Breaker Keeps Tripping? 3 Causes, Replacement $150 to $250
A circuit breaker trips because of an overloaded circuit, a short circuit or a ground fault, Angi's 2026 guide says, and replacing a worn breaker costs $150 to $250 in This Old House's 2026 guide.
Unplug everything on the circuit and reset it one time; if it trips again, will not reset, or is hot or scorched, stop and call an electrician.

Power out, a breaker that will not reset, or an outlet that is warm or dead? Call the electrician line. A local electrician answers and quotes the service call first.
A breaker keeps tripping when it shuts off a circuit again and again to stop too much current, a short or a leak to ground. Finding the cause can cost nothing; replacing the breaker runs $150 to $250 in This Old House's 2026 guide.
Why does my breaker keep tripping
Angi's electricians list five causes:
- Overload. The most common cause: more devices running on the circuit than it is rated for. High-wattage appliances on one circuit are the usual culprit.
- Short circuit. A hot wire touches a neutral. Signs include melted insulation or a burning smell.
- Ground fault. Current leaks to ground. This is common in damp areas.
- Outdated wiring. Mainly in homes built before 1960.
- A faulty breaker or panel. Breakers wear out, and some panel brands have a poor record.
Some breakers are built to trip on less. A GFCI cuts power when the current going out and coming back differ by even a slight amount, and an AFCI trips on arcing. ESFI says arcing faults cause more than 30,000 home fires a year, and CPSC estimates AFCIs could prevent more than half of them. When a GFCI or AFCI breaker trips, it has usually found a fault somewhere on the circuit.
ESFI's overload warning signs: flickering or dimming lights, frequent trips, warm or discolored wall plates, crackling, sizzling or buzzing from outlets, a burning odor, and mild shocks.
How to reset a breaker: do this now
To reset a breaker, unplug everything on the circuit, push the handle fully to OFF and then back to ON, one time only; Bob Vila warns that resetting it again and again risks an arc flash. Do not touch the panel at all if it is hot, wet, buzzing or smells of burning.
- Find the tripped breaker in the panel. Its handle sits in the middle or the off position.
- Unplug or switch off everything on that circuit.
- Reset it one time: push the handle fully off, then back on. Bob Vila warns that resetting over and over risks an arc flash.
- Plug things back in one at a time. If it trips when one appliance comes on, plug that appliance into a circuit in another room. If that breaker trips too, the appliance likely has a short, per Bob Vila.
- If the cause was overload, move a high-wattage appliance to a different circuit, as Angi advises.
Do not take the panel cover off, replace a breaker yourself, or put in a larger breaker to stop the trips. A breaker is sized to protect the wire behind it.
Is it an emergency? When to stop and call an electrician
It is an emergency when the breaker or panel is hot, scorched, buzzing or smells of burning: with smoke or a strong burning smell, leave and call 911. A breaker that trips again after one reset with everything unplugged is not an emergency, but it needs an electrician, not more resets.
- It trips again after one reset with everything unplugged.
- It will not reset, or the handle feels loose.
- The breaker or panel is hot, scorched, buzzing, or smells of burning. With smoke or a strong burning smell, leave and call 911.
- You see melted insulation, or suspect a short or ground fault.
- The house is old, the wiring is original, or the panel is a Federal Pacific or Zinsco.
A trip with heat, smell or sound is a same-night call; the emergency electrician page covers after-hours rates and who to call first.

Breaker trips again after one reset with everything unplugged? Call the electrician line and say which circuit it is and what was running.
The breaker itself is cheap; most of the bill is the visit and the diagnosis. When the circuit is overloaded rather than faulty, the fix is usually a new dedicated circuit for the heavy load, at $250 to $900 in HomeGuide's guide. For other common repair prices, see electrical repair costs.
Outlet not working? Check these first
- Look for a tripped GFCI outlet in the same room or nearby. ESFI says the electrical code requires GFCIs in kitchens, bathrooms, garages and outdoors. One GFCI can also protect other outlets on the same circuit, so press its reset button.
- Check the panel for a tripped breaker.
- Plug in a lamp you know works, to rule out the device.
- If the outlet is warm, discolored, buzzing or smells burnt, stop using it and call.
A reset costs nothing. If the outlet still does not work, HomeGuide prices outlet repair or replacement at $80 to $200. Angi puts the national average at $130, a GFCI outlet repair at $100 to $300, and an outlet with burn marks or a burning smell at $120 to $400.
Half the house without power
If the breakers are all on and about half the house is still dead, the cause may be outside. Lee Company, a home services contractor, explains that power arrives on two legs, and losing one at the street leaves about half the house without power: the oven will not heat and the central air will not start. Call the utility first if neighbors are affected.
If lights dim or flash when big appliances start, that can mean a loose neutral, which Lee Company says is not a DIY fix. Call an electrician, and treat burning smells, scorching or buzzing as urgent.
When the panel is the problem
A breaker that trips for no reason, or never trips at all, can point to the panel. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels have a record of breakers that fail to trip, and the usual advice is to replace the panel rather than the breakers; electrical panel upgrade cost covers both brands and the prices. A panel that is simply full is also a reason to upgrade before adding an EV charger.
If the breaker that trips feeds a rooftop solar inverter, the cause may be in the solar equipment; see solar technician or electrician. Calls to the electrician line go to an independent company that serves your area and takes this kind of job; how calls work explains the rest.
Reset it once, unplugged everything, and it still trips? Call the electrician line with the panel brand if you can read it.
If a single outlet is dead but the breaker is on, the cause is often a tripped GFCI elsewhere on the circuit; GFCI outlets and outlets not working walks through it.

Questions people ask
Why does my breaker keep tripping?
Angi lists overload as the most common cause, followed by a short circuit, a ground fault, outdated wiring (mainly pre-1960 homes) and a faulty breaker or panel. GFCI and AFCI breakers also trip on small faults by design.
Is it safe to keep resetting a breaker?
No. Reset it once with everything on the circuit unplugged. Bob Vila warns that repeated resets risk an arc flash; if it trips again, call an electrician.
How much does it cost to replace a circuit breaker?
$150 to $250 in This Old House's 2026 guide. HomeGuide puts a single-pole breaker at $100 to $180 installed, a double-pole at $180 to $260 and a main breaker at $200 to $600.
Why is my outlet not working when the breaker is not tripped?
Look for a tripped GFCI outlet nearby and press reset, since one GFCI can protect other outlets. If that fails, HomeGuide puts outlet repair or replacement at $80 to $200.
Why is half my house without power?
Power arrives on two legs, and losing one leaves about half the house dead, per Lee Company. If the breakers are on and neighbors are affected, call the utility first.
Can a bad appliance trip a breaker?
Yes. Plug it into a circuit in another room; if that breaker trips too, Bob Vila says the appliance likely has a short.
Can a circuit breaker go bad?
Yes. Angi lists a faulty breaker or panel among the causes of repeated trips. HomeGuide puts a standard single-pole breaker at $5 to $30 as a part and $100 to $180 installed.
How do you reset a circuit breaker?
Unplug everything on the circuit, find the breaker whose handle sits in the middle or off position, push it fully to off, then back on, one time. Plug things back in one at a time. If it trips again, stop resetting it (Bob Vila warns of arc flash) and call an electrician.
What causes a circuit breaker to trip?
An overloaded circuit is the most common cause, followed by a short circuit, a ground fault, outdated wiring and a worn breaker or panel, according to Angi.
