Solar Panel Removal and Reinstall: $200 to $600 Each (2026)
Removing and reinstalling a solar array for a new roof costs $200 to $600 per panel in 2025 to 2026 published ranges, or about $5,000 to $9,000 for a 20 to 30 panel system, plus a permit in most cities.
A solar contractor does it, not the roofer: 1 to 2 days to take the array off, the new roof, then 2 to 3 days to reinstall and recommission (Fixr). Roofers and insurers call it detach and reset.

Solar panel removal and reinstall, also called detach and reset, is the temporary removal of a roof-mounted solar array so a roof can be replaced or repaired, followed by reinstallation and recommissioning of the same panels, and it costs $200 to $600 per panel in 2025 to 2026 published ranges.
If you lease your system or have a power purchase agreement, the financing company owns it and is responsible for this work; call the servicer on your statement (SunStrong for Sunnova and legacy SunPower, Renewbrook for most PosiGen leases). The rest of this page is for owners of cash and loan systems. The owned vs leased guide explains the difference.

How much does solar panel removal and reinstall cost
Per-panel prices published in 2026 run from $275 to $300 (Paradise Energy, Pennsylvania, September 2026) and $300 to $400 (Southern Energy, North Carolina, July 2026) up to $350 to $600 (Forme Solar, Southern California, October 2026). National guides (Fixr, January 2025; EnergySage, May 2026) put it at $200 to $300 per panel. Detach and reset: the same job by another name
Roofers and insurance adjusters call it detach and reset, or D&R; solar companies call it removal and reinstall, or R&R. It is one job: the solar crew takes the array off, the roofer does the roof, and the solar crew puts the array back with new flashing at every mount and restarts it. On an insurance estimate, it is the line item that covers the panels coming off and going back on.
How long removal and reinstall takes
- Before
Paperwork
Lessor sign-off if leased, electrical permit, monitoring account in your name, photos of the layout and per-panel output.
- 1 to 2 days
Detach
Solar crew shuts the system down, labels and removes panels, racking and wiring, and stores them.
- Roofer
New roof
Roofer tears off and replaces the roof. Some manufacturers set a wait before reinstall (Tesla: 30 days).
- 2 to 3 days
Reset
Solar crew installs new flashing at every mount, the racking, the panels and the wiring.
- After
Inspect and restart
Inspection where the city requires it, then recommissioning and a check that output matches the photos.
Fixr puts removal at 1 to 2 days and reinstall at 2 to 3 days, with the roof work in between. Permits add time: Tesla says permits for its systems can take up to two months on average and requires a 30-day wait after a reroof before reinstalling. Leased systems add the lessor's approval; the legacy SunPower lease terms, for example, required at least 15 days' notice before roof work.
What the price includes
- Removal: disconnecting the array, labeling and removing panels, removing racking and standoffs, and storing the panels on site or off.
- Reinstall: new flashing and sealant at every penetration, racking, panels in the original layout, wiring, and recommissioning with the inverter and monitoring.
- Permit and inspection: most jurisdictions treat reinstall as new electrical work and require a permit and inspection. The state rules table has the general rule by state.
- Not usually included: the roof itself ($7,500 to $14,000 for an asphalt replacement per Fixr, February 2026), new panels if any are damaged, or upgrades such as a new inverter or added panels, which some owners bundle in while the array is down.
Who removes and reinstalls solar panels: the roofer or a solar company
A solar contractor, in almost every case. Fixr says only certified solar professionals should remove or reinstall panels, and many roofing companies subcontract the detach and reset to a solar crew and coordinate the dates. Some companies do both; the solar and roofing companies page compares the two setups. The sequence is: solar crew removes the array (1 to 2 days per Fixr), roofer replaces the roof, solar crew reinstalls and recommissions (2 to 3 days), inspector signs off where the city requires it. Get the solar contractor's dates before you lock in the roofer's, since the roofer cannot start until the array is off. If the original installer has closed, any solar contractor can do the work; the roof replacement with solar page covers the roofer's side.
Removal and reinstall when the installer is out of business
The reinstall is where orphaned systems get expensive if nobody plans ahead. The new contractor needs the layout, the string or microinverter map and the monitoring access to recommission the system properly. Get Enphase or SolarEdge to transfer the monitoring site to you before the removal, keep the permit drawings, and have the contractor photograph the array before the first panel comes off. A reinstall that comes back up with the same per-panel readings as before is the test of a good job. If your installer is gone, check the bankruptcy tracker for who holds your account, then come back here for the repair.
Does removal and reinstall affect the warranty
Equipment warranties from the panel and inverter manufacturers generally continue, with limits: Enphase does not cover removal or reinstall labor and excludes damage from improper handling, SolarEdge makes the buyer pay that labor and requires its installation procedures to be followed, and Tesla says hiring your own contractor may void the system warranty. The original installer's workmanship warranty, if the installer still exists, often requires that installer to do the detach and reset, so check the contract; if the installer has closed, that warranty is already gone. The new contractor gives its own workmanship warranty on the reinstall (ask how many years it covers the penetrations), and the roofer warrants the roof. Ask both in writing who covers a leak at a solar mount; the answer should be the solar contractor.
Removal and reinstall services near you
Most solar panel removal is temporary, for a new roof or a roof repair, and the companies that do it are solar installers, solar service companies and some combined roofing and solar contractors. Before hiring one, ask for the state license number, whether it handles your inverter brand, who pulls the permit, where the panels are stored, and how many years it warrants the roof penetrations after the reinstall. If you want the panels gone for good, that is a different job: see permanent removal and disposal.

Questions people ask
How much does it cost to remove and reinstall solar panels?
$200 to $600 per panel in 2025 to 2026 published ranges. Southern Energy quotes $300 to $400 per panel in 2026, Paradise Energy $275 to $300, Forme Solar $350 to $600. A 20-panel system runs about $5,000 to $8,000.
Can a roofer remove solar panels?
Usually not. The work needs an electrical or solar contractor license in most states and the roofer does not want liability for the array. Roofers subcontract the detach and reset to a solar company and coordinate dates.
How long does it take to remove solar panels and reinstall them?
About 1 to 2 days to remove and 2 to 3 days to reinstall, per Fixr, plus the roofing work in between and any permit or inspection time. Tesla requires a 30-day wait after a reroof.
What is solar panel detach and reset?
Another name for removal and reinstall, used by roofers and insurance adjusters. The solar crew takes the array off, the roofer replaces the roof, and the crew reinstalls and restarts the system.
Do I need a permit to reinstall solar panels?
In most jurisdictions, yes. The array is being re-attached and re-energized, so cities treat it as new electrical work with a permit and inspection. Confirm with the local building department.
Can I remove and reinstall solar panels if my installer went out of business?
Yes. Any licensed solar contractor can do it. Transfer the monitoring account to yourself first and keep the permit drawings so the new contractor can recommission the system to the same output.
Should I upgrade anything while the panels are off?
It is the cheapest time to replace an old string inverter, add a battery, or swap failing panels, since the labor to access the roof is already paid for.
What does solar panel removal and reinstallation include?
Shutting down and labeling the system, removing panels and racking, storing them, reinstalling with new flashing at every mount, rewiring, and recommissioning with an inspection where the city requires it.
Who does solar panel removal near me?
Solar installers, solar service companies and some roofing and solar contractors. Call the roof line on this page, or ask any roofer you hire who does its detach and reset work.
