Solar Inverter Replacement Cost: $1,000 to $3,500 + Warranty
A string inverter replacement costs $1,000 to $3,500 installed in most 2026 published ranges, a hybrid inverter $2,000 to $4,500, and a microinverter $150 to $650 per unit.
Under warranty (SolarEdge 12 years, Enphase 25) the manufacturer ships the part free and you pay labor. String inverters carry 10 to 12 year warranties against 25 for panels, so they are the component owners should expect to replace first.

Solar inverter replacement is the removal of a failed or end-of-life inverter and installation of a new one on an existing array, costing $1,000 to $3,500 for a string inverter and $150 to $650 per unit for microinverters in 2026 published ranges, and it is the repair owners of older systems should expect first, since string inverters are warranted for 10 to 12 years against 25 for panels.
If you lease your system or have a power purchase agreement, the financing company owns it and is responsible for this work; call the servicer on your statement (SunStrong for Sunnova and legacy SunPower, Renewbrook for most PosiGen leases). The rest of this page is for owners of cash and loan systems. The owned vs leased guide explains the difference.

Solar inverter not working: what to check first
- Look at the inverter display or status light. Green and steady is normal. Red, flashing or an error code means a fault. A blank screen at midday means no DC input or no AC connection.
- Check the AC disconnect and the breaker labeled solar in the main panel. A tripped breaker is a frequent cause of a dead system and the only one you should touch yourself.
- Check the app. One panel at zero means a microinverter or optimizer; every panel at zero means the inverter or the grid connection.
- Note the error code and the model. The code and the model tell the technician what to bring.
Inverter showing an error, or the whole system at zero? That is a repair call, not a replacement yet. Call the repair line with the brand and model.

Repowering an aging solar system
A system installed in 2012 to 2016 has a string inverter at or past its 10 to 12 year warranty and panels that, at the 0.5% a year degradation most manufacturers warrant against, produce roughly 95% of their original output. Repowering means a new inverter, often with optimizers or a switch to microinverters, and sometimes replacing the weakest panels. NuWatt publishes $3,000 to $8,000 for a full overhaul (April 2026); replacing the whole array runs $15,000 to $21,000 (Fixr). The right time is when the inverter fails, since the labor and permit are already in play. If your installer is gone, check the bankruptcy tracker for who holds your account, then come back here for the repair.

| Full overhaul, New England | $3,000 to $8,000 per system | NuWatt Energy, Apr 2026 |
| Full panel replacement (array) | $15,000 to $21,000 per system | Fixr, Jan 2025 |

Replace the inverter with a hybrid and add a battery at the same time
If the inverter has failed and you want backup power, a hybrid inverter plus a DC-coupled battery can cost less than a new string inverter plus a separate AC-coupled battery, and it keeps one piece of equipment on the wall instead of two. The battery page compares the options.
Solar inverter lifespan: how long inverters last
String inverters typically last about 10 to 15 years, according to EnergySage's estimate reported by pv magazine, and most need replacing at least once in an array's life. Microinverters can last about 25 years, but they have been in wide use for only about a decade, so that is not yet proven in the field. kWh Analytics has found that 80% of solar array failures happen at the inverter level, often from worn electrolytic capacitors.
Solar inverter overheating and derating
Inverters protect themselves from heat by cutting output, called derating, and recover on their own as they cool. SolarEdge says many of its single-phase US inverters deliver full power up to 120°F (50°C) of surrounding air and reduced power up to 140°F (60°C). SolarEdge and SMA list the same causes: hot surrounding air, direct sun on the inverter, too little clearance and poor ventilation; SMA adds clogged heat sinks or fans and an inverter undersized for the array. Derating itself does not damage the inverter, but an inverter that derates every afternoon is losing production. Shade the unit, clear the space around it and keep the heat sink clean.
Solar inverter red light and error codes
| Equipment | What the light means |
|---|---|
| SolarEdge (older models with green, yellow and red lights) | Red solid: an error. Red blinking: shutting down. Green solid: producing. Green blinking: standby |
| SolarEdge (newer HD-Wave with red, green and blue lights) | Red steady: a fault; red flashing: switched off; blue: monitoring communication (per an installer's guide) |
| Enphase IQ8 microinverter | Flashing green: normal. Flashing orange: no gateway communication. Flashing red: grid missing or out of spec. Solid red: a DC fault, power off |
From SolarEdge's North America installation guide (2019), an installer guide for HD-Wave, and Enphase's IQ8 manual (August 2022).
SolarEdge publishes its full error code list in a troubleshooting guide; codes look like 3x6A, and code 2x2 simply means night mode. Note the code and the model before calling, since the code tells the technician what to bring.
SolarEdge inverter repair and replacement
SolarEdge ships replacement inverters under warranty, and the warranty can be extended to 20 or 25 years depending on the model; registration has been required since January 4, 2025. Labor to swap the unit is the owner's cost unless SolarEdge agrees otherwise in writing. Optimizers, the box behind each panel, are replaced the same way, one at a time.
Enphase microinverter replacement, repair and warranty
Enphase microinverters are replaced, not repaired. Enphase ships the replacement under warranty through an RMA, and an installer or Enphase Care ($399 a year) does the roof work. A single microinverter swap is a one to two hour job.
Replace the inverter with a Powerwall 3
A Powerwall 3 has its own solar inverter with 6 inputs and room for 20 kW of panels, so when a string inverter fails out of warranty, an installer can wire the panels into a Powerwall and get a battery in the same job. The Tesla Powerwall cost page has the installed prices.

Questions people ask
How much does it cost to replace a solar inverter?
$1,000 to $3,500 for a string inverter in most 2026 published ranges; GreenLancer says $1,000 to $2,500, Forme Solar $1,800 to $3,500. Microinverters are $150 to $650 per unit installed.
How long do solar inverters last?
String inverters are warranted for 10 to 12 years (SolarEdge 12, SMA 10) and microinverters and optimizers for 25. A string inverter on a system installed before 2015 is past its warranty.
Is my SolarEdge inverter under warranty?
SolarEdge residential inverters carry a 12-year standard warranty, extendable to 20 or 25 years. Optimizers are 25 years. SolarEdge ships the replacement; a licensed installer does the swap.
Can I replace my solar inverter myself?
No. It is line-voltage electrical work that requires a licensed electrician or solar contractor in every state covered here, and usually a permit.
What does a solar inverter error code mean?
A fault the inverter has detected: grid voltage, isolation, arc fault, or internal failure. Note the code and model for the technician; some faults clear with a reset, others need replacement.
Should I repower my old solar system?
When the inverter fails and the panels are 10 or more years old, usually yes. A full overhaul is $3,000 to $8,000 per NuWatt; replacing the panels too runs $15,000 and up.
How long do solar inverters last?
About 10 to 15 years for a string inverter and about 25 years for microinverters, per EnergySage estimates reported by pv magazine.
Why is my solar inverter overheating?
Hot surrounding air, direct sun on the unit, too little clearance or poor ventilation. The inverter cuts output to protect itself and recovers as it cools.
What does a red light on my solar inverter mean?
On SolarEdge inverters, a solid red light means an error and a blinking red light means it is shutting down. Note the error code and model and call the repair line.
Where do I find SolarEdge inverter error codes?
SolarEdge publishes them in its Inverter Error Codes and Troubleshooting guide; codes also appear in the SolarEdge monitoring platform.
How do I find a SolarEdge installer near me?
SolarEdge lists installers on its website, or call the repair line on this page. Ask whether the installer can claim your monitoring site and process the warranty replacement.
Can a solar inverter be repaired, or does it have to be replaced?
Some faults clear with a reset or a part swap, but most failed string inverters are replaced, often free under warranty with labor billed separately.
How do I find a SolarEdge installer near me?
SolarEdge routes warranty service through installers, so any licensed solar or electrical contractor that works with SolarEdge can take over an orphaned system: ask it to add your site to its SolarEdge monitoring account before it orders parts. The call lines on this page reach companies that take systems they did not install.
