Solar and Roofing Companies: $200 to $600 a Panel, 1 or 2?
The solar half of a reroof costs $200 to $300 per panel to detach and reset in Fixr's national figure (2025) and $275 to $600 in 2026 regional quotes, whether one company does both jobs or the roofer brings in a solar crew.
Either way the job runs the same: about 1 to 2 days to remove the array, the new roof, then 2 to 3 days to reinstall (Fixr). The question that matters most is who warrants the roof penetrations afterward.
A solar and roofing company is a contractor that can both replace a roof and detach and reset a solar array on the same job, either because it holds roofing and electrical or solar credentials itself or because it brings a solar subcontractor under one contract.
One company or two
| One company does both | Roofer plus a solar contractor | |
|---|---|---|
| Contracts | One | Two, or one with a subcontractor |
| Scheduling | Handled internally | You or the roofer coordinate the gap between detach and reset |
| Leak at a mount afterward | One company to call | Agree in writing beforehand who warrants the penetrations |
| Who does the solar work | Its own solar crew or a subcontractor | A licensed solar or electrical contractor |
| Example | Sunrun bundles roofing through its partner Remi Roofing | Many roofers subcontract the detach and reset to a specialty solar crew |

Leak, damage or a roof that needs work? Call the roof line. A local roofing company answers and quotes its visit fee before anything is booked.
Fixr's guidance is that only certified solar professionals should remove or reinstall panels and a licensed roofer should do the roof, and that the roofer is usually not the panel company. NRCA recommends qualified roofers and licensed electricians on any roof with solar. Whether one company or two, the solar half needs the license your state requires for solar electrical work; the state rules table lists it.
How the job runs
- Before
Paperwork
Lessor sign-off if leased, electrical permit, monitoring account in your name, photos of the layout and per-panel output.
- 1 to 2 days
Detach
Solar crew shuts the system down, labels and removes panels, racking and wiring, and stores them.
- Roofer
New roof
Roofer tears off and replaces the roof. Some manufacturers set a wait before reinstall (Tesla: 30 days).
- 2 to 3 days
Reset
Solar crew installs new flashing at every mount, the racking, the panels and the wiring.
- After
Inspect and restart
Inspection where the city requires it, then recommissioning and a check that output matches the photos.
Tesla adds two timing details for its own systems: permits "can take up to two months on average," and after a reroof there is a 30-day wait with no further roof work before reinstall begins.
What detach and reset costs
Fixr puts removal, reinstall and inspection at $3,800 on average, $2,800 to $4,800 for 14 to 16 panels, or $200 to $300 per panel. HomeAdvisor gives higher and less consistent ranges.

Permits, rapid shutdown and code after reinstall
Many cities require an electrical permit to recommission a reinstalled system, and some require a final inspection. Whether an older system must be brought up to current code, such as rapid shutdown, depends on the local building department: some allow a reinstall in kind, others require upgrades. Ask the solar contractor what your city requires before you sign, because added hardware changes the price.
What removal does to equipment warranties
| Manufacturer | What the warranty says about removal and reinstall |
|---|---|
| Enphase (IQ8) | Labor to uninstall or reinstall is not covered. Damage from improper handling, or from service by anyone other than Enphase, is excluded. |
| SolarEdge | Removal and reinstall labor is the buyer's cost. Products must be reinstalled and handled according to SolarEdge's installation procedures. |
| Tesla | If you hire your own contractor, any existing system warranty may be voided, and Tesla is not responsible for third-party workmanship. |

Questions to ask a solar and roofing contractor
- Who does the solar work: your crew or a subcontractor, and what license does it hold?
- Who warrants the roof penetrations after the reinstall, for how many years, in writing?
- Who pulls the electrical permit, and does the city require current code on reinstall?
- Where are the panels stored, and who pays if one is damaged?
- Will you photograph the layout and per-panel output before removal and match it after?
- If the system is leased, have you received the lessor's sign-off?
Insurance-funded roof work is not handled through this site's call lines. Florida bars referral payments on it and other states restrict how contractors handle claims. The storm guide covers how to hire directly. For general information, Fixr reports that most policies cover removal and reinstallation in a covered roof claim.
What rapid shutdown means for an older system
Rapid shutdown is a National Electrical Code rule, section 690.12, that protects firefighters from energized solar wiring on a roof. The 2014 code required array-level shutdown: conductors more than 10 feet from the array had to drop to 30 volts within 10 seconds. The 2017 code moved to module-level shutdown: inside a boundary one foot around the array, conductors must drop to 80 volts within 30 seconds, effective January 1, 2019. The 2020 and 2023 codes keep that limit or allow a listed hazard control system. A system installed before 2019 may not meet it.
Whether a reinstall has to be brought up to the current code depends on your city. Wheaton, Illinois, for example, requires reinstalled arrays to comply with the currently adopted code unless the building official approves otherwise in writing. Ask the permitting office before the roof job, because added rapid shutdown hardware changes the quote.

Questions people ask
Do roofers remove solar panels?
Some companies do both, but many roofers subcontract the detach and reset to a solar crew. Fixr says only certified solar professionals should remove or reinstall panels.
How long does it take to remove and reinstall solar panels for a new roof?
About 1 to 2 days to remove and 2 to 3 days to reinstall, per Fixr, plus the roofing work and any permit or manufacturer wait. Tesla requires 30 days after a reroof before reinstall.
How much does detach and reset cost?
$200 to $300 per panel nationally, or about $3,800 on average for a 14 to 16 panel system, per Fixr. Regional quotes in 2026 run $275 to $600 per panel.
Does removing solar panels void the warranty?
Not by itself for Enphase or SolarEdge, but removal labor is not covered and damage from improper handling is excluded. Tesla says hiring your own contractor may void the system warranty.
Is it better to hire one company for roof and solar?
One company means one contract and one call if a mount leaks later. Two companies can work well if the contract says in writing who warrants the penetrations.
Does reinstalling solar panels require rapid shutdown?
It may. NEC 690.12 has required module-level rapid shutdown since 2019, and some cities require reinstalled arrays to meet the current code. Ask your permitting office before the work.
How do I find a roofing and solar company near me?
Call the roof line on this page, or ask any roofer you are considering whether it does its own detach and reset or uses a solar subcontractor, and who warrants the mounts afterward.
