Do this now: mini split not cooling or not turning on
Eight checks from the manufacturers' own troubleshooting pages, in order; most take a minute:
| Check | What the manufacturers say |
|---|---|
| Power | Breaker on, cord secure, GFCI reset (MRCOOL); power failure, blown fuse or a running timer stops the unit (Fujitsu) |
| Mode and set point | Cooling mode, with the set point lower than the room temperature (MRCOOL) |
| Remote | Replace the batteries if it does not respond (MRCOOL) |
| Filter | Wash in warm water and mild detergent, dry fully; every 4 to 6 weeks (MRCOOL) |
| Outdoor unit | Clear leaves and dirt, check the fan spins freely (MRCOOL) |
| Startup delay | The compressor waits about 3 minutes after a stop before restarting (Fujitsu) |
| Air temperature | A healthy system shows an 8 to 30 F difference between air in and air out at the indoor unit (MRCOOL) |
| Restart | Breaker off for at least 15 minutes, then on (MRCOOL) |
MRCOOL (Nov 2024) and Fujitsu AIRSTAGE owner troubleshooting pages.
Ice on the copper lines, or lines near room temperature while the unit runs, can mean low refrigerant (MRCOOL). Stop there: MRCOOL says refrigerant leaks and recharging are for a licensed technician, and EPA requires Section 608 certification for anyone who services equipment that could release refrigerant.
Is it urgent? Mini split problems to call about today
A mini split is urgent when it is the only heat or cooling in the room and the weather is extreme; HomeAdvisor prices emergency HVAC labor at $160 to $250 an hour against $75 to $150 in business hours, and PickHVAC's mini split figures run $125 to $225 an hour for emergency or weekend calls.
- Today: burning smell or a breaker that trips again after one reset; leave the unit off and call.
- Today: water dripping from the indoor unit onto walls or floors; mist in cooling mode is normal condensation (Fujitsu), a stream is not.
- This week: ice on the lines, a blinking lamp that does not clear after the restart above, weak airflow after a filter wash.
- Can wait: a unit that cools but is due for its twice-yearly service (Fixr).
Mini split repair is fixing a ductless heating and cooling system: the wall unit, the outdoor unit, or the refrigerant line set between them. HomeAdvisor puts a ductless mini split repair at $750 to $900.
How much does mini split repair cost?
Mini split repair costs $750 to $900 in HomeAdvisor's June 2026 AC repair guide, and its heat pump repair guide puts a ductless mini split at $100 to $1,500; the low end is a service call and the high end is a compressor. PickHVAC's May 2026 guide breaks it down: a service call averages $110, a recharge $300, a capacitor or fan motor $275, a line set repair $550 and a compressor $2,400.
The service call is where the price starts. HomeAdvisor lists $75 to $200 and PickHVAC $60 to $200, often applied to the repair. Ask on the call.
Ductless mini split repair by part
- Capacitor or fan motor, $100 to $600 (PickHVAC). A unit that hums but does not start, or an outdoor fan that will not spin.
- Refrigerant leak and recharge, $150 to $450 to recharge (PickHVAC). Ice on the lines or warm air with the compressor running (MRCOOL). The leak has to be found and fixed first or the charge does not last.
- Line set, $200 to $1,200 (PickHVAC). The copper lines between the units; damage usually shows as a leak.
- Control board or sensor. HomeAdvisor's AC guide lists a thermostat at $60 to $440 and HomeGuide's heat pump guide a circuit board at $150 to $700. A blinking lamp that will not clear often lands here.
- Compressor, $1,200 to $4,500 (PickHVAC). On an older unit this is where replacement enters the conversation; HomeGuide prices a single-zone mini split installed at $2,500 to $6,000.
- Condensate drain. Water from the indoor unit. Often a cleaning rather than a part.
Mini split error codes and blinking lights
A blinking lamp on a mini split is not always a fault: Fujitsu says the lamps "may blink even when no failure occurs," and its AIRSTAGE page says the OPERATION lamp flashes for about 7 to 15 minutes while the unit defrosts in heating mode.
- Normal: alternating blinks of the operation and timer lamps after a power interruption; simultaneous blinks during a test run, cleared by pressing START/STOP and pressing it again (Fujitsu).
- Normal: the OPERATION lamp flashing during defrost, a sizzling sound during defrost, and water-flow sounds for 2 to 3 minutes after startup (Fujitsu AIRSTAGE).
- A fault: the unit does not run and the lamps keep blinking after the breaker restart. Fujitsu says to count the blinks of each lamp and note the speed, since different counts and speeds mean different errors, then give the model name and the pattern, or the alphanumeric code on units with a display, to the service line.
- Where the code list is: the operating manual for your model. Fujitsu's manuals are on its CONNECT portal, searched by model name; the code tables differ by model and brand, so we do not reprint them here.
- Before a repair visit, Fujitsu says to shut the unit down and unplug the power cord. Have the model name from the label on the indoor unit.
Mini split not cooling: the usual causes
A mini split that is not cooling is most often a settings, filter or airflow problem, and MRCOOL's test is a thermometer: 8 to 30 F cooler air leaving the indoor unit than entering it means the system is doing its job.
- Settings. Wrong mode, a set point above room temperature, dead remote batteries (MRCOOL); SUPER QUIET mode lowers airflow (Fujitsu).
- Dirty filter. MRCOOL says it obstructs airflow and reduces cooling; wash it every 4 to 6 weeks.
- Blocked grille or outlet, open windows, sunlight or heat sources in the room (Fujitsu).
- Outdoor unit choked with debris or a fan that does not spin (MRCOOL).
- Low refrigerant. Ice on the lines, lines near ambient temperature (MRCOOL). A technician's job.
Repair or replace a mini split
Replacing a single-zone mini split costs $2,500 to $6,000 installed in HomeGuide's guide, so a compressor at $1,200 to $4,500 (PickHVAC) on an older unit is the point to price both. HomeGuide's heat pump guide suggests replacing a system over 10 to 15 years old, or when a repair runs more than 50% of a new one.
Keep the maintenance up on a newer unit: HomeGuide says most mini splits require annual service to keep the warranty, and Fixr prices mini split maintenance at $300 to $550 a visit, HomeGuide a plan at $100 to $400 a year.
Mini split repair near me: what to ask
- What is the service call fee, and is it applied to the repair? $60 to $200 (PickHVAC; HomeAdvisor $75 to $200).
- Do you service this brand? Fujitsu says only an authorized certified contractor can install its units; ask whether the company is set up for yours.
- Is the unit under warranty, and will the repair keep it? Have the install date.
- Is there a leak, and where? Ask for the leak to be found before any recharge.
- EPA Section 608 certification for the technician handling refrigerant.
- License number and proof of insurance. Ask for the company's license number and proof of insurance yourself; the HVAC license table shows who licenses HVAC work by state.
Have the brand, the zone count and the blink pattern? Call the heating and AC line and read them out.
Buying rather than fixing: mini split installation. Ducted systems: heat pump repair, heat pump maintenance and AC repair. Rebates on a new system: heat pump rebates. Calls go to an independent heating and cooling company that serves your area and takes this kind of job; hours vary. How calls work.
Questions people ask
How much does mini split repair cost?
HomeAdvisor puts a ductless mini split repair at $750 to $900 in its AC guide and $100 to $1,500 in its heat pump guide. PickHVAC averages: service call $110, recharge $300, capacitor or fan motor $275, compressor $2,400.
Why is my mini split not cooling?
Check the mode and set point, remote batteries, the filter, and the outdoor unit for debris (MRCOOL). Ice on the copper lines can mean low refrigerant, which takes a licensed technician.
Why is the light blinking on my mini split?
Fujitsu says lamps may blink with no failure: during defrost, after a power interruption or in a test run. If the unit does not run, count the blinks of each lamp and give the pattern and model to the service line.
How often should a mini split be serviced?
Twice a year per Fixr, which prices mini split maintenance at $300 to $550 a visit. HomeGuide says most mini splits require annual service to keep the warranty.
Can I recharge a mini split myself?
No. MRCOOL says refrigerant leaks and recharging are for a licensed technician, and EPA requires Section 608 certification to service equipment that could release refrigerant.
Should I repair or replace an old mini split?
HomeGuide prices a new single-zone unit at $2,500 to $6,000 installed and suggests replacing a heat pump over 10 to 15 years old or when a repair costs more than 50% of new.
