Roof Repair Houston: $395 to $1,968 + City Permit (2026)
Roof repair in Houston runs about $1,174 on average, using Angi and HomeAdvisor's 2026 national figure, since no Houston-only price is published; most homeowners pay $395 to $1,968.
A re-roof or overlay needs a City of Houston Residential Roofing Permit, which takes about 10 business days. A third-party licensing guide says Texas has no statewide roofing license. To reach a local roofing company, call the roof line and describe the roof and the damage.

Roof repair in Houston is fixing the part of a roof that failed, such as wind-lifted shingles, loose flashing or a split vent boot, without replacing the whole covering. Angi and HomeAdvisor put the 2026 national average at $1,174, and a full re-roof inside the city needs a Residential Roofing Permit.

Do this now: a roof leak or storm damage in Houston
Call 911 first for fire, smoke or sparks, then stay off the roof and protect the rooms below; Angi puts a professional emergency tarp at about $450 in 2026.
- Fire, smoke or sparks: get everyone out and call 911.
- A downed line: stay at least 35 feet away and call CenterPoint Energy at 713-207-2222.
- Water near outlets or light fixtures: shut off power at the breaker only if you can reach the panel from a dry spot.
- Stay off the roof. OSHA warns that roof surfaces can be steep and slippery and says a damp roof or tarp should dry before anyone walks on it. Put up a tarp only from the ground, or have a roofer do it; never climb onto a wet or icy roof.
- Photograph the damage from the ground and inside, and keep every receipt.
- Call the roof line with the roof material, its rough age and where the water shows up, and ask the Houston company for its visit fee first.
Is it urgent? When a Houston roof needs a roofer today
A Houston roof needs a roofer today when water is reaching the attic or the rooms below, a ceiling stain keeps growing, or a storm or tree opened the roof; Angi says emergency service adds $100 to $300 or more to the repair.
Moss, algae, light hail marks or minor flashing damage that is not leaking can wait for a regular visit, Angi says, and booking ahead skips the emergency fee. Houston's worst roof days come with hurricanes and derechos; Beryl gusted to 84 mph at Hobby Airport in July 2024.

Shingles in the yard or a new stain on the ceiling? Call the roof line, describe what you see, and ask the Houston company for its visit fee before it books.
The low end of that range is one item: a patch of lifted shingles, a loose strip of flashing, a cracked pipe boot. The high end is a leak that ran long enough to soak the decking. Fixr puts labor at about 60% of a leak repair. The roof leak repair guide explains how roofers trace the water back to where it enters.
When a Houston roof job needs a city permit
The City of Houston requires a Residential Roofing Permit for a re-roof or a roofing overlay on a house. The Houston Permitting Center lists plan review and an inspection on every one, a fee from the city schedule plus a $33.56 admin fee, and about 10 business days to process. The permit is valid for 6 months and has to stay on site until the final inspection passes. Applications go through iPermits.
The city page is silent on small repairs. Before a roofer swaps a few shingles or a pipe boot, ask whether the job needs a permit. If the repair grows into a re-roof, ask who files the permit and how the 10-day processing time affects the start date.
Houston storms: Beryl and the 2024 derecho
Houston roofs take wind from hurricanes and from severe storms. Hurricane Beryl came ashore near Matagorda at 4 a.m. on July 8, 2024, as a Category 1, and the National Weather Service logged gusts of 84 mph at Hobby Airport and 83 mph at Bush Intercontinental. Two months earlier, on May 16, 2024, a derecho crossed the city with most gusts around 70 to 90 mph, according to KPRC.
After a storm, check from the ground and from inside the house. Look for shingles in the yard, flashing hanging at a chimney or wall, and new stains on the ceiling. Then:
- Fire, smoke, sparks or a burning smell: get everyone out and call 911.
- A downed line: stay at least 35 feet away and call CenterPoint at 713-207-2222, as CenterPoint's storm page advises.
- Water near outlets or light fixtures: shut off power at the breaker only if you can reach the panel from a dry spot.
- Stay off the roof. A wet, storm-damaged roof is no place for a ladder; let the roofer judge it.
- Water already through the ceiling: see water damage restoration in Houston and the emergency roof repair and tarp guide.
The roof line is for roof work you pay for yourself. If you plan to file an insurance or storm claim, call your insurer first and follow its process. In Texas, a roofer may not waive or rebate your deductible.
Impact-resistant shingles and Texas insurance credits
If hail is the reason you are replacing shingles, ask your insurer about an impact-resistant credit before you choose the product. The Texas Department of Insurance says insurers do not have to offer one. Each company sets its own discount for each impact class, and a Class 4 roof covering gets the highest credit. For a TWIA credit, the shingle must have passed UL 2218 and carry a label showing its class, and the contractor fills out TDI form PC068.
New roof prices by material are on the roof replacement cost page.
Choosing a roofing company in Houston
Texas has no statewide roofing license, according to a third-party licensing guide, so there is no state number to look up. In Houston, the city permit is the paper trail. Compare the rules in the other states we cover on the roofing license by state page.
- Will you file the Houston Residential Roofing Permit if my job needs one, and how long until it issues?
- What is your visit fee, and is it credited if I hire you for the repair?
- Will the quote list materials, labor, flashing, disposal and the permit as separate lines?
- What warranty do you give on labor, and will you put it in writing?
- There are solar panels on my roof. Do you remove and reinstall them, or do I need a solar company? (See solar service in Houston.)
One more Texas rule: a roofer may not waive or rebate your insurance deductible. The Texas Department of Insurance cites Business and Commerce Code 27.02, which also requires any contract of $1,000 or more involving an insurance settlement to say that you owe the deductible. A roofer also may not act as your public adjuster on a job it is doing.
Have the address, the roof material and its rough age ready. Call the roof line and ask the Houston company about its visit fee and the city permit before it schedules anything.
Where to complain about a Houston roofer
File with the Texas Attorney General's consumer protection division online. The form cannot save a half-finished complaint, so gather the contract, photos and receipts first. Mail goes to PO Box 12548, Austin, TX 78711-2548. TDI says deductible violations also go to the Attorney General. We did not find a City of Houston or Harris County office that takes contractor complaints.

Roof replacement in Houston: cost and the re-roof permit
Roof replacement in Houston typically costs $5,902 to $13,378, with a $9,609 average, the national range HomeAdvisor published in 2026; HomeGuide's national range is $5,700 to $16,000. No publisher lists a Houston-only price. HomeAdvisor's per-square-foot figures run $3 to $7 for asphalt, $7 to $13 for metal and $10 to $20 for tile, and removing the old roof adds $1,500 to $4,500.
Every re-roof or overlay on a Houston home needs the City's Residential Roofing Permit, with plan review, inspection, 10 business days of processing and a $33.56 admin fee on top of the fee schedule. Texas insurers are not required to give impact-resistant roof discounts, TDI says, but those that do give Class 4 roofs the highest credit. Texas logged 878 hail events in 2024, more than any other state, Insurance Journal reported. If you are filing a storm claim, call your insurer first; the roof line is for work you pay for directly.
