Do this now: garage door stuck or broken in Los Angeles
- Leave the door where it is, ideally closed, and keep people and pets out from under it. Chamberlain warns a door with weak or broken springs may fall fast and without warning.
- Look at the springs and cables from the floor without touching them. HomeGuide lists a gap in the coil and slack or loose cables as signs of a broken spring.
- Do not loosen brackets or handle cables. DASMA says cables should be replaced only by a trained technician.
- Power out? Openers sold or installed in California since July 1, 2019 must have a battery backup under SB 969. If yours will not run, leave the door closed until power returns or a technician arrives.
- Door will not close and the opener lights flash? Check that nothing blocks the safety sensors near the floor.
- Ask for the service call fee and any same-day surcharge before anyone is sent.
Garage door repair in Los Angeles is fixing springs, cables, rollers, tracks, panels or the opener of a residential garage door. HomeGuide's 2026 national range is $150 to $350 for most repairs, and California requires a contractor's license on jobs of $1,000 or more.
Is it an emergency? When an LA garage door cannot wait
A garage door is an emergency when it is stuck open and the house cannot be secured, or when a car you need is trapped behind a door with a broken spring. Fixr says same-day emergency service adds $100 to $300 to the bill. A door that is closed and safe can wait for a next-day visit at the regular rate. Never try to lift a door with a broken spring by hand.
California's opener battery backup law (SB 969)
Every residential automatic garage door opener sold or installed in California since July 1, 2019 must have a battery backup that works during a power outage. SB 969 added Health and Safety Code 19892 and set a civil penalty of $1,000 per opener for selling or installing one without it.
That matters in Los Angeles, where wind and fire weather cut power to large areas. In the January 2025 windstorm, about 92,000 LADWP and 314,000 SCE customers lost power at one point, Renewable Energy World reported. If your opener predates the law, ask the repair company to price a replacement opener with battery backup along with the repair.
Who can repair a garage door in California: CSLB D-28 and the $1,000 rule
California licenses garage door work under the CSLB D-28 classification, Doors, Gates and Activating Devices, which covers installing, modifying or repairing all types of residential, commercial and industrial doors, including overhead and sliding door assemblies. Since January 1, 2025, a license is required for any job of $1,000 or more, counting labor, materials and all other costs, CSLB says; the exemption below that applies only if the worker hires no employees and no permit is needed. Check any license on CSLB's Check A License page.
A spring or cable job is usually well under $1,000, so the license rule may not apply, but it is still worth asking. The national garage door repair guide lists the scam warning signs consumer agencies publish. The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule does not cover emergency repairs or repairs you asked the seller to come for, though extra items sold beyond your request are covered.
Older LA garages and safety reversing
Many Los Angeles homes predate today's opener safety rules. The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey puts the median Los Angeles home at 1965, and the city's 2021 demographic profile counts 19.7% of homes built in 1939 or earlier. The CPSC says openers made after January 1, 1991 have reversing systems, external entrapment protection such as an electric eye was added in 1993, and you should test the door monthly with a 2x4 laid flat in its path: if it does not reverse, disconnect the opener until it is repaired or replaced.
