check from the ground: dented turbine vents, dinged gutters and chipped paint on the fascia. Then get a professional inspection, about $220 nationally in This Old House's figures, before you agree to any scope.

Does Austin require a permit to reroof after hail?

Often not. The City of Austin's list of residential work exempt from a building permit includes "asphalt shingles that replace existing asphalt shingles" and "replacement of any roof covering that does not adversely affect the roof structure." Replacing up to 128 square feet of roof decking is exempt too.

There is a catch for homes in the Wildland-Urban Interface, the city's wildfire-risk zone. Both roofing exemptions stop applying when "the property is located in the Wildland-Urban Interface area and 50% or more of the roofing is being replaced." Angi's Austin guide also lists a $333 flat re-roof permit including inspection; the city's own exemption list and Angi's figure do not agree, so ask Austin Development Services which applies to your address before the crew starts.

Texas rules for an Austin hail claim

Texas does not license roofers statewide: a 2025 Texas House committee analysis of a reroofing licensing bill (H.B. 3344, which died in the House) says "Texas does not currently require a state-issued license for reroofing contractors." The paper trail is your protection; states are compared on roofing license by state. The Texas Department of Insurance says it is illegal for a contractor to offer to waive, rebate or absorb your deductible (Business and Commerce Code 27.02). Any roofing contract of $1,000 or more that involves an insurance settlement must carry a notice that you, the policyholder, have to pay the deductible. Violations go to the Texas Attorney General at 800-621-0508; the state comparison is on storm damage contractor laws by state.

How to file an Austin hail claim without giving it away

  • Photos come first: the roof from the yard, the dented vents and gutters, hail on the ground beside a coin, and any ceiling stain, all before cleanup.
  • You call the insurer: a contractor can give an estimate, but the claim is yours. Do not sign an assignment of benefits or any form that hands it over.
  • Keep the deductible: a roofer offering to "take care of" it is offering something Texas law bans.
  • Read before signing: look for the deductible notice on any contract of $1,000 or more.

Coverage depends on your policy and nothing here promises payment. For the basics, see does homeowners insurance cover home repairs.
