How much is a mini split unit? Prices by brand
Equipment alone for a single zone, before installation, runs from $1,000 to $3,800 for GREE and $1,000 to $3,400 for Pioneer up to $1,400 to $4,800 for Mitsubishi or Trane and $2,400 to $6,000 for Carrier, per HomeGuide. Daikin lists at $1,100 to $5,600 and LG at $1,100 to $5,000. HomeGuide says a standard line set is about 15 feet and longer runs cost more, and that electrical upgrades add to the price.
Where a ductless mini split makes sense
ENERGY STAR describes mini splits as one outdoor unit serving one or more wall or ceiling heads with no ductwork needed. It lists these uses:
- Homes, or parts of homes, without ducts.
- Older homes with radiators or baseboard heat that never had central air.
- Additions, outbuildings and spaces where extending ducts is hard.
- Homes with costly electric heat. ENERGY STAR says certified mini splits use up to 60% less energy than standard electric radiators.
- Supplementing an existing system. In cold climates, ENERGY STAR's cold-climate units are tested down to 5°F and work best paired with backup heat.
If the house already has good ducts, compare against central AC replacement cost and heat pump installation cost before you choose.
Can you install a mini split yourself
HomeGuide advises against DIY installation. The refrigerant lines have to be connected and charged, and EPA Section 608 requires certification for technicians who service equipment that could release refrigerant. Wiring the outdoor unit is electrician work; the electrician license by state page lists who needs what.
Mini split refrigerant and the 2025 rule
EPA's Technology Transitions table names mini splits among the residential systems that must use a refrigerant within a GWP limit of 700 when installed from January 1, 2025, unless all components were made or imported before that date. Ask which refrigerant the system uses and write it down for future service calls.
Mini split repair cost
HomeAdvisor puts ductless mini split repair at $750 to $900 in its 2026 guide, higher than its $100 to $500 for central AC. PickHVAC's 2026 breakdown by job:
| Repair | Published price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Service call or diagnostic | $60 to $200 (average $110) | PickHVAC, May 2026 |
| Ductless mini split repair, typical | $750 to $900 | HomeAdvisor, June 2026 |
| Capacitor or fan motor | $100 to $600 (average $275) | PickHVAC, May 2026 |
| Refrigerant recharge | $150 to $450 (average $300) | PickHVAC, May 2026 |
| Line set repair | $200 to $1,200 (average $550) | PickHVAC, May 2026 |
| Compressor | $1,200 to $4,500 (average $2,400) | PickHVAC, May 2026 |
| Tune-up | $75 to $200 (average $120) | PickHVAC, May 2026 |
PickHVAC lists labor at $75 to $125 an hour, or $125 to $225 for emergency or weekend service.
Common reasons to call: the head blows but does not cool or heat, water drips from the indoor unit, or the outdoor unit will not start. Clean the head's filters first; ENERGY STAR says to check filters monthly and that a dirty filter can damage the equipment. For a central system that is not cooling, see AC not cooling.
Is there a tax credit for a mini split in 2026
No federal credit for 2026 installs. The IRS says the 25C credit, which allowed up to $2,000 a year for a qualifying heat pump, applied to improvements made through December 31, 2025. Some ENERGY STAR pages still show the older end date. Ask your utility about rebates.

Mini split installation near me: what to ask
- How did you size each zone? Ask for the BTU of each head and the outdoor unit.
- Where will the line set run, and how long is it? HomeGuide says runs longer than about 15 feet cost more.
- Is electrical work included? Get the circuit and disconnect as a separate line.
- Which refrigerant, and is the technician Section 608 certified?
- What is the warranty, and does it require registration or annual service?
- License number and proof of insurance. Check the license with your state board.
