Tree trimming

Tree trimming, or pruning, is cutting selected branches to remove dead wood, clear the house or reduce a tree's size without taking it down. HomeGuide puts the 2026 average at $400 to $900 per tree.

HomeGuide's January 2026 guide puts the national average at $650 per tree, and Fixr's 2025 guide at $450. Both agree the price climbs with height and with how hard the tree is to reach. Fixr estimates 1 to 2 hours for a small tree and 3 to 6 hours for trees over 50 feet, at $50 to $80 per hour per worker. HomeGuide says many companies charge a minimum of $100 to $300 or more, so ask for one visit to cover every tree that needs work.

Do this now: a broken limb, a branch on a wire or a limb on the roof

  1. A limb on a power line: stay away and call the electric utility. FPL tells customers never to trim near power lines and to keep themselves and tools at least 10 feet from neighborhood lines.
  2. A cracked or hanging limb over the house, driveway or play area: keep people out from under it and call the tree service line.
  3. A branch through the roof: call your insurer first, photograph it, and do not sign over your claim to a contractor. Emergency roof repair covers tarping.
  4. Dead or broken branches can come off any time of year with little effect on the tree, the ISA says.

Is it an emergency? When tree trimming cannot wait

Tree trimming is an emergency when a broken or hanging limb is over people, the house or a wire; HomeGuide says hazardous branches should come off regardless of season. Fixr says emergency trimming adds $50 to $200 or more to the bill.

Routine pruning, thinning or raising can wait for late winter or early spring, which HomeGuide calls the best time to trim.

Tree trimming cost by height

A tree under 30 feet costs $250 to $700 to trim in HomeGuide's 2026 figures, and one over 60 feet costs $1,000 to $2,500 or more. The two guides cut the heights differently, so they are listed separately.

Tree trimming vs tree pruning

Fixr prices pruning, the health-focused work usually done by an arborist, separately from general trimming. The ISA describes four types of pruning, and a good quote names which one you are paying for:

  • Cleaning: removing dead, dying, diseased, weakly attached and low-vigor branches.
  • Raising: removing lower branches to give clearance.
  • Reduction: making the tree smaller, often to clear utility lines, by cutting back to side branches at least one-third the diameter of the cut stem.
  • Thinning: reducing the density of branches at the outer edge of the crown.

Fixr prices that health-focused pruning at $350 to $650. HomeGuide says hiring a certified arborist is not legally required but is highly recommended for trees over 15 feet.

When to trim trees

The ISA says growth and wound closure are best when pruning happens before the spring growth flush, and HomeGuide calls late winter or early spring, while trees are dormant, the best time to trim. The ISA's timing rules:

  • Dead, weak or diseased limbs can come off any time with little effect on the tree. HomeGuide agrees hazardous branches should be removed regardless of season.
  • Avoid heavy live pruning just after the spring flush.
  • Maples and birches may bleed sap if pruned in early spring.
  • Oaks in oak wilt areas should not be pruned while the disease is actively spreading.
  • No more than 25% of the crown at once, and less for mature trees.

How often depends on the tree. HomeGuide says mature trees need trimming every 3 to 5 years, young trees need more frequent attention, and fruit trees and fast growers may need it every year. It also says winter may bring lower rates.

Why tree topping is harmful

Topping, cutting branches back to stubs to shorten a tree, removes 50% to 100% of the leaf-bearing crown and can starve the tree, according to the ISA. Its brochure on topping lists what follows:

  • Weak regrowth. New shoots can grow as much as 20 feet in a year in some species, and they are prone to breaking.
  • Decay and pests. Large open wounds invite insects and disease, and the exposed wood begins to decay.
  • Cost and liability. Healthy trees can add 10% to 20% to a property's value, and the ISA says damage from a topped tree's branch failure may lead to a finding of negligence.

The ISA's alternative is to cut large limbs back to a side branch at least one-third their diameter, or to remove the tree and plant a better-suited species. Miami-Dade County treats excessive pruning such as topping that destroys a tree as a violation of its tree code. If a company offers to top a tree, find another company.

Trimming trees near power lines is the utility's job

Branches near overhead power lines should be trimmed by the electric utility or its line-clearance crews, and Fixr says in most cases the utility does it at no charge. FPL tells customers never to trim vegetation near power lines and to keep themselves and their tools at least 10 feet from neighborhood lines. HomeGuide says trimming trees that touch power lines requires a professional.

The wire from the pole to your house is usually your responsibility. Tampa Electric says it does not trim trees near service lines, which run from the pole to the home, but it will temporarily disconnect the service line so a tree crew can work if you call two weeks ahead. Call your utility first, then book the trim. If a limb is already on a wire, stay away and call the utility. If the service line was pulled off the house, see emergency electrician.

How to hire a tree trimming service

Tree trimming is dangerous work, and OSHA's Region III office lists workers struck by falling trees and limbs, falls from trees and lifts, and electrical shock near overhead lines among its documented accidents. The ISA's advice for hiring:

  • Check for an ISA arborist credential and confirm it with the ISA's Verify a Credential tool.
  • Ask for proof of insurance and call the insurance company to confirm it. Ask for the license number where your state or city requires one.
  • Get more than one estimate and references, and do not always take the lowest bid.
  • Get it in writing: which branches, which kind of pruning, and whether hauling is included. HomeGuide prices debris removal at $75 to $250.
  • Be wary of door-to-door bargains, the ISA says.

In Miami-Dade County, selective pruning that follows the ANSI A300 standard needs no permit, but other places differ; ask the company whether your city regulates pruning on large trees. If the tree is dead, splitting or leaning, trimming may not be enough: tree removal covers the warning signs and costs, and stump grinding covers what is left after.

Know which trees need work and roughly how tall they are? Call the tree service line and ask for a written price per tree that says whether hauling is included.

Trees over the roof and gutters

Raising cuts, in the ISA's terms, remove lower branches to clear buildings. If the gutters under the tree fill with leaves, gutter repair covers cleaning and guards; if a limb has already damaged the roof, roof repair lists what that costs. Moss on a shaded roof is a roof cleaning job. If a branch came through the roof in a storm, call your insurer first and do not sign over your claim to a contractor. Emergency roof repair covers what a tarp costs when you pay for it yourself. Tree work also appears on the home repair costs table.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

HomeGuide puts tree trimming at $400 to $900 per tree on average in 2026, with a national average of $650. Fixr's average is $450, with most jobs $175 to $750.

How much does it cost to trim a large tree?

HomeGuide prices trees over 60 feet at $1,000 to $2,500 or more. Fixr lists $300 to $1,800 for trees 50 to 100 feet tall.

When is the best time to trim trees?

Late winter or early spring, before new growth, according to HomeGuide and the ISA. Dead or dangerous branches can come off any time of year.

How often should trees be trimmed?

HomeGuide says mature trees every 3 to 5 years. Young trees need more frequent attention, and fruit trees and fast growers may need trimming every year.

Is topping a tree bad?

Yes. The ISA says topping removes 50% to 100% of the leaf-bearing crown, can starve the tree, and causes weak regrowth that breaks easily. Ask for reduction cuts instead.

Will the power company trim trees near power lines?

Usually for the main lines, and Fixr says in most cases at no charge. Tampa Electric says trees near the service line to your house are the owner's job, but it will disconnect the line so a crew can trim.

How much does palm tree trimming cost?

HomeGuide lists $100 to $900 per palm, and Fixr lists $100 to $1,500.
