Do this now: five checks before you book an AC tune-up

Five quick checks tell you whether you need a $70 to $200 tune-up (HomeGuide) or a repair call. Safety comes first:

  1. Shut it off first. Turn the system off at the thermostat, then switch off the AC breaker. Open only the panel door to reach the breaker; never remove the panel cover. Leave the outdoor unit's access panels closed: ENERGY STAR notes that faulty electrical connections can cause unsafe operation, and the capacitor inside holds a charge even with the power off (Carrier).
  2. Check the air filter. The DOE says replacing a dirty filter can lower AC energy use 5% to 15%, and to clean or replace it every month or two in cooling season.
  3. Clear the outdoor unit. Rake away leaves and debris and trim plants back at least 2 feet (DOE). Angi adds keeping dryer vents at least 6 feet from the unit.
  4. Look for water around the indoor unit. ENERGY STAR says a plugged condensate drain can cause water damage; see AC leaking water if you find any.
  5. Write down the label details: brand, model, age and refrigerant from the outdoor unit, and check the warranty. HomeGuide says some manufacturers require yearly maintenance to keep the warranty valid.

Is it urgent? When you need an AC repair, not a tune-up

A tune-up is routine, but an AC that blows warm air, freezes, leaks or will not start needs a repair call, and it is an emergency when the house is over 90 F with someone at higher risk inside. The CDC names people 65 and older, infants and young children, and people with asthma or heart disease, and says a fan can raise body temperature once it is above 90 F. Dial 2-1-1 to find a place with air conditioning.

Can it wait? A system that cools normally can wait for a weekday tune-up. HomeGuide puts emergency labor at $160 to $250 an hour, against $75 to $150 in regular hours, so book maintenance before the first heat wave. Night and weekend steps are on emergency HVAC repair.

Definition

An AC tune-up is a yearly service visit where a technician cleans, tests and adjusts a central air conditioner or heat pump before cooling season. HomeGuide puts it at $70 to $200 and about an hour of work.

How much does an AC tune-up cost

An AC tune-up costs $70 to $200 in HomeGuide's 2026 guide, with a $120 national average, a $50 low and a $300 high. Angi's July 2026 range is $75 to $200, and Angi says prices rise in peak season. HomeAdvisor lists $75 to $200 a visit for annual maintenance in its capacitor guide and $80 to $100 for a yearly tune-up in its AC repair guide. Angi says a visit that covers both heating and cooling can run up to $500.

The tune-up price does not cover repairs. HomeGuide says a service call is $75 to $200 and is usually applied to a repair, and it prices refrigerant, leak detection and coil cleaning as extras (see the table above).

What does an AC tune-up include

A standard AC tune-up takes about an hour in HomeGuide's estimate (one to two hours in Angi's) and covers cleaning, electrical checks and tests. HomeGuide's checklist:

  • Air: clean or replace the filter, check airflow, measure temperatures at the return and the vents, clean and adjust the blower.
  • Electrical: inspect the capacitors, contactors, wiring and electrical disconnect; measure the compressor's amperage and voltage.
  • Outdoor unit: clean and inspect the condenser coil, check the fan blade, lubricate moving parts.
  • Refrigerant: check the lines, levels and fittings for leaks.
  • Drainage: flush the condensate drain line and clean the drain pan.
  • Controls: calibrate the thermostat and check the startup and cooling cycle.

HomeGuide lists evaporator coil cleaning, a refrigerant recharge, leak detection and duct testing as not included. Angi's list does include cleaning both coils, so ask which version you are paying for. Only technicians certified under EPA Section 608 may handle refrigerant.

How often should an AC unit be serviced

An AC unit should be serviced once a year, in spring before cooling season; ENERGY STAR, HomeGuide and Angi all give that timing. HomeGuide suggests a spring and a fall visit for a heat pump, since it runs all year, and Angi says homes in hot, humid climates may need two AC visits a year. The DOE says regular maintenance can cut heating and cooling costs by 10% or more. The furnace side gets its own fall visit, which HomeAdvisor prices at $125 to $200 (furnace repair).

Is an AC maintenance plan worth it

An AC maintenance plan costs $120 to $360 a year in HomeGuide's figures and usually includes two tune-ups, filter service, priority scheduling, lower emergency rates and 5% to 15% off repairs or parts. It tends to pay off when the warranty requires yearly service: HomeGuide says some manufacturers require it, most mini splits do, and skipping it may void the warranty. Ductless plans run $100 to $400 a year (HomeGuide); see mini split installation for repair prices.

Does an AC tune-up include refrigerant

No. HomeGuide says tune-ups typically do not include a refill, and that an AC needs more refrigerant only when it has a leak. If a technician says the charge is low, ask for the leak to be found: HomeGuide puts a leak check at $100 to $330 and leak repair at $200 to $1,500, while a recharge alone runs $100 to $320 for R-410A and $180 to $600 for R-22. Angi prices refrigerant replacement at $100 to $350.

AC maintenance you can do yourself

Between tune-ups, homeowners can handle the filter and the space around the outdoor unit; the electrical parts and refrigerant stay with the technician.

  • Filter: monthly checks (ENERGY STAR, Angi); the DOE says clean or replace it every month or two in cooling season.
  • Outdoor unit: keep leaves and grass off it and plants trimmed back 2 feet (DOE).
  • Thermostat: Angi suggests raising it 7 to 10 degrees when you are away for a while.
  • Leave alone: the electrical panels, the capacitor and the refrigerant lines. HomeGuide also warns against leveling the outdoor unit yourself, because shifting it can damage the line set and cause leaks.

AC tune-up near me: what to ask before you book

  • What is the price, and what is on the checklist? Ask whether evaporator coil cleaning is included.
  • What happens if you find a problem? Ask for a written price before any repair.
  • Is the technician EPA Section 608 certified? Required to handle refrigerant.
  • Does my warranty require proof of yearly service? Keep the invoice.
  • What does the maintenance plan include, and does it renew automatically?

If the tune-up turns up a worn part, AC repair lists what common fixes cost, and an old system may be better priced on AC replacement cost or HVAC system replacement cost. Duct cleaning is a separate job. Yearly upkeep across the house is on home maintenance cost, and every trade's prices are on home repair costs. Calls go to an independent company that serves your area and takes this kind of job. Ask for its license number and proof of insurance yourself, and check the license with the state; the HVAC license table lists who issues it in six states. How calls work.
