Tesla Solar Roof Cost: $95,000 Last Price + Alternatives

Can you still buy a Tesla Solar Roof?

No. Electrek reported on August 20, 2026 that Tesla has discontinued the Solar Roof and will supply only solar panels from now on. Tesla told its certified installers that the tiles can no longer be ordered, and the Solar Roof page on Tesla's site now sends visitors to the solar panels page. One of Electrek's sources said Tesla had decided internally that the product was not financially viable.

It was always a small product. Electrek cites a Wood Mackenzie estimate of about 3,000 Solar Roof systems in the US over roughly seven years, at a peak of 21 to 32 roofs a week. Roofing Contractor reports that Tesla told installers it will no longer accept new Solar Roof orders. PGT Home Energy Solutions told the magazine that projects without Solar Roof material already secured must be converted to conventional solar or canceled.

If a quote for a new Solar Roof is still open, ask the installer in writing whether the tiles for your job are in hand. If they are not, the realistic choices are a new roof with solar panels, or a solar shingle from another maker. Both are priced below.

How much did a Tesla Solar Roof cost

Tesla stopped publishing Solar Roof prices before it ended the product. These are the figures the cost guides and news reports carried.

The price moved a lot over the life of the product. Electrek says Tesla first marketed the Solar Roof at around $22 per square foot, then raised prices in 2021, in some cases after customers had signed. A class action was settled for $6 million in 2023.

By 2026 the published figures sat far above regular solar. Angi puts Tesla tiles at up to $60 per square foot, against as little as $21 for GAF or CertainTeed solar shingles. Fixr's $95,000 starting figure for a 1,500 sq ft home does not include a battery; it adds about $15,700 for a Powerwall. Current battery prices are on the Tesla Powerwall cost page.

Solar shingles cost: other makers

Solar shingles are still sold by other companies. Angi and Fixr agree on $21 to $25 per square foot, but their totals differ, so both are shown.

Installed prices as each guide publishes them. Angi's state averages: California $50,800, Florida $36,100, Texas $32,300.

Angi puts labor at about 60% of a solar shingle job, plus a building permit of $100 to $500 and an electrical permit of $50 to $300. Fixr notes that solar shingles weigh about 13 pounds per square foot, against 4 to 8 for asphalt shingles, so some roofs may need reinforcement.

GAF Energy Timberline Solar

GAF Energy makes Timberline Solar, a solar shingle that goes on as part of the roof. The ES 2 version, launched in February 2025, makes 57 watts per shingle, according to GAF. GAF Energy has had trouble. In July 2023 the CPSC announced a recall of about 2,100 Timberline Solar systems because electrical components can malfunction, which is a fire hazard; the recall notice cites one fire and five thermal incidents with property damage and no injuries. In December 2025, Electrek reported that GAF Energy closed its San Jose plant, laid off 138 workers and moved all production to Georgetown, Texas. Electrek did not report that the product was withdrawn, so ask the installer about supply and warranty support before you sign.

CertainTeed solar

CertainTeed's solar page, checked October 10, 2026, still shows its Solstice solar systems and SunStyle as current products. We did not find a current published price for either; Angi groups GAF and CertainTeed together at as little as $21 per square foot.

Solar roof vs a new roof plus solar panels

For most houses the comparison that matters now is solar shingles against a regular new roof with panels on top. The figures below come from different guides, so add the roof and panel lines yourself rather than reading them as one quote.

Fixr says solar shingles cost about twice as much as panels and convert less of the sun into power: 15% to 20% for shingles against 19% to 22% for monocrystalline panels. Is there still a tax credit for a solar roof?

Not the federal one. The IRS says the Residential Clean Energy Credit is not available for any property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Solar roofing tiles and solar shingles did qualify before that date, because they make power, while ordinary roofing did not. A solar roof or solar shingle job placed in service in 2026 does not qualify for that credit. Some cost guides published in 2026 still mention it, so check any savings figure a seller quotes against the IRS page.

Tesla Solar Roof warranty and repair concerns

Roofing Contractor reports that several installers said Tesla indicated existing installations keep warranty and service support. Tesla's Solar Roof limited warranty, in the version effective May 28, 2021, runs 25 years for defects in the tiles. Power output must stay at 95% or more of rated peak at year 5, then drop no more than 0.5% a year for the next 20 years. Weatherization is covered for 25 years, but only years 1 to 10 get full remedies; years 11 to 25 are prorated and do not cover labor.

Read the exclusions before anyone touches the roof. The warranty does not cover the installer's workmanship or materials like underlayment, damage from hail, wind gusts over 139 mph, or corrosion within 1,500 feet of salt water. It also excludes installation, removal or repair by anyone other than Tesla. If your Solar Roof leaks or stops producing, call Tesla energy support first (the warranty lists (888) 765-2489) with photos, your address and the install date.

The longer worry is service. Contractors told Roofing Contractor that troubleshooting a Solar Roof is harder than regular solar because of the many electrical connections, and one asked how easy storm-damaged tiles will be to get in 5 or 10 years. Electrek also reports owners who waited months for service with the system producing nothing.

Who installs solar on a new roof now

Tesla still sells regular solar panels, per Electrek, and the Powerwall cost page covers its battery. Solar shingles from GAF or CertainTeed are the other route.
