Sunnova Bankruptcy: Who Services Your System in 2026

Sunnova filed Chapter 11 on June 8, 2025 and has ceased independent operations.

Most of its roughly 441,000 accounts are serviced by SunStrong Management at 866-786-6682 and SunStrong's account portal (sunstrongmanagement.com/homeowners/account). Leases keep their service guarantee; cash and loan systems SunStrong did not take have no servicer.

Definition

The Sunnova bankruptcy is the June 8, 2025 Chapter 11 filing of Sunnova Energy International, a Houston solar lease and loan provider with more than 441,000 customers, which ended with its business sold to Solaris Assets and its customer accounts serviced by SunStrong Management.

What happened to Sunnova

Houston-based Sunnova, which served over 441,000 customers at the end of 2024, filed Chapter 11 in the Southern District of Texas on June 8, 2025 with about $8.5 billion of debt and after laying off 15% of staff. It ran a Section 363 sale process (TEPH assets to an ATLAS SP affiliate for $15 million and new-home assets to Lennar for $16 million in June 2025) and by September 4, 2025 Solaris Assets, formed by GoodFinch Management, had completed the purchase of the business and moved operations to SunStrong Management. Sunnova.com now says the company has ceased independent operations (updated November 2, 2025).

Is it an emergency? Signs a Sunnova system needs help today

A Sunnova system with no installer behind it is an emergency only if it shows fire or electrical damage; a system that has simply stopped producing can wait for a normal service visit, and the 5 signs below sort one from the other.

  • Smoke, flames, sparks, arcing or a burning smell at the panels, inverter, battery or wiring: get everyone away from it and call 911. Tell the operator the house has rooftop solar and show firefighters where the AC disconnect is, as Hawaiian Electric advises. Do not touch the equipment, and do not throw water on a burning battery.
  • Panels cracked, torn loose or hanging after a storm, or wires exposed: stay off the roof and do not touch them. Hawaiian Electric says to assume solar panels are energized. If you can reach the AC disconnect or the system shutdown switch without going near the damage, turn it off. Tesla's inverter manual says turning off the AC disconnect starts rapid shutdown, which brings a Tesla array to safe voltage levels within 30 seconds.
  • Water coming through the ceiling under the array: urgent within days, because a leak at a mount keeps getting worse. That is roof work; see roof leak under solar panels.
  • The system shows zero but nothing is damaged: not an emergency. The house still has grid power; the cost is lost production every sunny day, so check the breaker and the inverter light, then call the repair line.
  • A leased or PPA Sunnova system: report it to SunStrong at 866-786-6682 before hiring anyone; the lease makes the repair theirs.

Published contacts as of the check date. Hours are not published by most successors.

Who services Sunnova systems now

Leased and PPA systems: SunStrong Management, which also handles loan accounts but says it does not repair systems owned outright or on a loan. Cash systems and any account SunStrong did not take: no servicer; use SunStrong's third-party directory or an independent contractor.

The dividing line is the welcome email. SunStrong sent one to every account it took over. If you lease and received it, SunStrong is your servicer and the lease production guarantee is its obligation. If you own the system and never heard from SunStrong, you have no servicer: equipment warranties go to the manufacturer and labor goes to a contractor you hire. The who services my system page covers both cases.

Sunnova warranty and Sunnova Protect

Lease/PPA service and production guarantees moved with the contracts to SunStrong. Sunnova Protect service plans for cash/loan customers: assumption not confirmed. Manufacturer warranties unaffected.

Sunnova lease transfer when selling the house

SunStrong runs a Sell My Home transfer process for Sunnova leases through the account portal, where the buyer applies to assume the lease. Details on both sides are in the buying and selling guide.

What to do next

If you own the system (cash or loan)
  1. Keep paying your loan servicer; the loan did not change.
  2. Check whether SunStrong sent you a welcome email; if not, you are unserviced.
  3. Register inverters and panels directly with the manufacturers.
  4. Hire a contractor from SunStrong's state directory or any orphan-system specialist.
  5. If your install was incomplete, call GoodLeap (888) 975-5436 or your dealer.
If you lease or have a PPA
  1. Keep paying as usual until SunStrong instructs otherwise.
  2. Call 866-786-6682 or use SunStrong's account page (sunstrongmanagement.com/homeowners/account) for billing and repairs.
  3. Report underproduction in writing; the lease production guarantee is now SunStrong's obligation.
  4. Save your lease, Sunnova statements and SunStrong correspondence.
  5. Selling your home: use SunStrong's 'Sell My Home' transfer process.

Roof replacement with a Sunnova system

If you lease or have a PPA, the panels belong to the portfolio Solaris bought in September 2025, and SunStrong Management services it. Nothing comes off the roof without SunStrong's approval. Sunnova's old pages on roof work and panel removal now redirect to SunStrong's general help center, which, as of October 10, 2026, has no roof or removal instructions, and SunStrong's inquiry form has no roof category. Send the request in writing through the portal listed on SunStrong's account page (sunstrongmanagement.com/homeowners/account) or call 866-786-6682, give the roofer's dates, and ask who pays for removal and reinstall under your contract. Start weeks ahead.

If you own the system, no approval is needed. Any licensed solar contractor can detach and reset it; the removal and reinstall page has the costs and the roof replacement page the sequence.

Own the system and reroofing? Call the roof line with your panel count and roof type. Not for insurance or storm claims.

Sunnova reviews and complaints

The BBB now lists Sunnova Energy International as Not Rated because it is out of business, with 290 complaints in the last three years and a 1 out of 5 average across 22 customer reviews (checked October 10, 2026). In 2023 the Houston BBB issued a pattern-of-complaints alert over sales tactics, customer service and missed technician visits. Trustpilot still shows a 4.4 rating from 2,046 reviews, but only 2 are from the last 12 months; most were invited before the bankruptcy and say little about service today. Service is now SunStrong Management's, so its record, a BBB D+ with more than 1,200 complaints, is the one that matters for current accounts. The Texas Attorney General had at least 81 complaints about Sunnova on file as of June 2026.

Sunnova lawsuits

  • Investor class action (S.D. Texas, filed February 16, 2024) alleging Sunnova hid predatory sales practices. Dismissed March 14, 2025; plaintiffs appealed to the Fifth Circuit; stayed June 26, 2025 by the bankruptcy. No settlement reported.
  • WARN Act class action filed June 16, 2025 in the bankruptcy court on behalf of employees laid off without 60 days' notice.
  • No state attorney general lawsuit against Sunnova itself was found from 2023 to 2026. Homeowner claims now run through the bankruptcy case and SunStrong.
