Garage door installation in Los Angeles is removing an old garage door and installing a new one, usually with new springs and tracks and often a new opener. HomeAdvisor's 2026 national range is $754 to $1,707, with an average of $1,231.
LADBS permit for a new garage door in Los Angeles
A same-size door swap in the City of Los Angeles is permitted over the counter, not exempt: LADBS lists "Window and door change-out (same size & type) for residential buildings" as an Express Permit with no plan check. The bulletin does not name garage doors, so ask the installer whether it treats your door as covered and who pulls the permit.
Because a permit is involved, a license is too. CSLB says the $1,000 minor work exemption applies only when no building permit is needed, and HomeAdvisor's average installed door, $1,231, is above that line anyway; garage door contractors are licensed under the D-28 Doors, Gates and Activating Devices classification.
New opener rules: battery backup and safety reversing
Any new residential opener installed in California must have a battery backup that works in a power outage, under SB 969, effective July 1, 2019, with a $1,000 civil penalty per opener. In Los Angeles that backup earns its keep: during the January 2025 windstorm about 92,000 LADWP and 314,000 SCE customers lost power at one point.
Federal rules cover the safety side. Under 16 CFR Part 1211, openers made since January 1, 1993 must start reversing within 2 seconds of hitting an obstruction, have a secondary sensor such as a photo eye, and include a manual release. The CPSC says to test the reverse monthly with a 2x4 laid flat in the door's path.
Choosing a door: size, insulation and resale value
Size sets most of the price: HomeGuide puts a single door at $700 to $2,700 and a double at $1,000 to $3,500, and HomeAdvisor's three-car range runs $1,400 to $7,200. Insulated doors cost more, $750 to $1,900 for a single in HomeGuide's guide, and HomeGuide suggests R-6 to R-9 for an attached, unconditioned garage. Garage door replacement recouped 267.7% of its cost at resale in the 2025 national Cost vs Value report, first of 28 projects. National prices by material are on garage door installation cost.
Older LA homes: what an installer may find
Los Angeles housing has a median build year of 1965 in the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey, and 19.7% of homes were built in 1939 or earlier, the city's 2021 profile says. Older garages can mean a nonstandard opening or an opener with no outlet nearby; HomeAdvisor lists a new outlet at $50 to $150 and a new circuit at $1,000 to $2,500 nationally. Ask the installer to look before quoting.
