Insulated garage doors: R-value and cost
An insulated garage door costs $750 to $1,900 for a single door and $1,500 to $3,700 or more for a double in HomeGuide's 2025 guide. HomeAdvisor prices the insulated upgrade at $600 to $3,000. If the garage has no outlet near the ceiling, an electrician adds one; see electrical repair. The opener choice is covered in garage door opener repair and installation. DASMA, the door industry's trade group, recommends that trained technicians install garage doors and says novices who try should follow the manufacturer's instructions closely.

Wind-rated garage doors in Florida and Texas
Wind-rated garage doors cost more, and HomeGuide notes local codes may require them. In two of our states the rules have money attached:
- Texas coast. TWIA says Texas Insurance Code chapter 2210 requires coastal property to be certified as meeting windstorm building codes, and lists garage doors among the work that needs a certificate. The Texas Department of Insurance issues the certificates (WPI-8); without one TWIA may treat the property as ineligible. Clopay, a door maker, says doors in the 14 coastal counties of the TWIA catastrophe area need TDI product evaluation approval and a TDI-registered installer. Ask the installer how the certificate will be filed.
- Florida. My Safe Florida Home, run by the Florida Department of Financial Services, offers a wind mitigation inspection first and grants of up to $10,000 for approved upgrades, including garage door reinforcement. Grant availability can change, so check the program's site before you sign a contract. The roof inspection guide covers Florida wind mitigation reports, and window replacement cost covers impact windows.
After a hurricane, check the state rules in storm damage contractor laws by state before you sign. A door damaged by a storm may be part of an insurance claim; call your insurer before you replace it, and do not sign over the claim to a contractor.
California: battery backup on the opener
In California, a new garage door cannot be connected to an existing opener that lacks a backup battery. SB 969 has required battery backup on openers sold or installed since July 1, 2019, regardless of the opener's age, with a $1,000 civil penalty per violation. Budget for a new opener or a backup if yours predates the law.
Garage door installation near me: what to ask before you book
- The exact door. Make, model, size, material, insulation type and R-value, and wind rating where it applies, all in writing.
- What is included. Removal and disposal of the old door, new tracks and springs, the permit, and whether the opener is reused or replaced.
- Deposit and payment. Ask what deposit is due and when the balance is due, and get it in the contract. The garage door repair guide lists scam warning signs, including requests for cash up front.
- License and insurance. Ask for the license number and proof of insurance and check them yourself. Rules vary by state and city.
- Safety check at the end. Ask the installer to balance the door and run the auto-reverse test with a 2x4 on the floor before they leave.
Ask whether the quote includes new springs; garage door spring replacement explains the cycle ratings to ask about. Doors are one line on the home repair costs table. Calls go to an independent company that serves your area and takes this kind of job. How calls work.
