Roof Replacement With Solar Panels: $7,500 to $14,000 (2026)
A new asphalt roof costs $7,500 to $14,000 (Fixr, 2026), and the solar array adds $200 to $600 per panel to take down and put back.
A solar contractor does the detach and reset and the roofer does the roof; the crew work takes about a week, and permits or a manufacturer wait (Tesla: 30 days) can stretch it to one or two months. Replace the roof first if it has fewer than 10 years left.

Roof replacement with solar panels is a roofing job on a house that already has a solar array, which requires a solar contractor to detach the panels before the roofer starts and reset them afterward, adding $200 to $600 per panel to a roof that costs $7,500 to $14,000 on its own in 2026 published ranges.
If you lease your system or have a power purchase agreement, the financing company owns it and is responsible for this work; call the servicer on your statement (SunStrong for Sunnova and legacy SunPower, Renewbrook for most PosiGen leases). The rest of this page is for owners of cash and loan systems. The owned vs leased guide explains the difference.

How much does a roof replacement cost with solar panels
Two bills. The roof: $7,500 to $14,000 for a typical asphalt replacement in Fixr's roof replacement guide (February 2026), about $14,500 on average with most jobs at $8,000 to $36,000 in its shingle guide (January 2026), $5,800 to $13,200 (HomeAdvisor, June 2026), or about $9,500 (EnergySage, May 2026). The solar detach and reset: $200 to $600 per panel, so $4,000 to $12,000 for 20 panels; 2026 regional quotes mostly land between $5,000 and $8,000. Tile and metal roofs push both numbers up. Should I replace my roof before installing solar
Yes, if the roof has less than 10 years left (EnergySage's rule of thumb). Asphalt shingles last 15 to 40 years (Fixr) and a solar array 25 to 30, so a roof with 10 or fewer years remaining will need replacing while the panels are still working, which means paying the detach and reset. A roof inspection ($150 to $350) before any solar install or any orphaned-system takeover answers the question; the roof readiness guide covers age, direction, pitch and shade. For a system that is already installed on an aging roof, the economics favor replacing the roof at the same time as any major solar work, since the roof access labor is paid once.
Roof leak under solar panels
A leak that appears below an array is often a failed flashing or sealant at a mount rather than the roof itself, and leaks at mounts are one of the main reasons for callbacks in residential solar. Published repair ranges run $500 to $2,000 (NuWatt, April 2026) and $300 to $1,000 for roof repairs after panel removal (Angi, April 2026). With the original installer gone, the workmanship warranty that would have covered it is gone too; a solar contractor, not a roofer, should diagnose it, because the fix is at the standoff and may require lifting a panel. The roof leak guide covers causes, cost and who pays.

Hail and storm damage to a roof with solar
Homeowners insurance generally covers sudden storm damage to both the roof and the panels when the policy lists the system. The claim should include the detach and reset cost, since the roof cannot be replaced without it, and adjusters commonly miss that line. Get the solar contractor's written estimate before the adjuster visit. In Florida, Texas and several other states, contractors may not pay or receive referral fees on insurance-funded work and may not act as public adjusters; the storm damage guide has the details.
Do solar panels void the roof warranty
Usually not for shingle defects. A 2022 Solar Power World survey of shingle makers found GAF and Owens Corning warranties stay in place when solar is installed, TAMKO says its roof warranty "will remain intact," and Malarkey says damage from a solar install "does not constitute a manufacturing defect." None of them pays to take the panels off: GAF's bulletin puts removal for any shingle inspection "at the owner's sole expense." The roofer's own workmanship warranty is a separate document; ask the roofer in writing how solar mounts are treated.
Roof replacement with leased solar panels
The lessor owns the panels, so nothing comes off without its approval, and the lease usually says who pays. The legacy SunPower lease terms required at least 15 days' notice and put removal and reinstall costs on the homeowner. SunStrong Management now services Sunnova and legacy SunPower leases; the SunStrong page has the contacts. Start the request in writing well before the roofer's date.
Working with a roofer and a solar contractor at the same time
- Get the solar contractor's quote and availability first; solar crews book further out than roofers.
- Share the two schedules. The roofer needs the array off the day they start and the solar crew needs the roof finished and inspected before they reinstall.
- Agree in writing who warrants the penetrations. It should be the solar contractor, with the roofer warranting the field of the roof.
- Have the solar contractor photograph the array layout and per-panel output before removal, and match it after.
Roof repair with solar panels: solar panel removal for the repair area
A small roof repair does not always need the whole array off. A crew can lift only the panels over the damaged area, repair the roof and reset them. Angi puts temporary removal for a roof repair at $1,000 to $2,000 and the roof repair itself at $300 to $1,000. If the repair is at a solar mount, it is a solar leak; the roof leak guide covers it.
Sunrun roof replacement
Sunrun sells roofing through its partner Remi Roofing at a guaranteed price, with discounted removal and reinstall when the two are bundled. Sunrun customers should call Sunrun first at (855) 478-6786, since Sunrun owns leased systems and handles its own removal and reinstall. Tesla customers use the Tesla app or (877) 798-3752, option 4 then option 2.

Questions people ask
Can you replace a roof with solar panels on it?
Not without removing them. A solar contractor detaches the array, the roofer replaces the roof, and the solar contractor reinstalls and recommissions the panels. Budget $200 to $600 per panel on top of the roof.
How much does it cost to remove solar panels for roof replacement?
$200 to $600 per panel in 2025 to 2026 published ranges, or roughly $4,000 to $12,000 for a 20-panel system including reinstall, permit and recommissioning.
Who pays to remove solar panels for a new roof?
The homeowner, unless the roof is being replaced under an insurance claim, in which case the detach and reset is part of the claim. Leased systems: the lessor usually charges the homeowner for removal requested for roofing.
Does a roof leak under solar panels mean the panels are the problem?
Often the mount flashing, not the panels. A solar contractor repairs it for $300 to $2,000 in published ranges; a roofer cannot reach it without lifting panels.
Should I replace my roof before going solar?
If it has 10 or fewer years left, yes. Panels last 25 to 30 years, and replacing a roof under an installed array costs an extra $200 to $600 per panel.
Does installing solar void my roof warranty?
Usually not for shingle defects. GAF, Owens Corning and TAMKO keep their warranties in place with solar, but none pays to remove the panels, and damage from the solar install is not a manufacturing defect.
Do you have to remove solar panels to replace a roof?
Yes, for the area under the array. Every panel over the section being replaced has to come off and go back on, which is the detach and reset charge.
Can I replace my roof if my solar panels are leased?
Yes, with the lessor's approval. The lease sets the notice period and who pays; legacy SunPower leases required 15 days' notice with costs on the homeowner.
How much does a new roof with solar panels cost?
The roof ($7,500 to $14,000 for a typical asphalt replacement per Fixr) plus $200 to $600 per panel to take the array off and put it back, so roughly $11,500 to $26,000 for a 20-panel house.
Can you reroof with solar panels on?
Not under the array. The panels over the section being reroofed must come off; the rest can stay if only part of the roof is replaced.
How much is solar panel removal for roof replacement?
$200 to $600 per panel to remove and reinstall in published 2025 to 2026 ranges, or about $3,800 on average for 14 to 16 panels per Fixr.
