Tesla Powerwall Cost: $13,473 Installed (EnergySage 2026)

A Tesla Powerwall 3 costs about $13,473 installed, roughly $998 per kWh, in 2026 EnergySage Marketplace quotes before incentives.

Typical price range$9,000 to $12,000

Angi's 2026 range is $9,000 to $12,000, and retrofit labor alone runs $2,000 to $3,500. One unit stores 13.5 kWh, delivers up to 11.5 kW, and has a built-in solar inverter, so it can be added to existing solar or replace an aging string inverter. The 30% federal credit is not available for systems placed in service after 2025.

Tesla Powerwall cost is what a homeowner pays for a Powerwall 3 home battery installed, including the 13.5 kWh unit, its built-in solar inverter, the backup switch or gateway, labor, permit and utility interconnection, before state and utility incentives.

Published 2026 US figures, before state and utility incentives. Your quote depends on backup scope, panel upgrades and permits.

The spread comes from what is included. EnergySage's $13,473 is the average of real installer quotes for a complete Powerwall 3 job. Angi's and HomeAdvisor's lower figures are national estimates. A second Powerwall 3 or an Expansion unit adds storage; whole-home backup, a main panel upgrade or a long wire run adds labor. Ask for a quote that lists the unit, the backup switch or gateway, electrical work, permit and interconnection as separate lines.

Tesla Powerwall installation cost: what changes the price

  • Backup scope. Partial backup of a few circuits is the cheapest setup; whole-home backup needs the home's service sized for it and can add electrical work.
  • Your existing inverter. The Powerwall 3 has its own solar inverter with 6 inputs and room for 20 kW of panels, so on an older system with a failing string inverter the installer can wire the panels straight into the Powerwall and retire the old inverter. That can turn a $1,000 to $3,500 inverter replacement into part of the battery job; the inverter page has the replacement prices.
  • Number of units. One Powerwall 3 holds 13.5 kWh. Expansion units add 13.5 kWh each without a second inverter, up to three per Powerwall 3.
  • Permits and the utility. A battery needs an electrical permit and a utility interconnection approval almost everywhere. In Phoenix, batteries are excluded from the SolarAPP+ fast track and Phoenix Fire requires its own permit; in Las Vegas any system with a battery goes to full plan review.
  • Heat. Output may derate above 104°F, so in Phoenix and Las Vegas the installer should keep the unit out of afternoon sun or in the garage.

Adding a Powerwall to existing solar

Yes, a Powerwall 3 can be added to a system it did not come with. It connects on the AC side of the house, so it works alongside Enphase, SolarEdge, SMA or Fronius equipment without touching the original inverter, or it can take the panels directly through its own inverter when the old one is due for replacement. Four things to settle first:

  1. Own or lease. On a leased or PPA system the panels belong to the financing company, and SunStrong, Sunrun or the lessor on your statement must approve any battery tied into its equipment. Get that in writing before you buy.
  2. Net metering. In California, adding a battery counts toward the expansion limit (the greater of 1 kW or 10% of the original system) for keeping NEM 1.0 or 2.0; the Los Angeles and San Diego pages explain the rule. Other utilities have their own interconnection steps.
  3. The original installer is gone. That does not block a battery. The Powerwall installer takes over the electrical connection and the permit; your panels keep their own manufacturer warranties.
  4. Monitoring. The Powerwall shows solar production in the Tesla app once the installer adds a meter, which helps when the old installer's monitoring account is lost; see monitoring not working.

Tesla Powerwall installer: who installs one

Tesla sells and installs Powerwall directly in some areas and through Tesla Certified Installers everywhere else; Tesla's support site lists Certified Installers by zip code, including installers that only install a Powerwall bought elsewhere. Whoever does it needs a state electrical license for the wiring (the technician or electrician guide lists the rule by state). Before booking, ask whether the company is Tesla certified, whether it works on systems it did not install, who pulls the permit and files the utility interconnection, and what the quote includes.

Powerwall incentives in 2026

The 30% federal residential clean energy credit, which covered batteries of 3 kWh or more, is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025, so a Powerwall installed in 2026 is priced without it. Utility programs still pay for letting the utility draw on the battery: APS Storage Rewards pays a $110 per average kW bill credit each May-to-October season, SRP Battery Partner $55 per average kW twice a year, and CPS Energy's My Battery Rewards $10 per event in San Antonio. California's SGIP offers storage incentives while funds last. The Phoenix and San Antonio pages have the program details; most programs require the installer to enroll the battery.

Questions people ask

How much does a Tesla Powerwall cost?

About $13,473 installed for a Powerwall 3 in 2026 EnergySage Marketplace quotes, or $998 per kWh, before incentives. Angi's 2026 range is $9,000 to $12,000 installed.

How much does Tesla Powerwall installation cost?

Labor alone for a battery retrofit runs $2,000 to $3,500 (Angi, July 2026), at $100 to $200 an hour for Powerwall work. Whole-home backup, a panel upgrade or a long wire run adds to it.

Can I add a Powerwall to my existing solar panels?

Yes. A Powerwall 3 connects on the AC side and works with Enphase, SolarEdge, SMA or Fronius systems, or it can take the panels through its own inverter. A leased system needs the lessor's written approval first.

Can a Powerwall 3 replace my old solar inverter?

Often. It has 6 solar inputs and accepts up to 20 kW of panels, so an installer can wire an existing array into it and retire a failing string inverter.

Do I need a Tesla Certified Installer?

Tesla installs directly in some areas and uses Certified Installers elsewhere; its support site lists them by zip code. The installer also needs a state electrical license for the wiring.

Is there a tax credit for a Powerwall in 2026?

Not the federal one. The 30% residential clean energy credit is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Utility programs such as APS Storage Rewards, SRP Battery Partner and CPS My Battery Rewards still pay bill credits.

How long does a Powerwall last?

Tesla warrants the Powerwall 3 for 10 years, and EnergySage reports 70% of capacity retained at the end of the term.
