Solar Panel Maintenance Cost: $300 to $850 a Year (2026)

A professional maintenance plan costs $300 to $850 a year in published ranges (Fixr, Angi, HomeGuide), Enphase Care is $399 a year, and a one-off annual inspection is $150 to $350.

Typical price range$300 to $850 a year

Most systems need only the annual inspection plus cleaning when production drops; the inverter, wiring and roof mounts are what actually need attention.

Definition

Solar panel maintenance is the periodic inspection, cleaning and minor repair that keeps a home solar system producing at its rated output, costing $300 to $850 a year for a professional plan in published ranges, though most systems need only an annual check and occasional cleaning.

Owned or leased?

If you lease your system or have a power purchase agreement, the financing company owns it and is responsible for this work; call the servicer on your statement (SunStrong for Sunnova and legacy SunPower, Renewbrook for most PosiGen leases). The rest of this page is for owners of cash and loan systems. The owned vs leased guide explains the difference.

How much does solar panel maintenance cost

An annual maintenance plan runs $300 to $700 (Fixr), $390 to $720 (Angi, May 2026) or $300 to $850 (HomeGuide). Manufacturer and service-company plans are priced differently: Enphase Care is $399 a year, EnergyAid membership is $108 to $588 a year by tier, and Solar Insure's SolarDetect monitoring is $19.99 a month. Cleaning on its own is $150 to $500 per visit, or $10 to $35 per panel.

Do solar panels need maintenance

Less than most owners expect. Panels have no moving parts, rain cleans them in most climates, and manufacturers warrant their output for 25 years. What does need attention: the inverter (the component that fails first), wiring and connectors (heat, rodents and UV), roof penetrations (the most common leak source), and the monitoring gateway. An annual inspection catches these; a cleaning is worth paying for only in dry, dusty or pollen-heavy regions where production visibly drops.

Solar panel maintenance when the installer is out of business

Most installers bundled 'free maintenance' into the sale, and that promise ended with the company. The replacement is a service plan from a manufacturer (Enphase Care for Enphase systems), a service company (EnergyAid, NuWatt and regional operators), or an annual inspection from any licensed solar contractor. Pick the plan that includes the truck roll: Enphase Care covers on-site labor in all 50 states, while monitoring-only plans tell you something is wrong and leave the repair to you. If your installer is gone, check the bankruptcy tracker for who holds your account, then come back here for the repair.

Solar panel maintenance near me

Any licensed solar contractor can maintain a system it did not install; ask before booking whether it takes systems from other installers. The annual inspection is the service to buy; it costs $150 to $350 and the report is what a buyer, an insurer or a lender asks for later. The inspection page covers what a good one includes.

Solar panel cleaning: is it worth it

Usually not on a tilted residential roof where it rains. In a 2013 UC San Diego study, panels that went 145 dry days through a California summer lost about 7.4% of their output, and washing a typical 5 kW home system halfway through summer would have added only about $20 of electricity. Cleaning pays when panels are flat, when bird droppings or pollen cover cells, or in dry, dusty places such as Phoenix and Las Vegas. HomeGuide puts a professional visit at $150 to $500. The solar panel cleaning guide covers prices, how often to clean, and the manufacturer rules that protect the warranty.

Solar panel maintenance service: choosing a company

A maintenance company should do more than wash glass. Ask whether the visit includes per-panel production readings, an inverter and error-log check, a look at roof penetrations and wiring, and a written report. A company that only cleans is a cleaning service; one that also checks the electrical side is doing maintenance.

Pigeons or squirrels under the array are a maintenance problem too: critter guard installation costs $400 to $2,500 and is usually done during a cleaning or inspection visit.

Questions people ask

Do solar panels need maintenance?

Very little. Panels have no moving parts and rain cleans them. An annual inspection of the inverter, wiring and roof mounts, plus cleaning when production drops, is enough for most systems.

How much does solar panel maintenance cost per year?

$300 to $850 for a professional plan in published ranges. An annual inspection alone is $150 to $350. Enphase Care is $399 a year and includes on-site labor.

How often should solar panels be cleaned?

Only when production shows soiling loss, typically every one to two years in dusty or pollen-heavy regions and rarely elsewhere. Cleaning costs $150 to $500 a visit.

What is included in solar panel maintenance?

Inspection of connections, torque, flashing and the inverter; per-panel production readings; cleaning; and minor repairs such as reseating connectors or clearing debris.

Who maintains my solar panels if the company went out of business?

Any licensed solar contractor, a service company such as EnergyAid or NuWatt, or a manufacturer plan such as Enphase Care. Installer-provided free maintenance ended with the installer.

Is Enphase Care worth it?

For an orphaned Enphase system, often yes: $399 a year covers Enphase-performed on-site labor for warranty swaps in all 50 states, which a contractor would otherwise bill at $150 to $350 per visit.

Is solar panel cleaning worth it?

Usually not on tilted roofs where it rains. UC San Diego found a summer's worth of dust cost about 7.4% of output and that a mid-summer wash was worth about $20 for a 5 kW system. Flat panels, heavy bird droppings and dusty dry climates are the exceptions.
