Solar Panel Inspection Cost: $150 to $350 + What It Covers
A solar panel inspection costs $150 to $350 in 2025 to 2026 published ranges, with takeover inspections from service companies at $299 to $500 and SolarEdge's remote health check at $99.
It covers per-panel output, the inverter, roof penetrations, wiring and monitoring, and ends with a written report. It is the first step after an installer closes or before buying a house with solar.

A solar panel inspection is a professional check of a home solar system's electrical connections, mounting, roof penetrations, inverter and per-panel output, costing $150 to $350 in published ranges, and it is the first step for anyone whose installer has closed, who is buying a house with solar, or whose production has dropped.
If you lease your system or have a power purchase agreement, the financing company owns it and is responsible for this work; call the servicer on your statement (SunStrong for Sunnova and legacy SunPower, Renewbrook for most PosiGen leases). The rest of this page is for owners of cash and loan systems. The owned vs leased guide explains the difference.

How much does a solar panel inspection cost
A basic inspection is $150 to $300 (Fixr) or $150 to $350 (Angi, July 2026). Service companies price a takeover inspection higher and credit it against repairs: EnergyAid starts at $299 for former Titan customers, Forme Solar charges $350 to $500 in Southern California. SolarEdge sells a $99 remote System Health Check that reports component status and warranty coverage without a visit. A pre-closing inspection when buying a house with solar is $150 to $500 (EnergySage, June 2026).

What a solar inspection includes
- Per-panel or per-string production readings compared with the system's rated output and the monitoring history.
- Inverter status, error log, firmware and the condition of the DC and AC disconnects.
- Roof penetrations: flashing, sealant and any sign of water entry, inside the attic where accessible.
- Racking torque and grounding continuity.
- Wiring and connectors for UV damage, rodent damage and overheating, including the junction boxes behind panels.
- Monitoring gateway connection and account ownership.
- A written report with photos, which is the document a buyer, insurer or lender asks for.
Solar inspection when buying a house with solar panels
Order it before the inspection contingency ends, alongside the home inspection. The report answers the four questions that matter: does the system produce what the listing claims, is the roof under it sound, is the equipment under warranty and registered, and is the system owned or leased. A general home inspector does not climb onto arrays or read inverters; a solar contractor does. The buying guide covers the paperwork side.
Solar inspection after the installer goes out of business
The inspection is how an orphaned system gets a new baseline. It documents the state of the system on a known date, transfers the monitoring account, registers the equipment with the manufacturers if the installer never did, and produces the list of what needs fixing and what is covered. For Freedom Forever, Titan and other closures, it is also the evidence behind a proof of claim or a request to a lender. If your installer is gone, check the bankruptcy tracker for who holds your account, then come back here for the repair.
Drone and thermal inspections
Thermal imaging finds hot spots (failing cells, bad connections) that a visual check misses, and drones make it practical on steep or tile roofs. Angi puts a drone-assisted thermal inspection at $100 to $300 (March 2026), though that figure is for homes generally rather than solar specifically. For a residential array a conventional per-panel reading from the monitoring data is usually enough; thermal is worth it when production has dropped and the app shows nothing obvious.
An inspection that finds nests under the array leads to a critter guard; one that finds an electrical fault leads to a licensed electrician, and the technician or electrician guide explains which trade does what.

Questions people ask
How much does a solar panel inspection cost?
$150 to $350 in published ranges (Fixr, Angi 2026). Service-company takeover inspections run $299 to $500 and are usually credited against repairs. SolarEdge's remote System Health Check is $99.
Do I need a solar inspection when buying a house?
Yes. A general home inspector does not test arrays or inverters. A solar contractor's inspection ($150 to $500) confirms production, roof condition, warranty registration and whether the system is owned or leased.
How often should solar panels be inspected?
Once a year by a professional, plus your own monthly check of production in the app and a visual check from the ground twice a year.
What does a solar inspector check?
Per-panel output, inverter status and error log, roof penetrations and flashing, racking torque and grounding, wiring and connectors, and the monitoring gateway, with a photo report.
Can I inspect my own solar panels?
From the ground and in the app, yes: production trends, debris, nests, inverter lights. Anything on the roof or inside the inverter needs a licensed professional.
What does a solar panel inspection service include?
Per-panel output readings, the inverter and error log, roof penetrations, racking and grounding, wiring and connectors, the monitoring connection, and a written report with photos.
