Do this now: the first 48 hours after a fire in Los Angeles
- Fire still burning or smoke coming back? Get everyone out and call 911.
- Stay out until fire officials say it is safe. The Red Cross says not to cross colored tape on doors or windows.
- Check outside for downed lines and gas damage. In SCE territory, call 911 first for a downed line, then SCE at 1-800-611-1911; LADWP customers call 1-800-DIAL-DWP. Smell gas or hear hissing? Leave and call from a safe distance.
- Photograph everything before cleanup. The Red Cross says not to throw damaged items away until an inventory is taken.
- Call your insurer as soon as you can, FEMA says, and ask on the first call about securing the house and living expenses. Save every receipt.
- Never sign an assignment of benefits or any contract that hands your claim to a contractor.
Fire damage restoration in Los Angeles is securing, cleaning, deodorizing and rebuilding a home after fire, smoke and firefighting water. HomeAdvisor's 2026 national range is $3,083 to $52,031, with an average of $27,477.
Is it an emergency? What cannot wait after an LA fire
After the fire department releases the house, three things are urgent: securing it, drying it and calling your insurer. Broken windows and roof openings let weather in, and the Red Cross says your insurer can help secure the property. Firefighting water soaks walls and floors, and HomeAdvisor says drying them and running dehumidifiers is what prevents mold; HomeGuide says to call a restoration company within 48 hours. Water-only damage is covered on water damage restoration in Los Angeles.
How to get an LAFD fire report
The Los Angeles Fire Department sells fire incident reports for $5.50 each. Request one online through the LAFD Fire Records Request Portal at fims.lafd.org, or mail the request with the fee to LAFD Records Unit, 201 North Figueroa Street, Suite 1250, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Questions go to (213) 202-9880 or [email protected]. Medical and EMS records are not included; they have a separate records page.
Have the address and date of the fire ready. Ask your insurer whether it needs the report and keep a copy with your photos and inventory.
Wildfire zones and rebuilding rules in Los Angeles
The January 2025 fires show the scale of LA's wildfire risk: CAL FIRE says the Palisades Fire burned 23,448 acres and destroyed 6,845 structures, and the Eaton Fire burned 14,021 acres and destroyed 9,419, both starting January 7 and contained January 31, 2025. During the same windstorm about 92,000 LADWP and 314,000 SCE customers lost power at one point, Renewable Energy World reported.
Where you are on the State Fire Marshal's map changes the rebuild. OSFM's Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps classify areas as Moderate, High or Very High, and new Local Responsibility Area maps were released in four phases from February 10 to March 24, 2025. In the City of LA, LADBS requires Class A roof covering in the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone; see roof repair in Los Angeles for the reroof rules.
Rebuilding after the January 2025 fires: LADWP HOME LA Express
Owners rebuilding after the January 2025 wildfires can get larger LADWP rebates through HOME LA Express, LADWP's October 2025 program sheet says: $1,000 to $1,250 per ton for a ducted heat pump HVAC system, $1,500 to $2,500 per ton for ductless, and $1,500 to $2,500 for a heat pump water heater. Insurance and contracts after an LA fire
Photograph first, call your insurer, and read before you sign. Get the scope and price in writing, and never sign an assignment of benefits or any contract that hands your claim to the contractor. Rebuilding work of $1,000 or more needs a CSLB license, and CSLB takes complaints against licensed and unlicensed contractors for up to four years from the act. Smoke odor without much fire damage is covered on smoke damage restoration.

- How will you dry the house and test for remaining smoke odor?
