Do this now: mold in a Las Vegas home

- Keep people with asthma or mold allergies out of the room; the CDC says they may have severe reactions.
- Do not run the HVAC if you know or suspect it has mold in it, the EPA says.
- Photograph the mold and the leak. If it came from a sudden leak, call your insurer.
- Under about 10 square feet? The EPA says you can usually clean it yourself. Larger, call the water damage line.

Is it urgent? Las Vegas mold that needs a company now
Mold is urgent when it covers more than about 10 square feet, the EPA's line for calling in help; when it follows a flood, sewage or a long hidden leak; or when someone in the house is reacting to it. The CDC lists a stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing or wheezing, burning eyes or a skin rash. A small spot on a bathroom ceiling can wait for a scheduled visit, at $500 to $1,000 in HomeAdvisor's data. See mold remediation cost and mold inspection.
Mold in Las Vegas rentals and HOAs
Mold is a common rental complaint in the valley. A Clark County landlord-tenant hotline took almost 5,000 calls from March 2014 to July 2016, and "mold-like substances" was one of the top three complaints, a 2018 study in the Journal of Environmental Health found. Renters should report the leak and the mold to the landlord in writing. In common-interest communities, Nevada law (NRS 116.310312) lets an HOA board remove and remediate water or mold damage in a vacant unit after notice to the owner, the Environmental Law Institute's summary says.
Fix the leak and get money back from LVVWD
The Las Vegas Valley Water District's Leak Repair Reimbursement pays up to 50% of a leak repair, capped at $2,000 per event, on repairs of at least $200, for single-family owners with paid invoices. Its Leak Adjustment reverses the leak part of the bill when use ran at least 50% above baseline. Neither pays for mold removal. Flash floods are the other source: at least 35 people have died from flooding in Clark County since 1960, the Regional Flood Control District says, and floodwater that sat in a house calls for professional cleanup.
Where Las Vegas homes hide mold
The median Las Vegas home was built in 1994, the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey shows. Even in newer homes, HomeAdvisor's price list shows the usual spots: attics ($1,000 to $4,000), bathrooms ($500 to $1,000) and HVAC systems ($3,000 to $10,000). Ask the company to check around the water heater, toilets and the AC air handler.
