Flash floods and leaks in Las Vegas
The valley is dry, but its floods are deadly. The Clark County Regional Flood Control District says at least 35 people have died as a result of flooding in Clark County since 1960. Floods brought presidential disaster declarations in 1999, and winter storms in 2020 swept two people away. FEMA's FloodSmart site notes that most homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage, so water that comes in from outside is usually a separate policy question.
Inside the house, the Las Vegas Valley Water District points to leaks most people never see: it says more than 20 percent of gravity-flush toilets leak. A slow leak under a slab or behind a wall may not show at all. If you suspect one, see leak detection.
Find the leak and the shutoff in a Las Vegas home
LVVWD's own test: turn off all the water in the house and watch the red or white flow-indicator triangle on the meter. If it moves, water is leaking somewhere. The main shutoff is usually in the front yard near the sewer riser cap, in the garage or in the home's manifold system. Find it before you need it. A Southern Nevada Water Authority rebate also covers a leak sensor.
Is it an emergency? When water damage in Las Vegas cannot wait
Water damage is an emergency while water is still coming in, when it is near outlets or the panel, or when a ceiling sags. Even after the leak stops, start drying within 24 to 48 hours: the EPA says wet materials dried in that window usually will not grow mold.
- Cannot find the shutoff: LVVWD says it is usually in the front yard near the sewer riser cap, in the garage or at the home's manifold.
- Now: water near outlets, the panel or a light fixture. Shut off the breaker only from a dry spot, then see electricians in Las Vegas.
- Now: sewage or a toilet backup. It is contaminated water; see sewage cleanup.
- Today: a pipe leak you have shut off. Call a plumber in Las Vegas for the pipe and a restoration company for the drying.
- Can be booked: an old, dry stain with firm drywall and no musty smell. Have it checked soon so it does not become a mold remediation job.
Photograph everything and call your insurer too, and do not sign an assignment of benefits or any paper that hands your claim to a contractor.
First steps after water damage in Las Vegas
- Close the main shutoff. LVVWD's customer line is 702-870-2011 or 800-252-2011.
- Keep away from wet wiring. Shut off the breaker only from a dry spot, and check NV Energy's outage list at nvenergy.com for power problems. Wet outlets need an electrician in Las Vegas.
- Photograph the damage room by room.
- Call your insurer and a restoration company. Sign nothing that hands your claim to the contractor.
- Dry within 24 to 48 hours. The EPA's guidance is that materials dried within that window usually stay mold free.
Smell gas? Leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.

LVVWD leak credit and repair reimbursement
LVVWD runs two programs. The Leak Adjustment Program reverses the leak part of excess use charges if use during the leak was at least 50% above your baseline, the repair was done within 60 days of the billing date when the leak was found, and you have had no credit in the past 12 months. Apply in My Account within 90 days of the repair.
The Leak Repair Reimbursement Program pays up to 50% of the repair cost, capped at $2,000 per event, for repairs of at least $200. It is for single-family owners with paid invoices only, and since July 1, 2025 it can be used once per rolling 365 days. Keep every plumbing invoice.
Licenses in Nevada
Nevada contractors are licensed by the Nevada State Contractors Board. Ask for the license number, because the board's Residential Recovery Fund covers only work by licensed contractors, not owner-builder jobs. We found no Nevada licensing rule specific to mold remediation in our sources; see mold remediation for EPA guidance and costs.
