Garage Door Off Track: $100 to $350 Repair, Stop Using It
Putting a garage door back on its track costs $100 to $300 in Fixr's guide and $200 to $350 in HomeGuide's 2026 guide, and HomeAdvisor says damage to the track itself pushes the bill closer to $400.
Stop using the door now: Clopay says to stop operating an off-track door immediately, and the springs and cables that hold it up are under heavy tension.

Is an off-track garage door an emergency? The danger signs
Treat it as one until a technician has seen it. The door is held up by springs and cables under heavy tension, and once rollers leave the track nothing guides it. Raynor Door Company, an Illinois door dealer, says an off-track door weighs 150 to 250 pounds and can fall without warning. Clopay, a door maker, says to stop operating it immediately.
- Stop now and keep everyone clear: the door hangs crooked, a roller is outside the track, a cable is slack or off its drum, or a panel is folded. Do not run the opener, do not push the door, and do not pull the red release cord. Chamberlain says to use the release only when the door is fully closed, because with weak or broken springs the door may fall rapidly and without warning.
- Unplug the opener so nobody runs it from a remote or the car. Family Handyman gives that reason for unplugging before any track work.
- Call today: the door is stuck open and the house is not secure, or the only car is trapped inside.
- Can wait for a weekday slot: the door is still in its tracks but grinds, rubs or jerks. HomeAdvisor says to book service as soon as you hear grinding or see uneven movement, before it gets worse.
A garage door is off track when one or more of its rollers have left the metal track that guides the door up and down; HomeGuide puts track realignment after a door comes off at $200 to $350 in its 2026 guide.
Why you should not force an off-track garage door
Each try with the opener makes the job bigger. Raynor Door Company says to not force it back on track and not keep running the opener, because each cycle can pull more rollers loose, bend the track, or strain the cables and springs. It also warns that levering rollers back into the rail by hand can bend the track and crack more rollers.
The parts that hold the door up are the dangerous ones. HomeAdvisor says springs hold hundreds of pounds of tension. DASMA, the door makers' trade group, says cables should be replaced only by a trained technician because of that tension, and that brackets should be adjusted or loosened only by a trained door systems technician. Angi's cable guide adds that if a cable breaks while the door is raised, the door may fall suddenly.
What knocks a garage door off its track?
Raynor Door Company lists six common causes and calls a broken cable one of the most common triggers:
- Impact. Raynor says bumping the door with a vehicle, even at low speed, can knock a section or roller out of alignment and bend the track.
- A broken cable. When the cable on one side snaps or slips off its drum, Raynor says, that side drops, the door lifts unevenly and it pulls rollers out of the track. The garage door cable repair guide covers that job on its own.
- Worn or broken rollers. Angi says rollers last 10 to 20 years with care and six to 10 years under heavy use, and lists cracking, chipping, bending, rattling and grinding as signs they are failing.
- Loose track brackets. The brackets that hold the track to the wall loosen over time, and a shifted track lets rollers slip out.
- Something in the track. Clopay tells owners to check the tracks for bends, dents and obstructions.
- Track misalignment over time. Raynor says vibration from thousands of cycles gradually pulls the horizontal track out of alignment, and The Home Depot says the track can malfunction once it goes out of alignment.
A weak spring makes all of these worse. Raynor says an unbalanced door puts uneven stress on the rollers, and the CPSC says a balanced door stays put when stopped partway open; one that drifts should be serviced by a professional. If you heard a bang before the door went crooked, read garage door spring repair first.
How to tell if your garage door is off track
- The door looks crooked or uneven in the opening. Clopay says an off-track door usually jams and looks that way as it tries to move.
- The door opens partway and stops. Family Handyman lists that as the sign of a roller that came off the track or an overhead track that is out of line.
- One or more rollers sit outside the track, or the track is visibly bent.
- Uneven or erratic movement, which HomeGuide's cable guide lists as a sign of a cable problem.
- Scraping, popping or grinding as the door moves.
Garage door off track repair cost by part
The base job, putting the door back in its track and setting the track true, runs $100 to $300 in Fixr's guide and $200 to $350 in HomeGuide's. Expect the bill to grow when the derailment damaged something on the way out. HomeAdvisor says track damage pushes a repair closer to $400, and Fixr adds $100 to $300 for a same-day visit.

Prices for parts often replaced along with an off-track repair. National figures; HomeGuide's two pages and Fixr's are shown side by side.
A standard residential door has 10 to 12 rollers, Angi says, and nylon rollers cost $10 to $20 each in materials against $15 to $30 for steel. If a few rollers cracked, ask whether replacing the full set costs much more than the broken ones; labor is most of the bill. HomeAdvisor says a quick service call for a simple fix can cost $50 to $75, and This Old House puts the service call fee at $50 to $75, usually waived once you approve the repair.
What a technician does to fix an off-track garage door
- Secures the door so it cannot drop, and disconnects the opener.
- Checks the springs, cables and bottom brackets before touching the track. HomeGuide's complete cable overhaul, $200 to $400, includes inspecting the springs, drums and pulleys.
- Loosens the track, sets the rollers back in, and realigns the track. The Home Depot describes that step as loosening the track screws, tapping the track into line with a rubber mallet and checking it with a level.
- Replaces cracked rollers, a bent track section or a frayed cable.
- Balances the door and runs it through full cycles. HomeGuide's standard tune-up includes a balance test to confirm the door opens and closes evenly.
- Tests the auto-reverse. The CPSC says to lay a 2x4 flat in the door's path; if the door does not reverse, disconnect the opener until it is fixed.
Repair the track or replace the garage door?
Almost every off-track door is a repair. Replacement comes up when the impact also crushed panels. HomeGuide prices one sectional panel at $300 to $900 and says replacing the whole door may be more cost effective when several panels are damaged or problems keep coming back; its full replacement range is $700 to $2,700 for a single door and $1,000 to $3,500 for a double. See garage door panel replacement and garage door installation cost.
Garage door stuck: is it off track or something else?
A stuck garage door is not always a derailment. Clopay's list of reasons a door gets stuck runs from something blocking the path and dirty safety sensors to broken springs, a frozen bottom seal, a failed opener, worn rollers and bent tracks. If the door sits straight and level but will not move, start with why a garage door won't open. If it is stuck up and refuses to come down, the garage door won't close guide walks through the sensor and limit checks. In winter, Clopay says ice and snow can seal the bottom of the door or freeze the tracks, and you should never force the door open.
Questions to ask before you book an off-track repair
- Is the visit fee credited to the repair, and what is the after-hours fee if I need someone today?
- Will you check the springs, cables and bottom brackets, and tell me before replacing any of them?
- Is the price for realignment only, or does it include rollers and a bent track section?
- Will you run the 2x4 auto-reverse test before you leave?
- Where my state or city licenses this work, what is your license number, and can I see proof of insurance?
Massachusetts consumer regulators warn about garage door scammers who use names similar to known businesses, show up in unmarked vans, and ask for money up front, especially in cash. Compare any quote with the table above. Prices for every other garage door job are on garage door repair cost.

Garage door off track: what to do now
- Stop using the door. Do not press the remote or wall button again.
- Unplug the opener so nobody runs it by accident.
- Keep people, pets and cars out from under the door and away from its edges.
- Leave the emergency release alone unless the door is fully closed.
- Take photos of the track, rollers and cables from the floor, without touching them.
- If it is stuck open, move valuables out of the garage or lock the door from the garage into the house.
- Call and describe what you see: which side, how many rollers are out, and whether a cable is hanging loose.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to put a garage door back on track?
Fixr prices an off-track repair at $100 to $300, and HomeGuide puts track realignment after a door comes off at $200 to $350 (2026). HomeAdvisor says a damaged track pushes the repair closer to $400, and a same-day visit adds $100 to $300 in Fixr's figures.
Can I still use my garage door if it is off track?
No. Clopay says to stop operating an off-track door immediately, and Raynor Door Company says each cycle can pull more rollers loose and strain the cables and springs. Unplug the opener and leave the door where it is.
What causes a garage door to come off track?
Raynor Door Company lists impact damage, a broken cable, worn or broken rollers, loose track brackets, an obstruction in the track and misalignment over time. A weak spring makes it worse because an unbalanced door stresses the rollers unevenly.
Can I put a garage door back on track myself?
It is not a safe homeowner job. DASMA says cables should be replaced only by a trained technician and brackets adjusted only by a trained door systems technician because of spring tension, and Raynor Door Company says forcing rollers back can bend the track and crack more rollers.
How do I know if my garage door is off track?
Clopay says an off-track door usually jams and looks crooked or uneven. Family Handyman says a door that opens partway and stops often has a roller out of the track or a misaligned overhead track. Rollers sitting outside the rail confirm it.
Why is my garage door stuck?
Clopay lists obstructions, dirty or misaligned sensors, broken springs, an off-track door, ice, a failed opener, worn rollers and bent tracks. A crooked door points to the track or a cable; a level door that will not move points to the spring or opener.
How much do garage door rollers cost to replace?
Angi puts roller replacement at $150 to $250 for parts and labor, with an average of $200 (October 2026). Fixr lists $100 to $150. A standard door has 10 to 12 rollers.
