Do this now: before you buy, so the rebate is not lost

Most programs pay only if the paperwork happens before the install, and California's rule is the strictest: "Projects must have an approved reservation in order to be funded."

  1. Reserve before you buy where the program requires it. California HEEHRA says rebates are not retroactive. Colorado's credit is claimed by a registered contractor and shown on the invoice; it cannot be added later.
  2. Use a listed contractor. California: TECH-certified and HEEHRA-trained (the HEEHRA badge in the Switch Is On finder). Colorado: a registered contractor. NYS Clean Heat: its Find a Contractor tool.
  3. Check the equipment list. Mass Save and Colorado require specific ENERGY STAR tiers; California requires a refrigerant with a GWP of 700 or lower from January 1, 2026.
  4. Note the deadlines. Mass Save: equipment installed in 2026, forms by Feb 28, 2027. Xcel Minnesota: postmarked by Sep 30 of the year after installation.
  5. Ask for the rebate line on the quote. Many programs pay the contractor, who discounts the invoice; the quote should show the amount and the program name.

Is it urgent? Programs that are closed, waitlisted or about to change

Two of the programs on this page have run out of money, so the urgent question is whether yours is open today: California's HEEHRA was fully reserved as of February 24, 2026 and Colorado's HEAR is closed, while Mass Save's 2026 amounts run through December 31, 2026.

  • Federal tax credit: gone. The IRS says the 25C credit is not allowed for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. A quote that still shows a $2,000 federal credit for a 2026 install is wrong.
  • California: the CEC says fully reserved statewide with a waitlist (Feb 24, 2026); The Switch Is On's headline says single-family HEEHRA re-opened for new projects. Have the contractor request a reservation and tell you the answer before you sign.
  • Colorado: HEAR single-family closed; the state tax credit continues at $1,000 air source for 2026, lower than the $1,500 of 2024 to 2025.
  • Massachusetts: the 2026 amounts apply to equipment installed January 1 to December 31, 2026 (Mass Save).
  • Federal HEAR money in other states: DOE's rebates page says a state is only ready to pay once it reaches the final step of a four-step process; the page's status map is the place to check your state, then the state energy office.
Definition

Heat pump rebates are cash back or bill discounts from a state, a utility or a federally funded state program for installing a heat pump or heat pump water heater. In 2026 they are state and utility money only; the federal 25C tax credit ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025 (IRS).

Is there a heat pump tax credit in 2026?

No federal one. The IRS says the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C), which paid 30% up to $2,000 a year for heat pumps and heat pump water heaters, is not allowed for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Colorado has a state credit of $1,000 for an air source heat pump in 2026, delivered as a discount on the invoice by a registered contractor.

Some 2026 city cost guides still quote a federal credit of up to $2,000; the IRS page is the one to trust. Our heat pump installation cost page carries the same note.

Mass Save heat pump rebate (Massachusetts)

Mass Save pays $2,650 per ton up to $8,500 for a whole-home air source heat pump in 2026, $1,125 per ton up to $8,500 for partial-home, and $250 per ton up to $2,500 for a basic install, with income-based offers up to $16,000 or no cost.

  • Heat pump water heater: $750 per unit, $1,500 for a split system, installed by a licensed plumber.
  • Smart thermostat: up to $100 each, limit 3.
  • Dates: equipment installed January 1 to December 31, 2026; rebate forms due February 28, 2027.
  • Gas, oil and propane boilers and furnaces: no longer rebated except for income-eligible customers, so the boiler-to-heat-pump math in Massachusetts has changed. Boiler prices are on boiler replacement cost.
  • City pages: HVAC repair in Boston.

Con Edison and NYSERDA heat pump rebates (New York)

Con Edison advertises up to $10,000 for making an air source heat pump your primary heating source and up to $35,000 for ground source, through the NYS Clean Heat program that seven utilities sponsor; the exact amount depends on your utility and whether the home qualifies for the Weatherized Tier.

  • How to see your number: NYS Clean Heat's rebate finder works by address; the amount is not published as one figure.
  • Smart thermostat: Con Edison pays $85 per enrolled thermostat (up to 12) with central AC, plus $25 a year.
  • NYSERDA's federal HEAR program: the NYSERDA pages we tried returned "File Not Found," so we do not list a status; check nyserda.ny.gov and the DOE status map.
  • City pages: HVAC repair in New York.

Xcel Energy heat pump rebates (Minnesota and Colorado)

Xcel Energy Minnesota pays $1,100 to $2,000 for an air source heat pump depending on the type and whether you are a gas or electric-only customer, $1,600 for a mini split and $2,000 for a cold climate mini split, on its 2024 to 2026 rebate sheet.

  • Heat pump water heater: $400, or $500 if demand-managed (Minnesota).
  • Ground source: $500 per heating ton (Minnesota).
  • Deadline: applications postmarked by September 30 of the year after installation (Minnesota).
  • Colorado: Xcel's Colorado rebate pages load by script and we could not read the amounts, so they are not listed; the state's $1,000 tax credit applies on top of whatever Xcel pays. City pages: Minneapolis and Denver.

California heat pump rebates: HEEHRA, TECH and The Switch Is On

California's HEEHRA rebates pay up to $8,000 for heat pump HVAC in households under 80% of area median income and up to $4,000 at 80% to 150%, and the California Energy Commission said single-family rebates were fully reserved statewide as of February 24, 2026, with a waitlist.

  • The conflict: The Switch Is On's incentives page headline says single-family HEEHRA rebates re-opened for new projects, with no date or amounts on the page. Ask the contractor to request a reservation and show you the approval.
  • Rules: TECH-certified, HEEHRA-trained contractor; ENERGY STAR equipment; from January 1, 2026 a refrigerant with a GWP of 700 or lower; the home must be replacing a non-heat-pump heat source; no retroactive rebates.
  • TECH Clean California runs separate incentives through the same contractors; check techcleanca.com for the current status.
  • HOMES rebates are not yet available (CEC). City pages: Los Angeles and Sacramento.

Heat pump water heater rebates

Heat pump water heater rebates run $400 to $1,500 on the verified pages: Mass Save $750 ($1,500 split system), Xcel Energy Minnesota $400 or $500, and NYS Clean Heat lists heat pump water heaters in its finder without a single published figure.

The federal 25C credit covered heat pump water heaters too, and ended on the same date. Installation prices are on water heater replacement cost.

Heat pump rebates: what to ask the installer

  • Which rebates will you file, and is the amount on the quote?
  • Are you registered or certified for the program? TECH and HEEHRA in California; registered in Colorado; NYS Clean Heat's list.
  • Does this model qualify? Tier, ENERGY STAR, refrigerant.
  • Is a reservation required, and has it been approved?
  • What is the price without the rebate? HomeAdvisor's installed average is $6,087; a rebate should not move the base price.
  • License number and proof of insurance. Ask for the company's license number and proof of insurance yourself; the HVAC license table shows who licenses HVAC work by state.

Ready to price a heat pump with the rebate on the quote? Call the heating and AC line and ask which programs the company files.
