The guides count different things. HomeGuide's $1,200 to $3,000 includes the charger itself, which it prices at $450 to $1,000. If a quote looks high, ask whether the charger is in it.

Level 2 charger installation cost: what moves the price

  • Distance from the panel. A charger on the garage wall behind the panel is the cheap case. A run to a detached garage or the far side of the driveway adds wire and labor; HomeGuide prices wiring at $6 to $8 per foot.
  • Panel capacity. If the panel has no space or the service cannot carry the load, a panel upgrade at $800 to $2,000 (Angi) or a full service upgrade comes first.
  • Charger or outlet. A hardwired charger costs $450 to $1,000 for the unit in HomeGuide's guide. A 240 volt outlet for a plug-in charger is cheaper to install.
  • Walls and finish. Running wire through an unfinished garage is quicker than fishing it through finished walls.
  • Permit and inspection. Angi puts the permit at $100 to $200.

NEMA 14-50 outlet installation

A NEMA 14-50 is a 240 volt, 50 amp outlet, and a common way to plug in a portable Level 2 charger. No cost guide prices it by name. The closest is Angi's 240 volt outlet at $175 to $300 (average $220), a range that most likely assumes a short run near the panel. This Old House puts wiring a 240 volt outlet at $200 to $400. A long run to a detached garage costs more.

Either way, the outlet needs its own circuit from the panel. Ask the electrician whether a hardwired charger or an outlet makes more sense for your car and your garage before you buy the hardware.

Tesla Wall Connector installation

A Tesla Wall Connector is a hardwired Level 2 charger, so installing one is the same job as any other hardwired unit: a dedicated 240 volt circuit, a breaker in the panel, and usually a permit. The cost guides we checked do not price it separately, so the Level 2 figures above apply: $1,200 to $3,000 with the charger in HomeGuide's guide, or $750 to $2,000 for labor alone. If you have or plan a home battery, have the electrician plan both together; the Tesla Powerwall cost page has the battery prices.

Does my panel have room for an EV charger?

Qmerit reports more than 770,000 charger installs and more than 86,000 panel upgrades, so a panel upgrade comes with some jobs, not every one. The electrician checks two things: whether the panel has physical space for a two-pole breaker, and whether the service can carry the extra load.

If it cannot, the options are a panel upgrade ($800 to $2,000 in Angi's EV guide, more for a full service upgrade) or a smart panel that manages the load. SPAN markets its panel as a way to avoid a service upgrade for an EV charger, with hardware starting at $2,550 before installation. Electrical panel upgrade cost has the full price list for 100 to 200 amp and 400 amp jobs.

Panel already full, or an older 100 amp service? Call the electrician line and ask for the charger and the panel work quoted on the same visit.

Permits and who can install an EV charger

An EV charger circuit is electrical work, and many places require a permit; Angi puts permits at $100 to $200. State contractor rules apply too. In California, a CSLB C-10 electrical contractor license is required for jobs of $500 or more in labor and materials, and electricians working for C-10 contractors must hold state certification. In Arizona, the Registrar of Contractors requires a licensed contractor (R-11 for residential electrical) when labor and materials exceed $1,000 or a permit is needed. The electrical repair guide lists the rules for Texas, Florida, Nevada and Colorado.

Home EV charger installation near me: questions to ask

  1. Is the quote for a hardwired charger or an outlet, and is the charger included?
  2. How long is the wire run, and is the wire in the price?
  3. Does my panel have space and capacity, and how did you check?
  4. Who pulls the permit and schedules the inspection?
  5. What is your license number and class?
  6. If the panel needs an upgrade, can you quote it on the same visit?

If a new charger trips its breaker after installation, that is a call back to the installer; breaker keeps tripping explains why breakers trip. Charging from rooftop solar?
