Definition

A solar company bankruptcy tracker is a dated list of residential solar installers and financiers that have filed for bankruptcy or closed, with the court, the company now holding each customer account, and what happened to the workmanship warranty.

Know what the system needs? Call the line for the job: solar repair, new equipment, or roof work.

List of bankrupt solar companies and closed installers

The table lists 26 residential solar installers and financiers that filed for bankruptcy, were sold out of insolvency, or closed, from Freedom Forever in April 2026 back to Sungevity in 2017. Each row names the successor servicer where one exists and links to a company guide where there is one. Sunnova alone reported more than 441,000 customers at the end of 2024, Freedom Forever claimed 150,000 installations, and PosiGen served about 40,000 households.

Status codes: CH. 7 is a liquidation (the company is being wound down and will not service systems), CH. 11 is a reorganization or sale, SOLD means the business or its contracts went to a buyer, EXITED means the parent company left solar without a bankruptcy, and CLOSED means the company stopped operating without a filing that could be located.

Your installer is on this list and something needs doing? Call the line for the job.

What happens to your solar system when the installer goes out of business

The panels keep working. A home solar system has no dependency on its installer once it has permission to operate from the utility. What changes is who is responsible for the two things an installer normally handles: workmanship repairs (racking, wiring, roof penetrations, monitoring setup) and warranty claims on equipment. Equipment warranties stay with the manufacturer. Workmanship warranties become a claim against the bankrupt company, which in a Chapter 7 case rarely pays out.

Who you call next depends on how you paid. A leased or power purchase agreement system is owned by the financing company, which must repair it; those contracts moved to SunStrong Management (Sunnova, legacy SunPower, part of PosiGen) or Renewbrook (most of PosiGen). A cash or loan system is yours, and no successor has assumed service for cash and loan customers of any company on this list. The owned vs leased page explains the difference, and the who services my system lookup gives the answer by installer.

How to file a claim against a bankrupt solar company

A proof of claim is the form that tells the bankruptcy court you are owed money: a deposit on an unfinished system, the cost of a repair the installer should have covered, or damage from a bad installation. It is Official Form 410, filed with the claims agent named in the table above (Kroll, Stretto or Epiq) or the court clerk, by the bar date. Freedom Forever's bar date is October 16, 2026. Titan's (March 11, 2025) and Purelight's (May 28, 2026) have passed. The form is designed for creditors to file themselves and there is no filing fee; whether to involve a lawyer is your call. A claim only pays if the estate has money left after secured lenders, which in liquidations is uncommon.

Who keeps this list current

The tracker is checked against court dockets, claims-agent pages, state attorney general releases and solar trade press, and updated within a week of any new filing, sale or servicer change. The last check was October 11, 2026. Companies are added only when a court filing, a company statement or two independent news reports confirm the closure. A company that is still operating is never listed, and a company reported closed in error is removed with a correction note on the editorial standards page.

Questions people ask

Which solar companies went out of business in 2026?

Freedom Forever filed Chapter 11 on April 15, 2026 and was converted to Chapter 7 on August 7, 2026. Purelight Power filed Chapter 7 on December 30, 2025. PosiGen's lease portfolio was sold to Renewbrook and SunStrong in February 2026. The tracker above lists every confirmed closure.

What happens if my solar company goes out of business?

Your panels keep producing. Equipment warranties stay with the manufacturers. The installer's workmanship warranty becomes a claim in the bankruptcy. Leased systems are repaired by the financing company; owned systems need an independent contractor.

Is Sunnova still in business?

No. Sunnova filed Chapter 11 on June 8, 2025 and has ceased independent operations. Its customer accounts are serviced by SunStrong Management at 866-786-6682.

Who took over SunPower?

Complete Solaria bought the SunPower brand, Blue Raven and the dealer network in September 2024 and now operates as SunPower Inc. Legacy leases went to SunStrong Management. SunPower-branded panels are warranted by Maxeon.

How many solar companies have gone bankrupt?

Solar Insure's list names 87 companies (checked October 9, 2026; its entries are undated). This tracker lists 26 with court, contact and warranty details confirmed against filings and press.

Can I still file a claim against Freedom Forever?

Yes, until October 16, 2026. File Official Form 410 through Kroll at restructuring.ra.kroll.com/FreedomForever for deposits, unfinished work, roof damage or warranty claims. Governmental claims are due February 3, 2027.

What is an orphaned solar system?

A home solar system whose installer has closed, leaving no company responsible for workmanship warranty repairs, monitoring access or service.

My solar company went out of business. What do I do?

Find your installer in the tracker to see who holds your account, keep paying any lease or loan, register your equipment with the manufacturers, and file a proof of claim if a bankruptcy deadline is open.

Which other solar companies went bankrupt or out of business?

Besides Sunnova, SunPower and Freedom Forever, the tracker covers Erus Energy (Chapter 7, November 2023), Vision Solar (Chapter 7, December 2023), Sunworks and its Solcius subsidiary (Chapter 7, February 2024), Lumio (Chapter 11, September 2024), Pink Energy (Chapter 7, 2022), Titan Solar Power (Chapter 7, June 2024) and Sungevity (Chapter 11, 2017; closed for good in 2020), among others.

Not sure what the system needs? Call the solar repair line and describe what the app or inverter shows; roof work goes to the roof line.
