Do this now: no AC in Las Vegas
Move people out of the heat first: above 90 F indoors, the CDC says a fan can raise body temperature, so go somewhere with air conditioning and dial 2-1-1 to find one.
- Gas furnace smell or a CO alarm? Get out and call 911 from outside (CPSC). Furnace problems are covered in furnace repair.
- Heat stroke signs? A body temperature above 103 F, hot red dry skin, a fast strong pulse or confusion: call 911 first (Ready.gov).
- Over 90 F inside? The CDC says a fan can raise body temperature at that point, so go somewhere with air conditioning. Dial 2-1-1 to find one.
- Check the thermostat, filter and breaker. If the breaker trips again, leave it off.
- Power out instead? Check NV Energy's outage list at nvenergy.com/outages.
Is it an emergency? Signs to call a Las Vegas AC company today
In a Las Vegas summer, yes: the valley averages 78 days a year at 100 F or above (NOAA normals), and the Southern Nevada Health District says heat illness and deaths usually peak in August.
- Over 90 F inside with someone at higher risk. The CDC names people 65 and older, infants and young children, and people with asthma or heart disease.
- Hot nights ahead. Las Vegas had 63 straight nights at 80 F or above in 2024, KTNV reported, so a house does not cool off on its own overnight.
- Heat stroke signs. Call 911 first.
- Winter: a furnace out on one of the valley's roughly 10 freezing nights a year, or any gas smell or CO alarm.
- A breaker that trips again after one reset.
Can it wait? An AC that runs but falls behind on a mild day can usually wait for regular hours. HomeGuide puts after-hours AC labor at $160 to $250 an hour nationally, against $75 to $150 in regular hours.
AC repair in Las Vegas is service on a central AC, heat pump or gas furnace by a contractor licensed by the Nevada State Contractors Board in the C-21 refrigeration and air-conditioning class. ConsumerAffairs puts most local repairs at $150 to $600.
Las Vegas heat: why nights matter
Summer 2024 was the hottest on record in Las Vegas. KTNV reported an all-time high of 120 F at Harry Reid Airport on July 7, 2024, seven straight days at 115 F or higher, and 63 straight nights when the low stayed at 80 F or above. With lows that high, the AC gets little rest overnight.
NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the airport show a July high of 104.5 F, 78 days a year at 100 F or above and 3,720 cooling degree days. The Southern Nevada Health District says 2025 had 77 days at 100 F or higher and was the fifth-warmest year on record.
Heat deaths in Clark County
The Southern Nevada Health District counted 513 heat-associated deaths in Clark County in 2024 and 284 in 2025, a 45% drop. It says heat illness and deaths usually peak in August.

Las Vegas permits and the C-21 license
Inside the City of Las Vegas, "Heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) exact change outs/repairs" are on the list of permits issued online with no plan. The city says any other work not on the list needs a plan submitted and reviewed, so a bigger unit, new ductwork or a move to a heat pump may take longer. Clark County applications require contractors to certify they are licensed under NRS 624.
Nevada licenses HVAC under classification C-21, refrigeration and air-conditioning, with subclasses including C-21b air-conditioning and C-21d maintenance, under NAC 624.380.
Rebates and replacement prices in Las Vegas
NV Energy's PowerShift program has paid AC replacement rebates of $340 to $2,000 depending on unit type and size, Nevada Current reported in July 2024, but the 2024 money ran out and the rebates paused from June 11 until July 9. We could not confirm the 2026 status on an NV Energy page, so ask the contractor before you count on it. No federal 25C credit applies to 2026 installs, the IRS says. Prices: ConsumerAffairs puts a full system at $7,500 to $16,000; AC replacement cost has national ranges.
Las Vegas also needs heat. The normals show 1,836 heating degree days and about 10 nights a year at or below freezing, so ask the company to check the heating side while it is there.
Questions for a Las Vegas HVAC company
- What is your NSCB license number, and does it include C-21?
- Is this an exact change-out, or will the permit need plans?
- Is an NV Energy rebate open right now for this unit?
- What is the diagnostic fee, and is it higher on weekends?
- Can I see proof of insurance and the price in writing?
The NSCB takes complaints within four years after the work is completed; its Southern Nevada investigations line is (702) 486-1160, and its Residential Recovery Fund pays up to $40,000 per claim on owner-occupied homes. The Nevada Attorney General also has a complaint form. Calls to the heating and AC line go to an independent company that serves your area and takes this kind of job (how calls work).
Ready to replace before next July? Call the heating and AC line and ask whether the job qualifies as an exact change-out.

AC repair in Las Vegas: what the common fixes cost
AC repair in Las Vegas costs $150 to $600 for most jobs, ConsumerAffairs reported in April 2026, close to HomeAdvisor's 2026 national range of $172 to $664 and its $417 average. Bigger parts are priced nationally: HomeAdvisor puts a fan or blower motor at $250 to $800, an evaporator coil at $600 to $2,000 and a compressor at $1,200 to $2,800. If the system still runs on R-22, repairs get harder: the EPA says U.S. production and import of R-22 ended January 1, 2020, though an existing system can keep using it. HomeAdvisor suggests replacing rather than repairing when the unit uses R-22, is more than 10 years old, or when the repair cost times the unit's age tops $5,000. A system out on a 100 degree day is covered on emergency AC repair in Las Vegas.
AC installation in Las Vegas: cost, permit and efficiency rules
AC installation in Las Vegas runs $7,500 to $16,000 for a full system, the local range ConsumerAffairs reported in 2026; HomeAdvisor's national average for an AC installation is $5,978, typically $3,887 to $8,073, and Fixr puts a 3-ton central AC at $5,000 to $9,150 installed. Since 2023, Nevada falls in the DOE's Southwest region, where a new split AC must meet 14.3 SEER2 plus EER2 limits, a stricter rule than in the North. Inside the City of Las Vegas, an exact HVAC change-out is an online permit with no plans; anything beyond that, such as new ductwork, goes through plan review. HomeGuide puts replacement permits at $100 to $250 nationally. Ask the contractor which unit sizes meet the Southwest rule before you compare quotes, and see AC replacement cost and heat pump installation cost.
