Do this now: three checks before you call about a short cycling furnace
Carrier says to rule out airflow first, and Trane puts the thermostat next:
- Replace the filter. Carrier calls a dirty filter the most common cause: heat builds up and the limit switch shuts the furnace down. Trane says every 1 to 3 months; HomeAdvisor prices one at $1 to $35.
- Open every supply register and clear the returns. Carrier says vents closed for summer are a commonly overlooked cause; Trane says furniture and drapes block returns.
- Check the thermostat. Fresh batteries, set to heat, fan on auto. Trane says a thermostat near a vent, a heat source or direct sunlight reads wrong and cycles the furnace.
- Look at the vent pipe outside. Snow, leaves or a nest in the intake or exhaust. Trane says a blocked flue trips a limiter that shuts the furnace down to prevent CO poisoning. Clear what you can reach; do not take panels off.
- Still cycling? Carrier's advice once airflow is ruled out: shut the system off and contact an HVAC professional.
- Smell gas? Leave without touching light switches, phones or the garage door opener, then call 911 or the gas utility from outside (Kansas Corporation Commission). The furnace waits.
Is it an emergency? When short cycling means shut it off
Short cycling is usually a nuisance that raises bills, but three versions of it mean the furnace should stay off until someone looks, and HomeGuide prices after-hours furnace labor at $140 to $210 an hour against $75 to $150 in business hours.
- Carbon monoxide alarm sounding, or anyone dizzy, nauseous or confused? Get everyone outside, then call 911 from outside. CPSC says not to search for the source and not to go back in until responders say it is safe.
- Loud banging, puffing or hissing, or a burning smell. ConsumerAffairs says to shut the furnace off and call; it calls an electrical burning smell just as dangerous as a gas odor.
- Cycling with a blinking red light that will not clear. Trane says to write down the pattern and call; see furnace error codes.
- No heat in freezing weather: emergency HVAC repair covers what to do first.
- Can wait: a furnace that runs 7 minutes or more per cycle and just cycles often on a very cold night. Trane says that can be normal.
Furnace short cycling is a furnace that starts, runs briefly and shuts off before the house reaches the set temperature, then starts again. Trane says a normal cycle lasts at least 7 minutes; Carrier says short cycling is often defined as on and off within less than 5 to 10 minutes. HomeGuide prices the repair at $100 to $400.
Why does my furnace keep turning off? The causes in order
A furnace keeps turning off for eight common reasons in Carrier's, Trane's and HomeGuide's lists, and the first three are the owner's to check:
| Cause | What happens | Fix and price |
|---|---|---|
| Dirty filter | Most common (Carrier); heat builds and the limit switch shuts it down | Replace the filter; $1 to $35 (HomeAdvisor) |
| Blocked vents or returns | Closed registers, furniture on returns (Carrier, Trane) | Open them |
| Thermostat | Batteries, placement near heat or sun, wiring, calibration (Trane, Carrier) | Batteries first; $100 to $600 to replace (HomeAdvisor) |
| Blocked flue or vent pipe | Trips the flue limiter, which shuts the furnace down to prevent CO poisoning (Trane) | Technician; do not run it |
| Flame sensor | Dirty sensor drops the flame seconds after ignition (HomeGuide, Carrier FAQ) | $80 to $250 (HomeGuide) |
| Limit switch | Fails or trips on overheating (Trane, Carrier) | $100 to $375 (HomeGuide) |
| Oversized furnace | Heats too fast, satisfies the thermostat, shuts off (Carrier); often from day one (Trane) | Load calculation; sometimes a new furnace |
| Cracked heat exchanger | Short cycling is a listed sign (Trane, Lennox) | $1,000 to $3,000; see below |
Carrier and Trane owner pages (2025 to 2026), HomeGuide (Aug 2025), HomeAdvisor (Jun 2026).
HomeGuide adds a dirty blower wheel to the list, and Carrier says an undersized furnace does the opposite: it runs without stopping. Both say continued short cycling can crack the heat exchanger, which is why the cheap fixes are worth doing now.
Furnace short cycling repair cost
Furnace short cycling repair costs $100 to $400 in HomeGuide's 2025 guide, inside the $125 to $480 it lists for furnace repairs in general; HomeAdvisor's June 2026 average for any furnace repair is $318.
- Flame sensor cleaned or replaced: $80 to $250 (HomeGuide); $150 to $250 (HomeAdvisor). The most common paid fix.
- Limit switch: $100 to $375 (HomeGuide); $150 to $300 (HomeAdvisor).
- Thermostat: $190 to $480 (HomeGuide); $100 to $600 (HomeAdvisor). Prices by type on thermostat replacement cost.
- Ignitor: $100 to $250 (HomeGuide); $150 to $500 (HomeAdvisor).
- Heat exchanger: $1,000 to $3,000 (HomeGuide, Trane). Trane says it can cost several thousand dollars and is a professional assessment; see cracked heat exchanger.
- Oversized furnace: no part fixes it. Trane says to have the sizing checked if it has short cycled since installation; the fix at replacement time is a load calculation and the right size, on furnace replacement cost.
Furnace making a loud noise: banging, squealing, buzzing
A banging furnace is the noise to act on: ConsumerAffairs says loud popping points to delayed ignition and intense banging right after startup can be a cracked heat exchanger, and to shut the furnace off for loud banging, puffing or hissing. HomeAdvisor prices the blower motor behind a grinding noise at $150 to $2,000.
| Noise | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Minor popping after startup | Ducts expanding as they heat (ConsumerAffairs) | Normal |
| Loud bang or boom at ignition | Delayed ignition from dirty burners or a faulty ignitor (ConsumerAffairs) | Shut it off, call |
| Intense banging right after startup, from the furnace | Possible cracked heat exchanger (ConsumerAffairs) | Shut it off, call |
| Squealing or screeching | Slipping blower belt; at vents, a clogged filter (ConsumerAffairs) | Filter first, then call |
| Grinding | Blower motor (ConsumerAffairs) | Call; $150 to $2,000 (HomeAdvisor) |
| Rattling | Loose panel; tighten visible screws (ConsumerAffairs) | Usually harmless |
| Buzzing | Failing capacitor or loose wiring; a fire risk with a burning odor (ConsumerAffairs) | Shut it off, call |
| Hissing with a gas smell | Gas leak (ConsumerAffairs) | Leave, call 911 and the gas company |

Furnace smells like burning
A burning smell from a furnace has two usual readings: dust burning off at the first fire of the season, which clears within an hour, and an electrical burning smell, which ConsumerAffairs calls just as dangerous as a gas odor and says to shut the furnace off and call about immediately.
- First heat of the fall, dusty smell, gone within an hour: dust on the heat exchanger and burners. Change the filter.
- Burning plastic or electrical smell, or buzzing with the smell: ConsumerAffairs links buzzing with a burning odor to failing capacitors or loose wiring and a fire risk. Furnace off at the switch, then call.
- Metallic or chemical odor: Lennox and Trane list it as a cracked heat exchanger sign. Furnace off, call.
- Rotten egg smell: gas. Leave, then 911 or the utility from outside.
Furnace pilot light out
Most furnaces made since 2010 have no pilot light, per Lennox, so a furnace that will not light usually has an electronic ignitor problem instead; on an older standing-pilot furnace, HomeGuide says the thermocouple closes the gas line when the pilot is off and prices a thermocouple at $100 to $300.
- Relighting: follow the label inside the furnace door exactly, once. If it will not stay lit, Lennox says that can point to a faulty gas valve or a blockage, and Lennox says a faulty thermocouple is a technician's job.
- Pilot keeps going out: Bryant's boiler page names the thermocouple or pilot assembly; HomeAdvisor says drafts can blow a pilot out. HomeAdvisor prices a pilot assessment and relight at $50 to $150 on a water heater, which is the same visit.
- Yellow flame at the base instead of blue: Lennox says that suggests a blockage. Do not keep relighting; call.
Heater not working at all: where this page hands off
A heater that does nothing is a different list from one that short cycles, and HomeAdvisor's furnace repair average of $318 covers both; the no-heat checks (switch, breaker, thermostat, filter, door panel) are on furnace repair, cold air with the blower running on furnace blowing cold air, and after-hours calls on emergency furnace repair.
Furnace short cycling: what to ask on the call
- What is the service call fee, and is it applied to the repair? HomeGuide prices furnace labor at $75 to $150 an hour; ask for the flat fee.
- Will you check the flame sensor, limit switch and heat exchanger? Ask for the combustion reading.
- How long is a cycle now? Time three cycles before the call; Trane's normal is 7 minutes or more.
- Is the furnace sized right for the house? If it has always done this, ask.
- License number and proof of insurance. Ask for the company's license number and proof of insurance yourself; the HVAC license table shows who licenses HVAC work by state.
Filter changed, vents open, still cycling? Call the heating and AC line and say how many minutes it runs.

Questions people ask
Why does my furnace keep turning on and off?
Carrier says a dirty filter is the most common cause: heat builds up and the limit switch shuts the furnace down. Blocked vents, a thermostat problem, a dirty flame sensor, a blocked flue, a failed limit switch, an oversized furnace or a cracked heat exchanger come next.
What is furnace short cycling?
A furnace that shuts off before reaching the set temperature and restarts soon after. Trane says a normal cycle is at least 7 minutes; Carrier says short cycling is often defined as on and off within less than 5 to 10 minutes.
How much does it cost to fix a short cycling furnace?
HomeGuide prices a short cycling repair at $100 to $400. A flame sensor is $80 to $250, a limit switch $100 to $375, a thermostat $190 to $480 and a heat exchanger $1,000 to $3,000 in its figures.
Is furnace short cycling dangerous?
Trane says it mainly costs money, but Carrier says continued short cycling can crack the heat exchanger, which can leak carbon monoxide. A CO alarm or a burning smell means shut it off and call.
Why is my furnace making a loud banging noise?
ConsumerAffairs says loud popping at startup points to delayed ignition from dirty burners or a faulty ignitor, and intense banging right after startup can be a cracked heat exchanger. Shut it off and call.
Why does my furnace smell like burning?
Dust burning off at the first fire of the season clears within an hour. An electrical burning smell, or buzzing with the smell, is a fire risk per ConsumerAffairs: furnace off, then call.
How do I relight a furnace pilot light?
Follow the label inside the furnace door, once. Lennox says most furnaces made since 2010 have no pilot, and a pilot that will not stay lit can mean a faulty gas valve, a blockage or a thermocouple, which HomeGuide prices at $100 to $300.
