How much does slate roof repair cost

National figures. HomeGuide's slate page carries a 2026 title over a page first dated 2023.

The per-slate figure is the one to compare quotes against: $50 to $200 a slate in Angi's data, up to $300 in HomeGuide's. A handful of broken slates is a small job. Flashing is a bigger one; Fixr says flashing repair runs closer to $500 on slate against about $200 on asphalt, and HomeGuide puts flashing and fastener work at $400 to $3,000.

Do this now: a slate or shake roof leak before the roofer arrives

Stay off the roof, protect what is below, and get a roofer to cover the opening if more rain is coming; Angi puts a professional emergency tarp at about $450 in 2026.

1. Fire, smoke or sparks: get everyone out and call 911. Water near outlets, wiring or light fixtures: Angi calls that a safety hazard; turn off power to that area at the breaker only if you can reach the panel from a dry spot, then call a roofer and an electrician.
2. Catch the water. Move furniture and electronics, set out buckets and towels, and keep people out from under a ceiling that sags.
3. Stay off the slate. OSHA warns that roof surfaces can be steep and slippery and says a damp roof or tarp should dry before anyone walks on it; ice makes it worse. Put up a tarp only from the ground, or have a roofer do it. Never climb onto a wet or icy roof.
4. Photograph it. Angi says to document the damage and keep every invoice. Take outside photos from the ground.
5. Leave broken slates where they fall and keep any pieces; they help a roofer match the slate.
6. Call the roof line with the roof material, its rough age and where the water shows up inside.

Is it urgent? When a slate or shake roof leak needs a roofer today

It is urgent when water is reaching the attic or the rooms below, a ceiling stain keeps growing, or a storm or tree opened the roof; Angi says same-day or emergency service adds $100 to $300 or more to the repair.

• Water in the attic or the house, or larger brown spots spreading on the ceiling.
• Daylight through the roof boards in an unfinished attic.
• Tree damage, even if it looks minor, or fire damage.
• Large puddles on the roof, or a leak near electrical wiring.

It can usually wait for a regular weekday visit when the problem is moss or algae, light hail marks or minor flashing damage that is not leaking, Angi says. Booking ahead skips the emergency fee, and Angi says fall or slow-season bookings can save 10% to 15%.

Slate roof repair or replace

Slate outlasts nearly every other roof. Angi gives it 60 to 150 years. HomeGuide splits it by stone: soft slate 50 to 125 years, hard slate 75 to 200 years or more. Because the stone lasts that long, most slate problems are local: broken slates, worn flashing at chimneys and valleys, and failed fasteners. Repair is usually the answer while most slates are still sound.

Reslating, where the roof is stripped, the underlayment replaced and sound slates relaid with new ones mixed in, runs $10 to $30 per square foot in HomeGuide's figures. A new slate roof runs $15 to $30 per square foot in HomeAdvisor's replacement data. A new roof over slate is a code question: the 2018 International Residential Code, as reproduced in a re-roofing guide, does not allow a recover over slate, and local adoption varies, so check with your building department. • Lean toward repair when breaks are scattered, most slates are still hard and whole, and leaks trace to flashing.
• Lean toward reslating when slates are flaking or soft across large areas, many are slipping because fasteners have failed, or leaks show up in several places at once.

Slate roof repair near me: finding a specialist roofer

Slate is specialist work, and many shingle roofers do not take it. Ask these before you book:

• How many slate roofs have you repaired in the past year, and can I see photos?
• Can you match the slate's color, size and thickness, and where will you get it?
• How will you reach the work without walking on the slate, and who pays for slates broken during the job?
• Does the estimate list the number of slates, the flashing to be replaced, and the fasteners you will use?

A quote that patches slates with roofing tar instead of replacing them, or that pushes a full tear-off of a roof with mostly sound slate, is a reason to get a second opinion. Do not go up on a slate roof yourself; it is slick and the slates break underfoot. Cedar shake roof repair cost

Cedar shake repair and replacement, national figures. We found no reputable guide that publishes a per-shake price.

Angi and This Old House both put the average cedar shake repair at about $750, and Fixr's range for wood shakes is $350 to $1,500. Common repairs are split or cupped shakes, moss and debris holding water, and worn flashing. Angi says a cedar roof can last up to 60 years when it is installed and maintained properly, while HomeGuide gives wood shake 25 to 30 years. Treat the lower figure as the planning number in hot, wet or shaded spots.

Do not coat a cedar roof. HomeGuide says wood shingles should not be coated; see the roof coating guide for the roofs coating does suit. When a shake roof is near the end of its life with splits and leaks across many areas, compare the repair quote to a new roof at $6 to $15 per square foot (Angi).
