Las Vegas heat sets records and then breaks them. In July 2024 the city saw 7 straight days at 115°F or higher (the old record was 4) and 11 straight days at 110°F or higher, and the all-time high reached 120°F on July 7, KTNV reported from National Weather Service data. The same summer had 63 nights in a row that never dropped below 80°F.

Do this now: sparks, smoke, a downed line or a dead circuit

Work down this list in order; the first two are not jobs for an electrician.

  1. Sparks, smoke or a burning smell: get everyone out and call 911 from outside. Do not stay to open the panel or look for the source.
  2. A downed power line: stay far away, treat every wire as live and call 911, as FPL's power line safety guidance says; then report it to the electric utility. In Las Vegas, that is NV Energy.
  3. Water near outlets or the panel: shut off the breaker only if you can reach the panel from a dry spot. If you cannot, stay out of the room.
  4. One circuit dead: unplug everything on it and reset the breaker one time. If it trips again, stop; breaker keeps tripping explains why.
  5. Then call an electrician and ask for the service call fee before anyone is sent.

Is it an emergency? Signs you need an electrician today

Call today if you notice any of these warning signs from ESFI: an outlet or switch that is warm or discolored, sizzling or buzzing, a mild shock or tingle, flickering or dimming lights, or a breaker that trips again and again. Smoke or a burning smell is a 911 call first.

Neighborhood out? Check NV Energy's outage list at nvenergy.com/outages. A dead AC circuit in the summer heat, with the street powered, is an electrician's job.

What can usually wait for a daytime visit: one dead outlet after you have pressed RESET on the nearest GFCI and checked the breaker, or a fixture that stopped working with no heat, smell or sound. That keeps you off night and weekend rates, which HomeGuide puts at $150 to $200 an hour. The emergency electrician guide covers after-hours calls.

City of Las Vegas electrical permits

The City of Las Vegas lets licensed contractors pull several electrical permits online without plans. Two cover most home jobs: "Electric meter tag, panel change or service change," where a service change needs a 231 inspection, and "Minor electrical, 12 devices or less." New dedicated circuits to fixed appliances need plans.

Outside city limits, Clark County's permit application asks the contractor to certify that it is licensed under NRS 624, the state contractor law, and includes a separate owner-builder declaration for homeowners doing their own work.

Nevada license: the C-2 and what it takes

Nevada licenses electrical contractors under classification C-2, with subclasses that include C-2a wiring, C-2f residential wiring and C-2g photovoltaics, per NAC 624.200. Mike Holt's state summary says the C-2 takes four years of experience in the last ten, four references and OSHA 10 or 30 training. The electrician license guide by state sets Nevada next to Arizona, California and the rest.

NV Energy outages and summer storms

In August 2026, NV Energy reported 56 separate outages affecting nearly 5,000 customers, KTNV reported. NV Energy lists current outages on its website. A grid outage is NV Energy's to fix; what an electrician fixes is the house side once power returns.

  • Neighborhood out: check NV Energy's outage list at nvenergy.com/outages.
  • Line down: stay away and report it to NV Energy. If it is sparking or burning, or someone is hurt, call 911.
  • Smoke or a burning smell from the panel or an outlet: leave and call 911.
  • A breaker trips every time the AC starts: reset it once, and call an electrician if it trips again.
  • Water from a storm near outlets: stay out of the water, do not touch them, and call an electrician.

The breaker keeps tripping guide covers what to check first, and electrical panel upgrade cost explains when a panel is too small. For backup power, see generator installation.

Hiring a Las Vegas electrician and filing a complaint

  1. Ask for the Nevada contractor license number and confirm it is C-2.
  2. Ask which permit the job needs: panel or service change, minor electrical, or a plan-reviewed circuit.
  3. Ask for the service call fee; ConsumerAffairs puts it at $80 to $200 locally.
  4. Ask for the price in writing before work starts.

The Nevada State Contractors Board takes complaints within four years after the work is done; its Southern Nevada investigations line is (702) 486-1160. Its Residential Recovery Fund pays up to $40,000 per claim on owner-occupied single-family homes, for work by licensed contractors only, not owner-builder jobs. FOX5 reported in 2024 that the board gets about 3,000 complaints a year. Calls to the electrician line go to an independent company that serves your area and takes this kind of job; how calls work.
