Do this now: before the emergency plumber arrives

  1. Gas smell: get out, then call 911 from outside.
  2. Turn off the main water valve, or the shutoff on the leaking fixture, Angi advises.
  3. Keep away from water near outlets, and shut power off at the breaker only if you can reach it from a dry spot.
  4. Sewage coming up a drain: stop using every sink, tub and toilet in the house until the line is cleared.
  5. If a pipe froze, the Red Cross says to keep the faucet open and warm the pipe with a hair dryer or heating pad, never an open flame.
  6. Photograph the damage and the meter reading. You will want both for your insurer and for DEP.
Definition

An emergency plumber in NYC is a plumbing company that takes calls outside business hours for bursts, backups and gas leaks; Angi's 2026 New York data puts the average visit at $191 and rates at $150 to $450 an hour.

Is it an emergency? What cannot wait until morning

Five problems justify a night call in New York City: a burst or spraying pipe, sewage backing up, a gas smell, water reaching wiring, and no water at all in a freeze. HomeGuide's emergency list adds a water heater flooding the floor and a single toilet that is fully clogged. Central Park averages 67.3 nights a year at or below 32 F, NOAA's normals show, and the record low is -15 F, set Feb 9, 1934, the National Weather Service lists. A dripping faucet or a slow drain can wait for regular hours.

24 hour plumber NYC: what nights, weekends and holidays cost

A 24 hour plumber in NYC bills $150 to $375 an hour in the evening, $175 to $450 on weekends and $250 to $500 or more on holidays, Angi's August 2026 New York guide shows. Angi says emergency plumbers charge about 1.5 to 3 times the standard rate. Ask the minimum service fee when you call; Angi lists $150 to $300, which often covers the first hour. Companies that take emergency calls set their own hours, and those hours vary.

DOB permits for emergency work in New York City

Emergency plumbing in NYC can start before the paperwork: a Licensed Master Plumber may file an Emergency Work Notification and begin work, then file the Limited Alteration Application through DOB NOW: Build, DOB says. Only a Licensed Master Plumber can obtain a plumbing permit. Angi says a permit for emergency work can add $150 to $900 depending on scope. Look up the plumber on DOB's Find Licensed Professionals page before you pay.

A break under the sidewalk: who pays in NYC

The owner pays for a break anywhere on the water or sewer service line between the house and the city main, because DEP makes owners responsible for all plumbing inside and outside the property. If you already carry a DEP-partner protection plan from American Water Resources ($84.84 a year for water, $143.04 for sewer), call that plan before booking anyone, since its covered repairs carry no service fee or deductible. Costs for the line itself are on sewer line repair.

After the emergency: getting part of the water bill back

Keep the plumber's invoice. DEP's Leak Forgiveness Program credits half of a bill a leak pushed to at least 200% of normal, as long as the leak is fixed and you apply within 120 days; proof of repair from a licensed plumber extends that by up to 180 days. The credit is limited to once in two years.

Call your insurer as well as a restoration company, photograph the damage before anything is moved, and never sign an assignment of benefits or any contract that hands your insurance claim to a contractor. If water has soaked floors or walls, see water damage restoration in NYC.
