A roofing license is the state credential a contractor needs before it can contract for roof work on a home. Some states license roofers, some only register them, some require a license only above a dollar amount, and some leave it to cities.

Need a roofer now? Call the roof line, then ask the company for its license or registration number before anyone climbs a ladder.
States with no state roofing license
12 states have no statewide roofing license: Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas, Wyoming. In these states the city or county may still license or register roofers and require a permit, so ask the local building department, and check insurance and references more carefully, because no state board stands behind the roofer.
States that require a license only above a dollar amount
In Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin, a state license applies only to jobs above a set dollar amount or to some kinds of work; smaller repairs fall below it. Several states that do license roofers also exempt small jobs, usually when labor and materials stay under a set amount and no permit is needed. California's line is $1,000 since January 1, 2025, Arizona's is $1,000, and Hawaii's is $1,500. A job that needs a permit needs a licensed roofer in all three, whatever it costs.
How to check a roofer's license
- Ask for the license or registration number in writing, on the estimate.
- Look it up on the state's site using the link in the table. Match the business name and check that the status is active.
- Check that the class covers roofing. A general or handyman credential may not, and Florida requires a roofing license for reroofs.
- Ask for the certificate of insurance, sent from the insurer, not the roofer.
- If your state has no roofing license, call the city building department and ask whether the roofer is registered and whether the job needs a permit.
Insurance claims and roofing contracts
Several states have roofing laws aimed at storm and insurance work. Florida bars roofers from offering anything of value to get you to file a claim, Texas bars waiving or rebating your deductible, and Colorado requires a written contract and lets you cancel within 72 hours after your insurer denies the claim. The roof line on this site is for work you pay for yourself; for a claim, call your insurer first. The roof repair guide covers what repairs cost and how to choose a roofer, and the electrician license table covers the electrical side.
